Technical fun (open)

It was surprisingly easy for Mei Ling to find areas where she felt comfortable on this Good Ship Stacy. A little reluctant to explore the ship at first, Mei Ling was very glad that she did after discovering the Special Weapons Division of the ship.

She's currently seated at one of the tables in the laboratory. She has a set of tools lined up next to her and her communication ring in front of her. She had created a similar device, the Codec. She was fascinated by different aspects of the devices and was excited to find out how this ring operates.

She was so focused on her work she wouldn't notice anyone else entering the lab.

It's another long day for Billy. After another dose of slop and water-shot, he treks back to the laboratory to check the progress of some of their projects. At first, he doesn't see anything amiss. The same half-finished tools and weapons are scattered around, the same eerie silence hangs over the place, and the same overload of work still needs to be done.

It takes Billy a moment to realize that a young woman he doesn't recognize is working at one of the tables. She seems absorbed in studying the function of the comm ring---and he feels a small swell of pride for what is partially his design. He understood the annoyances of being interrupted at work, but at the same time he had an obligation to touch base with the new engineer. Carefully maneuvering himself to the other side of the table in front of her when she puts a tool down, he speaks.

"Excuse me, ma'am, but I don't believe I've encountered you in the laboratory before?" He hastily adds to that, "I apologize for interrupting your study."

"Welcome to our laboratory, Mei Ling. I'm Billy Cranston, and I head the Engineering department with Allen Gentry. My specialties are communications technology and weapons development." Smiling, he nods to her and inspects the partially assembled comm ring, adjusting his glasses out of habit.

"Judging by your work, I'd hypothesize that you work with communications technology as well. Did you build items like this?" Billy plucks his own comm ring from his hand and holds it to the light, lost in thought for a moment.

Mei Ling doesn't need to worry. He's definitely impressed. "Wow. Given the tendency of the military to set the standards for technology advancements, I have no doubt that you are highly skilled as an engineer."

He smiles once at her before dropping his gaze to his hands. Specifically to his wrist, at the empty spot where one of his old devices used to rest. "My own inventions were considerably less...professionally utilized. I developed technology for a group of teen superheroes mentored by a wizard in a time warp. As bizarre as that sounds, it's true."

Billy cracks a nervous smile, then gets back to the subject. "We'll definitely need more people with those skills, particularly radar technology. If you're willing, there's most certainly a place for you on our team."

Billy appreciates not being questioned about his past. Much as he longs for familiar faces and places, there's a task in front of them.

"In that case, welcome aboard." He returns her smile, then contemplates her next words. "That's a Chinese proverb, right? It's a good message, but I take it in moderation. If the cooks fail to communicate while completing their task, the rice may turn into an inedible mess."

Billy's gaze drops to the ring. "How do our rings compare to your equipment?"

Yeah. Snake doesn't know that many people on the ship, so at first it's as if he's stalking Mei Ling. Which... could be possible too, she is hot. Because he appears in the lab and looks completely out of place.

He then did something he often did when he was around Otacon. He came up behind her and leaned over to see what she was working on, "Find something?" To those unused to Snake, they would likely startle at such an action.

Snake has hung around Otacon enough to not be too wary of labs. He also learned to never ask what something is unless you really, really, really want to know.

"Strange ship," He glances to one of the said rings, he picks up a loose one to look it over, "Have to find out if they're better than your codec, huh?"

Daniel had taken to wandering the ship as he daily routine. He would sometimes pause to make notes in a notebook or his tape recorder. Though he favored his note book more these days... it didn't have batteries.

He smiles faintly when he sees Mei Ling. Something about her posture reminds him of Sam. He steps a little further into the lab, "Um... Hello." he gives a little wave, "I'm Daniel Jackson, I don't think we've met."

"Nice meet you, Mei," Daniel returns the smile. Dispite being near strangers, he seems very relaxed about it. He looks at what she was doing then to her, "You're a engineer...? Well, um... I mean, of--of course you are..." he gestured to what she was working on. He mentally kicks himself for putting his foot in his mouth.

"So, uh... what are you working on?"

Spot had wandered across most every square inch of authorized access on Stacy, but she continued to come back to the engineering sections. It was one of the few places that reminded her of home and gave the cat a place to truly feel safe. When she saw someone unfamiliar in the room, however, she let out a small whining meow, and rubbed against the stranger's leg. The way the cat saw it, either the act would net some attention (maybe even petting) , or shed be ignored. If the tall person tried kicking her, well, Spot had ways to discourage that.
