Rooting around in Stacy's innards (closed to Ian Chesterton and John Crichton)

Ian had seen pictures of the spacesuits the astronauts and cosmonauts wore to go into space, but for all the space travel he'd done himself, had never actually worn one. But then this one didn't look anything like those. It didn't seem like it was enough somehow - just a plant suit between him and oxygen starvation. But he was going to have to wear it if he wanted to understand more about how Stacy worked, and he did.

It was just as well he had John with him. "Do you think this suit is enough?" he asked John, glad he wasn't anywhere near a mirror.

Sorry about the wait, gnarly shifts at work more than usual

“On three?” John asked, peering down again at the blob which was doing a lot better going up then it had chasing them earlier. They probably only had a few seconds.

He didn’t think he needed to point out that from this high up, it was possible they could sprain something or, worse, break a leg and then that was going to be a whole new problem right there. Still, he figured they were both ready to take on a broken leg over digestion by Stacy blob. Ian seemed like that kind of guy. John counted down to three and had that brief hestitation that was probably common sense kicking in before he kicked it to the background. He hadn’t made it this far by listening to it anyway.

“Three!” John pushed away from the column and suddenly he was falling through open air, hoping Ian was right on his heels and they weren’t going to break anything on the way down.

Going to have them touch and do the scan thing?

Stacy’s internals apparently had different ideas. The way out was blocked by more of those blobs and here the two humans were, stuck covered in goop and basically surrounded. John supposed he could try smacking them with his rifle but shooting these things didn’t do anything, he didn’t think he’d magically get lucky trying to rifle-whip them either. John pulled up to a stop from his attempt to run. The blob from the shaft was making for Ian as the ones blocking their way solidified into a gooey wall, the almost liquid surface seeming to breathe.

The blob closest to Ian extended a thick tendril to touch him.

John’s jaw dropped, just in time to get one of the tendrils slapping against the side of his helmet and running a sticky slime trail down from his head to his arm. That went…well, okay, that went way better than expected. They were alive and not partially digested, and it looked like they’d tested negative on the threat level to Stacy thing. John let loose the breath he’d been about to strangle himself on without even knowing it, blowing it out and feeling all the tension just go flooding out of him, just like that. He slapped Ian on the shoulder with the back of his hand.

“Looks like we lucked out. Congrats,” he grinned. “Let’s finish up here and get out before they change their minds.”

Aside from getting chased all over Stacy's bowels, he had to say it went way better than expected. He just could skip the part of doing it all over again.

John almost laughed. “At least we’re alive and we’ve got some goo, right?” He grinned behind the fogged up visor of his helmet. Ian was just a bundle of positivity and was already thinking about those samples and what they’d missed out on. True scientist right there.

They were definitely being ushered out. If he glanced around, the blobs would darken in color, almost like a warning signal. John turned back around, his shoulders bumping against Ian’s as they were squeezed out toward a series of the tunnels toward the way they’d come. At least he thought it was the way out. Stacy could probably open up new ways if she wanted to. John motioned for Ian to take the last opening first, squeezing in after him.

“Maybe we could sketch it out and ask around. Maybe the science or engineering departments might have a better idea.”

After an awkward climb up with the blobs oozing up the wall like freaky chaperones, they finally reached the exit, large open space opening up ahead of them. John finally felt he could relax and it felt downright liberating. The blobs merged back into the walls, leaving him and Ian alone and in one piece. John was the first to pop off his helmet, his sweaty hair plastered to his head as he grinned.

"Attitude like that, they probably would've loved to have you with IASA," John said. "You've mastered the can-do attitude."

John’s expression softened. Ian, he’d had that dream too. He could get it. It was just after all this time in the Uncharted Territories he’d found it hard after a point to maintain that whole innocent wide-eyed enthusiasm after a point. In a way he was jealous Ian could still feel it.

His eyes dropped down to Ian’s suit once he pointed out the whole fact it was eating a hole in it. “Hey, you better get that off!” He moved forward to help Ian get it off as fast as he could; he figured Ian was the science teacher here, they didn’t need a whole lecture on skin contamination being a big Thing and they were a ways off from any immediate help.

John was already struggling out of his, but as he peeled it off, he was relieved to see that he looked like he was in the clear. No red marks, all his limbs – and, uh, other bits – attached and that was about as much as you could ask for. Whew.

“At least you put shower before microscope,” John said with a grin. “Looks like I’m clear.”

He figured a shower – well, whatever those things are on Stacy. All he knows is they’re the freakiest things ever – and a damn nap are in order. He figured at least an hour couldn’t hurt. Far as he knew, they weren’t that pressed for him. John tried to fold his suit inside out best as he could, trying to minimize skin contact. The way Ian had been going at his arm for the past couple of minutes didn’t escape him and he was getting worried about it. Y’know what they said about getting stuff like that checked out early.

“Maybe you better hop on over to Medical. They might know what to do about that.”
