What is Love? [Valentine's Date Event]

It's shaping up to be another average day on the Transmigration 9. Crew members are going about their business as usual and all is (to most appearances, at least) about as "well" as things ever are on the ship.

Some crew members are going to be stopped out of the blue by impact with a force field.

"Attention Crewmen: You have been chosen to participate in an experiment!" GLaDOS's voice informs. They're not alone, someone else that was nearby is also caught within the same narrow radius. "Participation is mandatory. Please try to relax and enjoy the experience, as this will improve the quality of the test results."

Clearly this is going to be a wonderful day for science.

"You and your new scientific partner are now on a date," GLaDOS goes on. "As it would be detrimental to our study of the date experience if you were to be separated, you must remain close to your partner for the duration of the experiment. This will be enforced with the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field. Prolonged exposure to the Transmigration 9 Crewman Containment Field may have unexpected side-effects. While any side-effects encountered will be documented and your desire to offer yourself to science is commendable, it is not a necessary part of this experiment."

"You will be informed when the test has been completed. We would like to thank you in advance for your full cooperation in the experiment and failure to attempt to foil it in any way."

"The experiment has begun, so you may begin dating."

[OOC: The exact details of your characters' confinement are up to players' discretion. Being trapped in a sensorium or other stationary place is a possibility, as is being stuck in a sort of roving invisible force field hamster ball that only affects the two of you. How far partners can move apart is probably subject to whatever's fun but they ideally shouldn't be able to sit on opposite sides of a room ignoring one another the whole time.

ICly the "test" lasts for a few hours and you are free to godmode GLaDOS telling them the experiment is finished.

Kaya was in pretty good spirits by the time they were down. "No way Howard! I've ridden sky bison with fire benders shooting at us! This is pretty tame in comparison!"

She chuckled. "Ok, you're pretty much the captain of our grand adventures. What next?"

"Oh, come on, you have to choose too." He points to the teacups, whirling around and around. "Wanna do those? I mean, as long as we don't do them too much. My older cousins once made me go on one of those until I puked."

"I would, but the only one I'm really familiar with is the Ferris wheel," Kaya protested. "I really don't have the free time that everyone thinks I do! So...you were saying something about those spinning teacups?"

What a bizarre idea for a ride.

"Neither do I. I'm just...remembering how it used to be. When I was younger. My family went to a theme park like this with my aunt and uncle and cousins once a year. It was kind of our thing." He sounds sad for a minute. "Anyway, I know my way around theme parks."

"Yes, this is why I'm defaulting to you!" Kaya said, definitely noting the sadness in his tone. "There were sort if theme parks in my world, but they were for the richer kingdoms. like the Earth or the Fire Nation. Water Tribe people were stuck defending their territories, be they North or South: the Fire nation had whittled us down enough where advancing beyond our territory wasn't possible."

It wasn't until actually traveling outside her nation that she saw what was possible.

"You know, this could sort if be our thing too. I don;t really get to do much relaxing, which you know seeing as we're in the same department, but we could try doing this every once and awhile, right?"

"So what did you guys do for fun? Fish?" Maybe the same thing they did in the FAYZ, swing between boredom and chaos. Survival scenarios seem to lend themselves to that, and the more he hears about the Fire Nation and the Water Tribe the more dire it all seems.

For a minute he looks like he's about to shoot her down, but then he nods. "Okay, sure. It's good to unwind, at least."

"We found ways to keep busy, games and playing in the snow and all," Kaya said. "If you were a bender though, you had more work cut out for you. Women had to learn how to perfect their bending to heal, and so we had to have a thorough understanding of the human body and its pressure points. If you were a male bender, you went to Master Paku to learn how to fight with bending. Civilians, well, they had to learn to fight in other ways."

Their way of life, after all, was constantly at risk so long as the Fire Nation had not conquered them.

"I agree," she said. "I've noticed you had to start giving physical evaluations. How's that going?"

"Civilians sound kind of fucked, honestly. I mean, a sword versus magical water swirly magic? My money's on the bender." Just another way, in his opinion, that life screws over the baseline people.

"Pretty good. I'm going to shank some people if they don't show up for theirs, though. I wasn't kidding about us in medical getting stun guns."

"In my village it didn't matter who was the bender and who was the civilian: well, it did in a tactical sense, but that's not what I mean. The firebenders were still our greatest enemies, so we had to work together, using both our weapons and our bending, to keep them out."

Wow. "Why would anyone want to resist going for their checkup? It'll only help in the long run. The more we know about their anatomy, the better informed we'll be to heal them, right?"

"I'm just saying, baseline people got to worry more when it comes to a fight. That's just how it is." He shrugs. It's not like he wants superpowers either. That would go way against his heartfelt desire to be a normal kid.

"Because people are idiots. That's the only excuse."

"Normally I'd agree with you," Kaya said. "People with no bending are usually in more danger than those with. But keep in mind the Fire Nation wanted to rule over all the other nations. Their biggest threat would be benders, so naturally they would be the ones imprisoned or outright killed first."

Something she knew all too well thanks to her teacher.

She sighed. "It really would be nice if we could get everyone on this. If someone has something in them that could hurt them later, we could find it out now. We can't really afford any more causalities."

But enough about that! "So how about those tea cups?"

Yes. A much more pleasant topic of conversation than who would die first back in Kaya's world or people dying on the battlefield (not that Howard is terrible averse to some people dying on the battlefield, but he's bitchy like that).

He straps into a teacup and waits for Kaya to join him.

Kaya would wholeheartedly agree. Thinking about the people dying in her world meant that she would eventually start thinking about people dying HERE. Considering the recent shake ups in the past few days, it was the last thing she wanted on her mind.

So instead she boarded oversized cups normally meant for serving tea and still looking baffled about it.

"Make sure you strap in," Howard warns her just before the teacups start. Slowly at first...and then insanely fast.

By this time, Kaya is definitely no slouch at getting ready for whatever craziness is going to happen. It starts to move slowly enough: and then it picks up speed, making the two of them spin like crazy.

Thankfully Kaya had no motion sickness.

It takes more than a single teacup ride for Howard to have a problem with motion sickness, too. He's just stoked by the time the ride ends. "Bet you didn't have that back at the Water Tribe."

Oh, she was glad to get off, Kaya was reeling a little bit after this. Roller coasters and sudden drops? Fine. Revolving teacups going around and around? Definitely not her cup of...well, not her preference.

"No, we definitely didn't," she said, balancing herself by a nearby concession stand. "Of course, we were more of the skating, slopey types."

"You feeling okay?" Howard's been on those sorts of rides enough that he doesn't sway any with his feet on the ground.

"Been better," Kaya mumbled, half laughing at herself. "You know, I've trained in Will's classroom on tightropes and balance beams. You;d think something like this would be a piece of cake!"

"You'd think they'd prepare us for spinny things in case we're in a shuttle crash. I don't know. I've been mostly training on my own. Group training reminds me too much of gym class." He already knows he can't keep up with superpowered people - why rub it in?

"Gym class." At least Kaya actually knew what that meant now. Looking at the way things were set up in Will's, she could see how things would be coordinated so hey could help more than just a small amount of students.

"Does anyone help you at least? That can be a gain. I've had a few people help me prepare for things that would come my way. It's the only reason I'm not more injured than I am."

"Yeah, Zou's teaching me. There's no way I'd know how to do it myself." Howard's able to admit that sometimes, you do need someone to show you before you try it. "Who's helping you out?"

Kaya laughed. "Man, I've had a long list. Kang's the one I learned basic swordsmanship, but there was also a vampire queen, Sheeana, Chase...there have been a lot I learned from. You find that you learn more and more when you open your mind. I still have a bus full of gym equipment and magic to look after, actually."

"I miss Chase. He brought me cars," Howard muses. "You going to be offloading any of that equipment?"

Kaya also looked a little sad about him leaving-he had seemed like a fairly good guy, and he had helped start training with the Outsiders pretty well.

"I don't think I could even if I wanted to," Kaya said. "But the bus is still working and I leave it open for anyone who wants to come and train and meditate there."
