Fair enough. Morgan understood exactly how that worked. "Have you had a chance to experiment with the Sensoriums yet? I'd recommend them for serious training and practice." He had a feeling that would be important.

"I have, though I haven't used them extensively yet." And despite his usual stoicism, he couldn't quite keep just a hint of amazement out of his tone. There was quite a bit on this ship that he'd found hard to believe, but the Sensoriums easily topped the list.

"We have a lot of other crew members who are trained in melee combat as well," he said, with a bit of a lopsided smile that said he obviously meant himself. "Unfortunately, our training organization itself is on hiatus at the moment due to recent events, but I don't think you'll have any trouble finding someone willing and eager to help despite that."

[iaijutsu]

"I'm glad to see that melee combat has a place here." After losing a massive battle to a numerically inferior force because of overwhelming modern firepower, seeing how much further advanced the technology here was hadn't exactly been comforting.

[morganknight]

"I won't pretend it's always the easiest thing to work into a large-scale all-range engagement," he admitted. "But those aren't the only kind we face. A lot of what we have to deal with is against similarly armed opponents, particularly ones that can evade or shut down projectile attacks, or in situations which make projectile weapons prohibitive."

[iaijutsu]

"How often do we see action? Is it fairly consistent?" He'd seen enough mentions of missions and battles, but there hadn't been much indication of their frequency - and as unusual as the past week had been, the very idea of a full week of walking around without facing any serious threats to his life had been possibly one of the strangest parts to get used to.

[morganknight]

"Not at all consistent, I'm afraid, but it seems to be reasonably frequent. It's feast or famine. Right now I believe we may be entering a slower period, since we just basically overthrew the ship's masters and took over it ourselves, but I have no doubt that they won't take it sitting down."

[iaijutsu]

"I've heard that mentioned, though not in terribly great detail." More like 'there was a rebellion, and it happened, and we won,' which...left plenty of things to be curious about. "Could you tell me more about that?"

[morganknight]

"I'm not the most politically active, so take my story as you will," Morgan said as he gathered his thoughts. Where to start...

"This ship, along with others like it, was created by the Daligig, who are the worst enemies of the Ohm, as I understand it. The purpose was to do just what it's doing -- save people to form a crew. We're the second crew; the first, the Daligig killed off because they wouldn't obey. The reason for that is... probably the same one we have; the Daligig essentially chose to treat us like tools, without any regard for our basic existence. Sit down, shut up, do as you're told, no matter how horrible that actually is."

[iaijutsu]

Saitō didn't blink. "And how horrible did that get?"

[morganknight]

"Atrocities of war. I suppose death was the worst of it, though I've heard enough stories of some of the missions that people went on to wonder... I think the worst one I've heard of was when several of our crew were essentially branded as lesser creatures just for the crime of existing."

He suspected that explaining cloning might sidetrack the discussion too far for an easy recovery.

[iaijutsu]

"Death is unavoidable in war." And Saitō had done a few things that might qualify as atrocities himself, by how the Chōshū liked to describe the Shinsengumi's actions. "But there is no honor forcing a fight upon those who are not prepared to die."
