Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

"Probably for the same reason you're wearing that kilt? It's a nifty security blanket, and it really complements the outfit."

Jamie misses any inherent sarcasm in the statement and makes a few pleased-sounding noises. Apparently, he's completely ignoring the part about security blankets and is interpreting it as a compliment. "Aye, it does, doesn't it?"

He gives her a brief, but warm smile, and sticks out his hand for her to shake. "I'm Jamie. It's nice to meet ye."

"..." Buffy lets it go. He obviously didn't mean any sort of harm or insult. "Buffy. It's a pleasure. I think. Hi."

The name's a bit odd, but Jamie's heard stranger. "It's a bit disconcerting, aye? Waking up all covered in slime and having a ship talk in your head." He leaves out the "naked" part, partially because it wouldn't be gentlemanly and partially because Buffy does have a very, very sharp weapon in her hand.

"Has anyone given ye the rundown yet?"

A very sharp weapon that cuts a great many things into a great many smaller things.

You so know the Barefoot Contessa wants this thing for her kitchen.

"I've heard bits and pieces here. Giant spaceship. Chosen for a great purpose. Really bad taste in fashion. It sounds like the best cruise this side of Gilligan's Island."

His face falls a little. He had actually been looking forward to doing some of the explaining this time around. But he bounces back from it quickly.

"Gilligan's Island? I've not heard of that. Is it somewhere in the Colonies..er, I mean, the Americas?" He grimaces a little at the slip.

"..." This place was a po-po platter of different worlds, realities, and timelines wasn't it? Buffy was just starting to understand how much of one it was. "Um. No. It's...a tv show about an eclectic group of vacationers who get stuck on an island. It was like Lost, but actually bearable enough to watch."

Buffy doesn't know the half of it. "Oh! Television I know. It's that wee box with the pictures and sound, aye?" Although he has no idea what Lost is.

"They have a media library here," he says helpfully. "Ye might be able to find it there, but I haven't been yet. Or there's the Sensoriums. Although I prefer Wyn's term for them. She calls them Imaginariums."

He looks around for a minute, trying to spot her in the crowd. "She's verra helpful with explanations, if you've not met her yet."

"Cute blonde thing in a flannel shirt? I've met her. She seems nice," Buffy says, recalling the cute blonde. "Not that I wanted to watch. I was just mostly dropping a pop-culture reference coz that's...what I do." Buffy flashes back to her conversation with Superboy and, knowing that it was a slim chance of this even being true, asked, "Uh...are you a werewolf by any chance?"

"I dinna know what a pop-culture refer...wait, WHAT?" Jamie /stares/ at Buffy, utterly taken by surprise by the question. "A werewolf? Whyever would ye think I'm a werewolf? Next ye'll be thinking I'm a Yeti or a Cyberman."

"I, what, no!" Buffy exclaimed. "That's like not why I even...I mean, it was just because....you know, not important. I just thought you were someone else for a moment, but you're not, so that's all fun and kosher," Buffy apologized. "So...uh...where or when are you from?"

"Och, that's alright then." Jamie dismisses the notion of being someone else with a wave of his hand and a small smile. He's not entirely sure he has a grasp of what 'kosher' means - especially given the context of that sentence - but he'll just do what he does rather a lot and pretend that made some sort of sense.

"Well, would ye like the long version or the short version? I was born in Scotland, but I'd be surprised if you've not gotten that part. As for when...last time I was there, it was 1746. But I traveled a wee bit before I found myself on Stacy. That's the short version. The long version is a bit stranger," he adds helpfully.

"I'm totally bff with strange," Buffy says. "Except, you know, not Doctor Strange. But strange itself? Totally one of my top ten on Facebook." Blink blink. "1764?"

"Doctor Strange? Well, I know the Doctor, and some people would think he's pretty strange, but I like him just fine."

He tries - and fails - to suppress a quick grin at the reaction. "1746, not 1764. Ye may have heard of a great battle in Scotland around then? Culloden?" Honestly, he doesn't know if she would have, but it was a pretty big battle for him, so he decides to try that first before breaking out the truly weird part.

"My history goes back as far as knowing that shoulder pads were a total stylistic tragedy," Buffy says sheepishly. "I'm sorry, I'm not history girl I'm more...PE girl."

Jamie's not really surprised, and says good-naturedly, "Aye, well. I'm not good with history myself, but ye know, since I was there, I remember it a little better than some."

Okay, he's gotten that part out of the way. So, now, the weird part. He scratches the back of his head for moment, trying to figure out how to say it so it makes sense. "I met someone there that...ah. Have ye ever heard of traveling through time?"

"This demon once pretended to be a future version of one of my best friends on his wedding day and sabotaged his wedding to this ex-demon who'd ruined the supposedly time-travelling guy's life so...yes? In a very awkward, roundabout fashion?"

"Ah." It takes Jamie a minute or so to work through that. "Well, I can tell you from experience that it's possible. And last I checked, I'm no demon."

Sometimes it still takes Buffy a minute or two to work through that. Yeah, she's been doing this for seven years, but life seems to love throwing her curveballs.

Like this whole intergalactic ship thing.

"I kinda figured you weren't," Buffy said. "Well, okay, no. I mean, you've lived awhile, but the time travelling explains it all."

"Are ye saying I look old?" He doesn't, really - early twenties, at best. He frowns for a moment, then realizes she meant something different. "Oh, because of being from your past. I try not to think about it too much." It tends to give him a headache.

There was another point he was actually going to make, though. "I wouldn't normally just come out and say it - it's not something that most people I met would understand, aye? But...it's different here. Ye saw all the pods. The people that are out all seem to have some quality Stacy thinks is important. And there's something..."

He breaks off and shakes his head. "I don't know. Maybe it's just being on the ship. But I've got a bad feeling." He shrugs. "I dinna know how to else to describe it, and I don't think I'm doing it well."

Buffy frowned at his words. "Hey, I'm talking to people about being a Vampire Slayer and how I fight demons for a living. Well, okay, not for a living coz there's no paycheck? But to keep the world safe. And usually, that's only something that a very small group of people from back home know. I'm totally with the understanding that. You, what, have a bad feeling about being here? Or about what's to come?"

Jamie blinks rather a lot. He hadn't heard the part about being a Vampire Slayer before. He opens his mouth and closes it, then holds up a finger before recovering his wits enough to continue.

"I don't know, and that's what's bothering me." He gives her a frank look. "I don't know what a Vampire Slayer is, but I could tell ye could fight." He gives the scythe a rather pointed look. "And if something bad does happen, I think the crew's going to have to work together. Which means we have to trust each other, aye?"

He looks down for a moment, and adds, a bit quieter, "Besides, ye seem nice, even if ye talk a little funny."

Buffy chuckled. "I talk a lot funny, I know. I guess it comes with the territory of being named Buffy," she grinned. "I...fight supernatural creatures. Demons and stuff. Keep the world safe. And you're right. We do need to have that trust factor and be a team and...it's good that I just had to do a huge team effort thing, coz it's good training for something that's this massive in it's everything." She pauses, thinking for a moment, before adding, "You seem like a nice guy too."

In the right light, Jamie may - just may - be looking a little pink around the edges. "Thank ye." He clears his throat abruptly, and decides that perhaps talking about fighting is a much better idea, all things considered. "Supernatural creatures, like demons, and...I'm guessing vampires, from what ye named yourself as?"

Ah! Yes! Fighty-talk! Fighty-talk good! "Vampires mostly. 'Cause they tend to be, like, everywhere. They're the ants of the demon world," she explained. "But other things. Demons. Ghosts. There was this time where there was a robot. And this time where a demon made its way into the computer and then came out as a robot. Or something. I'm not really mechanical girl."
