Roaming, restless [After Dungeon Keeper]

Morgan was restless.

When restless, he tended to roam the ship, checking on things he knew of, or seeking out places he didn't out of curiosity. Today was a little of both. After the pitched battle in Hydroponics, he felt a particular obligation towards one plant in particular: the apple tree he'd helped Applejack grow from a seed. For all that he'd done his best to contain Hydroponic in the fight, he hadn't been able to do anything specific to protect that plant.

Done there, he headed back down in the City, off to one particular place that had caught his interest when he had heard about it: an 'air temple'. Not on the map, not listed in the directory, or he'd have wandered over just to take a look a long time ago. Now that he'd heard about it, well...

Time to investigate.

[OOC: Just say where you find him; it can be pretty much anywhere, since his trip covers a lot of ground across the ship.]

"I'm still sorry," he said, bowing his head. "Have you... said goodbye, formally? In whatever way you'd have. I can only begin to guess."

"I said goodbye to him before," Mindy said quietly. "And honestly, that's the way I want to remember it. The last thing my father was doing before I died was leading me to take out the enemy we chose to take on together. This time, some phantom alien fucker got to him even though I was gunning it to get to him, to save him. If I have to accept that he died that way, I would lose something I can't get back. So this way, things don't change: he's still dead and I'm still with the family I made on this ship. The only thing that screwed with that was the ship making him alive in the first place. It had no business to do that."

And she meant every word, because the swear words came less. She loved her father, but she made her peace with him, what right did Stacy have to bring him back just so he was taken away again?

"If that's enough for you. Goodbyes like that are for the living, after all, not the dead."

He had made goodbyes... and refused to make them. Both served their purpose. Morgan wanted to comfort Mindy, but he didn't expect she'd appreciate it. She'd probably take it as a shot at her age, even though it wasn't.

"It has to be enough. I made my life on this ship, with people that were never in my world, Morgan. There's no going back just because I want to be baby doll again. That girl was left with him when he went away. And like, Stacy comes along and..."

She shook her head. "You're at least right about that. I can't say goodbye to him again. Honestly, I didn't know how to feel after that shit. I actually stayed away from the one person who would have made it better because I didn't know what to do with myself."

"Death is a goddamn bitch to accept, sometimes," he sighed. "I don't envy you. I can only imagine how bad it would be to have someone who ought to be dead, and stay dead, show up alive just long enough to get killed. All experience has taught me is that the only real balm is time."

"It wasn't fun," she said, "and it definitely wasn't great when you it happens to you and other people and you can't do a damn thing about it. By the end I just decided to blow up as many of her fucking robots as possible, and luckily fr em I ha the Overlord helping by then. At least when I finally got home, there was somebody awesome waiting for me."

"I went down a path like that once," he said, thoughtfully. "It was a long time ago, getting revenge..."

"For twelve years of my life, I ate, breathed, slept and shat revenge. Revenge was one of the emotions that kept me going, first when I found out about mom, and then when I lost dad. I know as a mage you know better now, but for me it was one of those emotions that drew me in, that leveled me. Once that was over though, I didn't really know what to do with myself, where to go. It's the drawback to revenge: after its over, if you're still alive, you need a new place to start."

Morgan couldn't help but smile, wry and regretful though it was. "Trust me, being a mage doesn't make you a better or wiser person. Just the opposite, a lot of the time. I learned better because I grew as a person. Hell, the mistakes I made were long after I Awakened."

"Then maybe I just need to grow as a person." Mindy did not say this without a tone of amusement. "But then, now that I think about it, being stuck on this ship guarantees something is going to happen. Maybe I can find a way to believe here."

"...If I mention that my sister is a werewolf, are you gonna try to figure out how to become one of those too?" he said with a grin.

"That's just stupid," Mindy said, looking partially offended, but grinning. "Who the hell wants to be the reason teen girls are all jazzed up and dreamy eyed over lame shit?"

Granted, that was just one series but it was bad enough to ruin an entire franchise. "Besides, I'm actually serious about this."

Morgan missed that reference entirely. "What?" he said, lifting an eyebrow. "Uh, if teen girls are jazzed-up and dreamy-eyed about my sister, that would be realllllllly weird." Though he looked down at himself. "I mean, over me, sure, but obviously she's fraternal."

Mindy chuckled. "Sorry, just a reference to one of the weirdest damn cult books I've seen in awhile. trust me, if your sister read it, she probably wouldn't stop puking for a week. But that's still pretty cool, that she's a werewolf. How does that happen again."

"It's genetic... sort of. There's a spiritual component to it as well, but basically, if you're related to a werewolf, you're Kinfolk. If two Kinfolk, or a Kin and a werewolf, have a child, there's a small chance the child will also be Garou. In this case, my dad was the werewolf and my mom was the Kinfolk. That also means I'm kin, so if you know any really hot werewolf girls..." He grinned, teasing. Obviously she didn't, here or before.

Yeah, Mindy unfortunately didn't get out much, and she figured she was a horrible match maker as a result. In any case, it was still pretty interesting to learn about that part of Morgan. "Then you guys probably do look pretty different. I gotta say though, I'm real curious to learn about your world now, with all the stuff that goes on in it."

"We both got my mom's hair and skin tones. Otherwise she takes after my mom and I take after my dad." Or at least that's what pictures, and friends of the family, said.

"It's Earth," he said with a shrug. "There's just a whole lot behind the scenes, where most people never notice it."

"Then she must look good too then," Mindy said loftily, swimming in a circle. "If I'm judging by tone and hair, since yours is a good combo at any rate."

Earth? Really? How had there been Jedi on Earth and she didn't know about it? Must be another one of those alternate dimension type of things. "How do people not notice werewolves and magic?"

He shrugged, not being inclined to pass judgment on his sister's looks. "Because everyone wants them covered up. Mages, werewolves, vampires, everything else, not one of them wants a hint of the existence of the supernatural getting out to the masses."

Yeah, that sounded a lot like her version of earth, what with the covering up of everything so that humans didn't start to get all about their business.

"That makes sense: people might go ballistic if they knew magic and separate dimensions actually existed in other parts of the universe. I can't speak well for people in my world: a lot of the time, they tend to be pretty violent, me included, and pretty intolerable. But some of us also know we can be better than what we were made to be, you know?"

"That IS the downside. The more people stop believing in magic...." He exhaled, then finally let himself drop into the water up to his neck.

"But that's not gonna happen here, right?" Mindy said, looking as if the idea of something happening to Morgan bothered her more than she let on. "I mean, people here are all full of magic. It can't affect you, can it?"

"Here on the ship? No, it's very easy to work magic here." He stood up, put his palms flat on the pool's water, then blithely did a handstand on the surface as if it were solid. "People believe in magic, of all sorts."

She watched him, not saying anything. The more she watched Morgan and what he could do, and particularly after all that happened recently, the more she wanted to learn to do what he could. But it was more than that, than just protecting the guys she knew about, or just getting stronger.

"Morgan," she said, "if someone you really cared about was gone, like what happened, how do you deal with that?"

Well, that was a hell of a question. He flipped lightly back into the water, sinking down into it again as he pondered how to answer.

"Tough call," he said, finally. "I don't think the ways I've dealt with it in the past would work for you. The situations are too different. I think the first question is... really, how do you feel? In utter honestly, deep down?"
