On the Obs Deck, the following mission information was displayed, for any who cared to see:

Mission: Assist the crew of the Saratoga in investigating the communications loss with the deep oceanic station, Deepstar 7.

Zouichi smiled politely, but backed up a step or two. "If you're part of a protest group, I assure you that Toua takes the rights and wellbeing of its artificial humans very seriously."

With a name like that, Allenby was probably part of some group that had hacked into the Shikiomi somehow. He'd heard this happened every once in a while with the other environments, but not with the newest generation's...

"I ain't a protester!" Allenby said. "If you got rebooted, or whatever--" She ground her teeth together. "I am gonna kill Stacy for this. She's got no right to be doing this to your head!"

Unless... she was the one hallucinating? Maybe she really didn't know him. "Hey. Where the hell is this anyway?"

What a strange person. And who was Stacy? Maybe Allenby was some kind of simulation after all.

"This is the Shikiomi. It's where we're being trained before we're released into the real world." So basically, you might say it was Zouichi's hometown. Sort of.

A dark-haired young woman came through the grass toward them, peering at Allenby. "Hello," she said. "I didn't know we were expecting visitors. Is everything all right?"

"Hey lady, what the hell's going on?" said Allenby. So rude, answering a question with a question. "Either Zouichi's got his brain wiped or I'm goin' crazy, because I know him but I never heard of Shikiomi and I sure ain't in your training program."

"His brain... wiped? Why would anyone want to do that?" she shook her head. "This is a learning environment; we'd be undoing all the work we've already done. I'm Kurokawa, by the way. Kurokawa Saya. And right now, we're in Toua Heavy Industries's main headquarters building."

For his part, Zouichi seemed a good deal more comfortable with Saya around, as though her mere presence was reassuring. He didn't even react as the scenery shifted, becoming a sleek, high-tech underground laboratory setting.
