In the Tower of High Sorcery, those ertswhile examiners of items magical and mystical would find a score or so of opportunities to put their knowledge and reason to the test -- provided, of course, that they got the proper permission from Aibghalien, who was even now pondering a horn made of brass, but shaped like one from a ram's head...

The horn was not so engrossing that the Department Head couldn't spare a moment to properly log the efforts of others, and assign them appropriately.

Well, if he's going to fuck off for the rebellion itself, he might as well get the ducks in a row before he goes. Howard knocks on the tower door, having heard something about this Aibabagababooboo guy running Magical.

Conveniently, the door is open; Aibghalien has selected an item which seems unlikely to cause collateral damage. "Come in," he said, not looking up. The world outside his study was, at the moment, a vague concept rather than a reality.

"What're you looking at?" Howard walks over to where Aibghalien is examining artifacts and tilts his head at it, as if he's completely forgotten his original intent in coming here. He hasn't, but generally you get to know someone a little before going 'oh hey so 'bout dat rebellion'.

"This horn, when blown, can randomly perform one of seven different effects... or so the magic imbued it in it tell me," he added. "Actually, that may be entirely trustworthy; in my experience items that inherently instruct their wielder on their usage and purpose are accurate the vast majority of times. My concern is rather for the drawbacks of using it, which have not been specified."

"Does it actually tell you what the seven effects are, or is it a mystery magic grab bag that might turn you into a newt?"

In response, Aibghalien offered him the horn. "Take it. I wouldn't advise blowing it, mind, but thus far simply holding it has produced no adverse reactions whatsoever."

Howard puts his hands up in a defensive gesture.

"Nah, I'll save random magical effects for another day. So is this like, you testing the new toys?"

Aibghalien nodded, taking the horn back into both hands. "Within safe and manageable confines. Items of this level of power often carry substantial, hidden drawbacks as well as concealed powers. Our duty is to determine these to the best of our ability and make a judgment on containment versus utilization."

"Where'd you get all these things?" Howard looks at each of them, wondering if some of the random crap he's hoarded away could have unintended magical effects. Maybe that's why he's still short.

"Some were present in this tower, but the majority were found in the areas of the ship revealed in the transport error some time ago."

Some people were just born short, Howard.

Lies. It clearly has to be malnutrition and Stacy magic, and he's just going to ignore that he's always been at about the 10th percentile for height.

Examination

Each artifact had its own room, some more protected and shielded than others based on the best guesses anyone had of potential danger.

Excuse her while she sneaks in and has a look around. You see, magical artifact as as much a part of a Champion's life as breathing and anything shiny and powerful will certainly catch this little foxes eyes.

Oh wait, there was a post detailing the needs and wants for these things? She wouldn't have even known, the sheer magic was enough to call on this legendary creature and her insatiable curiosity and want to further her power and knowledge.

This exact sort of situation was precisely why Aibghalien had arcane locked the doors that led to those rooms.

Too bad locked doors mean nothing when you can simply blink short distances, whoops.

True enough. Aibghalien had not believed a crew member would go to such lengths to obtain an artifact, showing that he perhaps had a more charitable perception of sapient nature than he might otherwise let on.

So having defeated the perfunctory defenses... Ahri now found herself in a room which featured a monocle, resting lightly on folded cloth in the center of a table.

Well one would think few would have such wanderlust and curiosity as the fox, that coupled with the magical innate abilities she possessed let her get through many tough binds.

Face with the shiny in front of her however, her eyes widened in amazement and she curiously side-stepped it with a studious gaze. How could something so common hold magical potential she thought, already knowing the answer considering some of the League's more well known magical artifacts.

"What do you do~? What secrets do you hold inside your magical aura? But most importantly~, What's your history my curious little knick knack...~?" she mused as she stared with predatory eyes.

It didn't answer.

So either communication or common courtesy could be ruled out, though who knew which one?

It's fine, she wasn't adept at speaking with magical items anyways, she was just a curious one and tended to speak to herself when rambling or musing.

"Now what should I do with you my precious little trinket? The details on this building say that it holds powerful and dangerous artifacts, but I'm more than certain that it also holds rather mundane or minor ones... Which one might you be~?" she asked to no one in particular.

She blew on it, waved, and even sent a bit of magic it's way if anything to poke and prod at it much like an animal would play with a toy.

The monocle remained resolutely inert through all this manhandling. None of her actions provoked a response.

"Well aren't you just so unamazing..." she huffed and flicked before finally grabbing it and bringing it closer for further inspection. At this point she was already relaxing on the ground trying to figure out what the monocle was for.

Really, it seemed nothing special. Only the protections on the door spoke of any need for caution, and really, those might have just been coincidence, or routine, right?

What is it that the nobles in the big cities do with these again? Oh right, the look through them! Or is it that they place them over one eye? Hmmm maybe she can use it as a magnifying glass to study things like the jewel cutters.

She goes up to the door and looks at it through the lens using it as a magnifying glass and see if she can learn something from it.

Having obtained the proper permissions and whatnot, Lupin stood facing a table on which lay a large opalescent strip of fabric, decorated with many signs he could not interpret. Which was a pity, as they would probably make the whole business much easier.

Before he attempted to prod it, whether magically or literally, though, the wizard first set about raising basic protections, gesturing with his wand about the room as he spoke incantations.
