Ian watched Sirius go and then looked over a few of the wares on display while he waited for Sirius's distraction. But he was distracted by the dog instead. He watched the dog for a minute before realising that he didn't need Sirius's distraction - the dog would work just as well.
While the stall holder was occupied, Ian picked up one of the beetles. It tried to scan his hand and Ian smiled at it. It was clearly programmed to do one function. He took hold of it on either side and turned it upside down to look at it more closely. At which point it played dead. Ian poked at it, not really understanding anything he was seeing and ended up putting it on his palm, right side up. But then it carried on playing dead.
Ian prodded it worried for a moment, before deciding there was nothing he could do. He pocketed the beetle and ambled away nonchalantly. Hopefully the stall holder would just assume the dog had knocked it off and it had got lost.
