Meet N' Greet

||Initiating Meet and Greet. Crew members, for the sake of morale, there will be periodic meetings on the Obs Deck so that newer members of the crew can be welcomed and so the crew can communicate with one another.||

Apparently, Stacy liked to throw a party now and again.

Although he could easily get a glimpse of that leg, Saitō was polite enough not to stare (or perhaps after this week, he was just out of stares and willing to take almost anything at face value).

"Saitō Hajime." His politeness, though, could only really extend to the social graces he actually knew, and so he bowed as he gave his name...and then just looked at Hiccup's extended hand, a bit perplexed. What...was he supposed to do with that, exactly?

"It's called a handshake," Hiccup said with a grin. "There's a lot of ways people greet other people because of all the different cultures. This is a common one, although a lot of people do the bowing thing like you just did, too. That's what they do in my friend Zuko's world."

He moved his hand closer to let Saitō give it a try.

He reached forward to take Hiccup's hand, a bit awkwardly, and then...right, if it was called a "handshake," then there had to be some actual shaking involved. Probably. Hopefully.

"Like this?"

Hiccup gave his hand a few good shakes to show him how it was done. His hands were coarse and had some small scars and burns that definitely backed up his claim of being a blacksmith.

"You got it."

That wasn't lost on Saitō - and while he had no experience in smithing swords himself, the calluses on his own hands were an indicator that he certainly knew how to use the ones at his hip. "In an environment like this, I assume you've had to get used to being flexible?"

The question was mostly aimed at smithing. He wasn't sure how much experience anyone on the ship had with katanas in particular, especially considering that he seemed to be one of the only Japanese aboard, but it didn't mean he wasn't going to need one of them fixed or remade someday.

"Flexibility's pretty much a survival trait, so yes," Hiccup said, his voice just slightly deadpan.

It was an obvious question, admittedly, but it was an obvious question with a destination in mind. Saitō took the katana from his side and held it perpendicular between them, carefully unsheathing it.

"Have you dealt with anything like this before?"

"Giant sky dragons that carry people inside their bellies and the world ending?"

Hiccup pretended to consider that for a moment, like he was mining his memory for past experiences that were similar.

"Not so much, no. Hadn't really dealt with Ragnorak before all this."

For a moment, the look on Saitō's face was probably very stupid, but he was back to professional blankness in no time.

"Sorry; I failed to ask clearly. As a blacksmith -" He tilted the sword in his hands for Hiccup's inspection. "Is this something you would be able to repair, should it become necessary?"

It was in good enough condition for now; he'd made a point of checking it over as soon as he retrieved it from storage. But - "The western nations of my homeworld use a completely different style of swords than we do in Japan...so I don't know how much familiarity anyone here is likely to have with this."
