Law & Order: Defense's Case

Judge James T. Kirk is presiding. The Jury: Jamie Hemeros, Arha Masaari, Chris Ramirez, Malcolm Reynolds, Diana Titov, Sir Sparhawk, Fitz Kreiner, and Cameron Mitchell. Each had been informed not to discuss the trial, even amongst themselves.

The charges that have been presented to the court:

11 counts of Kidnapping
2 counts of Attempted Kidnapping
13 counts of Conspiracy to Kidnap
11 counts of Enslavement
2 counts of Attempted Enslavement
13 counts of Conspiracy to Enslave
7 counts of Attempted Murder
28 counts of Assault with Intent to Kill
35 counts of Conspiracy to Commit Murder

The Prosecution has mounted its case. Now the Defense is calling its witnesses, to try to prove the Yeerk's innocence.

The cold hardness of the court bench braced her back. Sheeana allowed herself a calculated slouch and smirked. The defense was now mustering the arguments of rationality.

Prop your bulwarks against the churning flood of mob hatred, Mr. Spock. The being you're defending is strange and terrifying. You cannot beat the ancient tribal preservation instincts the prosecution has already brought into play. Your logic will be impeccable but it will be like a tiny needle piercing a Worm. You will be crushed beneath it.

She did not envy his task, in other words.

From her very neutral position as a member of the jury who had arrived after the madness, Arha herself felt no compulsion to swing one way or another on the matter, but she listened nonetheless. Logic, which she might agree with, was supposed to override emotion and yet rarely did so. Her eyes scanned those assembled and she arched a slim brow when she caught sight of Sheeana.

The seat she was sitting in was annoying, and yet she ignored it, focusing her attention elsewhere -- to those speaking, to the room, and to the atmosphere. Sheeana's familiar profile remained sentimentally comforting, something that amused her as much as she chided herself for the slight weakness. No one else would catch it, though, no one bu Sheeana herself.

Ah, a Bene Gesserit on the jury. What a fortunate thing for us. I wonder if they have any idea of what even a reverend mother of her time can do.

Sheeana reached back to brush her wild hair behind her ears. In that motion, she hid a message with her fingers. This trial is nothing but Bread and Circuses.

Arha curled her fingers around a forearm, a nervous gesture to anyone but Sheeana. Such is true. The mob is rarely denied. Her expression was neutral as she glanced across the courtroom, her blue-within-blue eyes noting details most were certain to miss.

Spock steps forward. His first witness, and with a case such as this, he needed it to be a strong opening.

"Mr. Guzman, could you explain to the court your involvement in the crew's encounter with the Yeerk Empire?"

Spock's pacing doesn't falter even as Paco is replaced on the stand.

"Your Highness. For posterity, could you explain to the court your relationship with the Yeerk Empire. Be as concise as possible."

< Of course. Though I feel I should mention Prince is a military title, not royal title as it is upon other species, > Elfangor said. He just didn't want to be called your highness the whole time.

< The Andalites have been the opposition for the Yeerks since the beginning of their movement to try and infest the universe. Like many Andalites do, I volunteered to join the military to try and stop the Yeerk Empire from succeeding in their goal. I have won the Andalites many battles against them over my career and considered arch enemies with the sole existing Andalite Controller. Many Yeerks fear me personally and I hold no fondness for Yeerks, > Elfangor explained. < But I would still act as is honorable while dealing with them. >

Hey, who'd have thought that Paco would end up on this side of the judge's desk his first time in a court room? Surprisingly, it sucked pretty hard from here, too.

"When a few of us were kidnapped by the giant roaches, we hid in the Clockhouse on the suggestion of some of the already-infested people," he said. "I was infested by the highest ranking Yeerk, Sub-Visser Seven, because the Yeerks viewed Jaime as the biggest threat, and hoped to be able to screw with him enough that way to kill him."

He shifted in his seat and took a deep breath. "While in control of my body, the Sub-Visser helped infest other crew members, hold them prisoner between feedings, and planned to take over this ship and use it to conquer other universes."

Spock pauses a moment between witnesses in order to collect his case. Thus far, he was content that there was a solid defence hidden amongst the anger and fear. And now he came to the defendant in question; no contention here. He was certain this line of questioning would go the way he planned, but he still couldn't count on what the prosecution might be able to tease out of him.

"Mr. Schmuz, if you could detail your role within the Yeerk Empire, including the contingent detached to this ship?"

"Doctor. I've read the crew's reports on the Yeerk incident. Is the court to believe that you were the recipient," and he has picked that word very carefully, "of a failed symbiosis? Could you also elaborate to the court what your precise involvement in the retalition was?"

Because your friend, the virtually intolerable (even by Vulcan standards) gentleman who actually communicated with said symbiote flipped me the bird when I asked him to take the stand...

And now-- the main event.

"Mr. Winchester. If you could explain to the court your involvement in the incident in question? Brevity, please."

Spock nods contentedly.

"And after their defeat? It is the understanding of the court that you, still under the influence of their senior officer's infestation, were interred in the ship's sickbay for an extended period of time. Is this correct."

Medbay/Sickbay. Old habits die hard.

Oh, but Spock is polite to the degree of being incredibly insufferable.

"A fitting title for a military trial," he replies absently. But, of course, back to the case.

"Have you killed Yeerks during your military career?"

Politeness is fine. Elfangor would never say anything against politeness, as long as it's accurate.

< Yes, on many occasions, > Elfangor answered. More than he could count, but they were honorable kills. Well...the one he froze and shot into space near the sun was questionable, but at least that one still had a shot.

His next question seems to come almost before Elfangor has finished speaking.

"And have you captured Yeerks?"
