What a convenient time for Zuko to notice the grouping of many people he knows!
It surprises him that Mai is talking to them civilly. He knows she fought with them on more than one occasion. Maybe she needs backup . . .? But no, no violence appears to be happening. Angry words, it seems, are not even being exchanged. How weird.
This throws a bit of a wrench in his plans to prostrate himself before the Avatar and Crew when he met them again and put himself at the mercy of their honor. That would just be overdramatic right now, so the Prince of the Fire Nation stands around looking like a doof for a moment as he wonders what to say to get their attention (and figure out how to apologize in THIS setting.)
"Uh . . . maybe, 'Hello -' Yeah, 'Hello' is good -"
