Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

"I have not," Sheik confirms, "The only shadows I have encountered were barely aware."

Well, to be honest, it had been Link who had encountered it, but he had told them about it afterwards, in Kakariko.

Shadow Link nodded. "I thought so. You would have been more decisive in your response if you were."

"Quite possibly," he says, smiling faintly. "Still - I am to assume from our affinity with the shadows that we are akin in some way."

Shadow Link chuckled. "You aren't assuming we're akin all that much, if you really do at all. You're too uncertain on what I think."

"Better to be uncertain than leap to conclusions," he shrugs. "In that case, enlighten me. What do you think?"

"Paranoid," Shadow Link said with a shrug. "Not that it's bad, but you lack the ability to look confident," he started, moving closer, smirking up at Sheik. He was definitely shorter. Not quite child, but not much better than that height wise. "You don't have an real clue what I think of the Royal Family, so you won't hint if you're for or against them. To avoid conflict if for some reason I was violent about my beliefs regarding them."

He laughed. "Of course, that's a rather pointless fear."

Sheik's eyebrows raise. It's more to the point that if he tells others that the Sheikah are the servants of the Royal Family, he could potentially be putting Zelda in danger - but that's a good point, too.

"Paranoia has been known to save my life," he tells the boy shortly - "It's a useful personality trait when the land is made up of traitors and backstabbers."

Another inscrutible look. "And why is it pointless?"

"Like I said, it's a good trait, but if you make it obvious, then it just tells those who ARE out to hurt you can use it against you," Shadow Link said, a smirk planted firmly in place.

"Well, first and foremost, this ship? Whenever the crew starts to fight each other, barring extreme circumstances, usually those tentacles that dress you come out and pin down whoever is fighting. One on one, easy to stop them."

"And what," Sheik says slowly, "If my concern was not merely physical? Something that may seem innocuous to me may be valuable information to the right buyer. In that case, I would rather keep my mouth shut."

"Well, you'd have very little to fear as, as far as I've found? We're the only ones form Hyrule," Shadow Link said with a shrug.

He had tried not to think about it yet, but the boy's words make Sheik deflate just a little. "Oh," he says quietly, the disappointment evident in his expression.

So Link isn't here with them. Zelda gives a little sigh of frustration.

"Perhaps that will change in the future," he says half to himself, then shakes his head. "In that case, what is your name?"

"Hoping for an ally? A lot of people do," Shadow Link said, gesturing to the people around them.

"It's rude to ask for another's name without giving yours first. And considering you like to hide things, I'm not going to tell you until I get yours."

"An ally, yes," he echoes, although Link is more than just an ally to him. To them both, really.

He smirks a little at the boy's order - well, that much is accurate, at least. "Call me Sheik," he tells him - it's hardly an uncommon name - or is that title? - amongst Sheikah.

"Don't hold your hopes too high," Shadow Link said.

"Sheik, huh? Good to get a name. I'm Shadow," he started with every intention to stop there, but something...something about this person made him feel compelled to finish it in one smooth sentence, "Link."

And he froze, the expression on his face showing surprise that he HAD said it. It had been a compulsion, something inside of him saying he wanted this person to know who he was.

Have you ever seen a Sheikah do a double-take? You have now.

For a moment, he doesn't say a word - the shadow of his Link had been barely sentient, an automaton with instincts only to kill. But this boy - he's clearly different, clearly possesses his own mind.

Is he still a danger?

"Shadow Link," he repeats softly. "You are the Shadow of one named Link in your time? A Hero?"

And Shadow Link noticed that double-take and started cursing in his head. Stupid, stupid, stupid! It's not like he could even say it was a habit.

He'd been telling everyone just 'Shadow.' So why in all of Hyrule did he say his full name NOW?! What compelled him to do it for the one person he KNEW would be able to recognize the name.

But he wasn't going to appear like he was hiding the fact now. So he rolled his eyes in response to the question. "What other being named Link it gonna be strong enough to get a strong shadow?"

Honestly, he shouldn't be surprised that even by Shadow Link's time, there is still a need for heroes. Hadn't he seen Link's predecessor, all those years ago? The first wielder of the Master Sword, before it had become a legend - he had made it a legend.

"Indeed," he murmurs, "The only other shadow I have encountered was also the shadow of a Hero - you will forgive me for being wary."

Shadow Link raised an eyebrow at that and smirk. "So you're in support of the Royal Family," he finally said.

"I never said that," Sheik points out calmly, "Merely that the Hero's shadow was insane and determined to destroy anything in its path. Alignment did not concern it - it was indiscriminate in its attacks."

[You're not going to tell him?]

[Not until I determine whether or not he's a danger.]

"Did he talk to you?"

"I do not believe it knew how to."

That, and it didn't know they were there. Neither had Link.

"Then it's path would be straight for his owner," Shadow Link said. "We're naturally drawn to our owners."

"Drawn to attack your owners?" Sheik frowns, "Because that is what this one did. And I was under the impression that shadows cannot exist without something to cast them - attempting to kill your owner would be suicide."

"Well, if the shadow is resentful, yes. It wouldn't be a bloodthirsty shadow unless it was, so he had to want to attack his owner," Shadow Link said with a shrug. "And a shadow doesn't require his owner to live. We are born with our owner, but depending on the circumstance, it's quite possible to live beyond them."

"It seems rather counterproductive to me," he muses, then shrugs. "Did you resent your Link?"
