The first day had cut the participants by half, though to the meatship's undoubtedly great relief, most of that half had not been culled from their own ranks. Technology and magic together had been combined to heal the wounds of those who had suffered in their first rounds, and those who wished to make the attempt could play with their new powers or toys, to see how much they could adapt to their uses before the next day.

The cameras never stopped following them, never stopped rolling. (Except for the bathroom, but otherwise, don't strut around your bedroom naked.)

The next day dawned bright and clear, bright and clear being the prevailing, enforced weather pattern of the castle's particular biome chunk.

At Cole's request, his opponent, Grand Alchemist Masushiro, had come by the meatship's lounge to speak with him further. Not long after breakfast, a man in a voluminous hooded coat, a mask over his face and gloves on his hands, stepped through the door cautiously.

Cole knew that they needed to talk after that fight.

It was one thing for a tournament to be hosted for fun, and he felt it would be just that at first, but if so many worlds were involved in fighting the Ohm, why focus on taking from potential allies?

"You have any trouble?"

"Not in the least," the Alchemist said as he stepped in. "They care very little if we associate behind the scenes."

Day 2 Matches

Maxim vs. King Bradley

The Extremely Dangerous Arena featured all sorts of excessive mayhem. Flamethrowers! Electrified wires! Sawblades! Hammers and axes that descended at random! It's like being in a robot fighting arena, except... not with robots.

It was making Maxim kind of homesick. Mechanicsburg was just like this in spots. Especially in Castle Heterodyne...

This time, he wasn't taking any chances. He'd basically stripped down to just the plantsuit, and left his hat back in the room. It was safer there, anyway.

The new magic he'd picked up from Saurfang made his mind itch. Vaguely, Maxim wondered if that was what it was like to be a Spark. He made a note to ask Kyladriss if it bothered her like that. In any case, it was time to get down to business. Violet eyes narrowed as he scanned the arena, looking for his newest opponent.

Lash vs. Four-Glass-Walls

The Parking Garage was five stories high and looked like a bomb had hit it. Holes riddled the floors, power lines lay sparking and sprinkler systems poured water. The elevators were out, but the stairs remained -- or just vaulting up the rubble to the next floor up.

Kyladriss vs. Recca Hanabishi

The Circus Tent Arena was exactly what it sounded like -- a massive three-ring circus. No living creatures, but all the props and settings, as if a show would happen this very night.

Ian vs Bight/Crucible

In the Moonlight Arena, the two competitors faced off on a transparent glass platform elevated high above the ground, under a full moon and a clear sky. Only glimpses of refracted light showed the outlines of their arena, and while the tournament had no "ring out" rules, the impact from a fall from this height would undoubtedly spell a loss for the poor soul who endured it.

Another situation where Ian was hoping to throw his opponent over the edge. But he'd done it in the first so maybe he'd be able to do it on this one too. He'd also been practising sharpening his hair. As long as he could do it quickly, he'd have a good needle to stab his opponent with and at least injure him or get him off guard.

Ian stood ready, not fazed by the glass platform showing him how high up they were.

Naoto vs. Jack Rakan

The Gratuitous Cliffside Arena was exactly what it sounded like, with the added benefit of a rushing river that poured off the edge of it to create a massive waterfall.

Simon vs. Mark

The Storm Plains were almost enough to make a person worship the sky as a god. Over the flat plains stretched black clouds, horizon to horizon, their depths swirling with lightning as thunder rumbled down around the combatants.

Cole vs Rhoubhe Manslayer

The arena was the Graveyard at Midnight. They would not fight entirely blind -- torches provided sparse light to the ominous rows of crumbled and overgrown tombstones. But the clouds overhead let no light from moon or stars in, and the stench of decay surrounded them.

Oddly enough, this environment was something he was used to. Hell, he almost felt like he was back in New Marais.

Of course reality clicked in quickly enough. Cole needed to chat with his opponent as soon as he could. If he needed help with the Ohm, Cole would be willing to help.

Takamichi Takahata vs. Erhart

These two competitors will fight in the Grand Forest, an ancient(-seeming) woods with mighty trees, little undergrowth, and maybe even some dangerous wild animals to add spice.

Erhart pauses a moment, seeming to take the entire forest in. He has his sword drawn, and slung over one shoulder. He seems.... a peace. This reminds him of his home, on a feudal world, the memories faded but still extant, abraded by his hypno-indoctrination into the brotherhood of the Sons of Dorn, but still there.

For a raging avatar of war, there is a long and peculiar sense of peace about him, at this time.

Ruffnut vs. Billy

Their battlefield is the Extremely Rich Guy's Mansion. Four floors and seven wings of valuable objects that will almost undoubtedly get destroyed for the audience's groaning sympathy!

Ruffnut hadn't actually waited for the match to start to enjoy smashing some priceless nicknacks. Her first victim being a shiny vase on a pedestal. Her crooked smile betrayed a wicked satisfaction at the sharp sound of destruction.

Saicho vs. Beastboy

The Desert of Death was pretty much exactly what it sounded like: one massive stretch of sandy, rippling dunes, beneath a sun that beat down like a hammer on an anvil.

And Beastboy, with his love of references and callbacks had transformed into a Road Runner before taking off sprinting along the sand building up speed. He had read they could travel at speeds of up to twenty miles an hour and he wanted to see if he could pull that off before the fight began.

Hana vs. Lina

These two would fight Atop a Moving Train, with twenty cars of maneuverability in total. Should one of them fall off and be unable to catch up with the train to continue the fight, it would be their loss.

Okay, after dealing with the bridge, winding up on yet another precarious narrow place has stirred up Lina's temper already. "A train?! Come on!"

However, this one at least has cover. Sort of. More cover than the bridge did, at least. Hopefully she won't be spending too much time flying this time.

Kai vs. Dr. McNinja

Swamp Country was just as it sounded: a waterlogged bog full of plants and the decaying remains of plants, through which the two combatants had to slog to battle. Pleasant, huh?

Hit Girl vs. Chance

hough their arena was the City Quarter, they needn't worry about spectators. The city in question was constructed solely for this battle; it had no inhabitants and no one's livelihood or property would be damaged in the violence.
