Billy would've yelped and toppled over some time ago. Fortunately, he's had some practice with balance now. He manages to stay standing as long as Kaya keeps her balance, though he does roll his eyes.

"No. I've been talking with Ronnae, and she suggested I push myself," he said simply. "I know why you're here, of course."

Kaya could, of course, keep her balance on a fork at this point, and once she saw Billy holding her she lept off, beaming at him.

"I see that someone has definitely improved their balance!" She said. "I came because I wanted to see how far I could go, doing something like this. So are you actually going to cheer Ronnae on here?"

Billy playfully swatted at her shoulder once she was close enough. He loved her, but teasing was serious business!

"Yes, of course. What kind of inattentive mate do you think I am? I'm also here to fight."

Kaya chuckled, thinking Billy was joking, but that faded away quickly when she saw that he wasn't.

"Billy, are you sure? These people aren't playing around! They know magic, they're strong! I don't want you to get hurt!"

"I know that," Billy answered, gritting his teeth. "I know I'll never be a match for you, Ronnae, or most of us. That doesn't mean I can just sit and complain about it, though. The war demands warriors who can make it."

In other words, it was extreme training. "It sounds as if death is unlikely for the losers."

He wasn't entirely sure, but the schoolyard taunts still lingered in the back of his mind. Chicken. Wuss.

"I know that, its just... Kaya trailed off. She knew she had no right to tell Billy what to do- that was Ronnae's, and she was okay with this. What right did she have to try and dissuade him.

"I would never call you a weakling Billy, not ever. All the same, you know where your talents lie, and they are in as much as anyone else's. If something bad were to happen here, I just hope you wouldn't somehow be permanently damaged. We have no idea-"

And then she laughed. "You know, I'm just as much as in danger, really. So really? I just hope we don't have to fight each other."

"I know," Billy winced. "But...I can't keep running from fights. I want to learn, and one of the best ways is by fighting new opponents"

He did see her points, though. "Would it help if we questioned her about the likelihood of death and permanent injury?"

"But you aren't running FROM the fights, you're running TO them," Kaya insisted, "and that's very different. Yes, you have a point, but doing this you have no idea what kind of opponent you start out with!"

Yes, that did matter to her Billy.

"Please do. I know I have no right to fuss over you, but its important to know, you know?"

"I will. I promise."

Billy starts heading in that direction, a little put out. He knows, damnit---he just wants to push his limits. It should be safe, right?

She hopes so. The idea of Billy hurt was a bad one.

If only she knew what awaited her back on the ship.
