This will not be a relic.

A little after the Shodan attack, Mindy would learn that both Sasami and Negi would be repodded, further darkening her mood after all of the fight: no victory, nothing to be really proud of, just a good, swift win. That was life on Stacy, so be it. What was more, for all intent purposes, "Mindy" had to make sure to look broken up about the death of her father, which was obviously not a stretch. But there was something, in her estimation, that needed to be taken care of first and foremost, which was why Ruffnut would notice that there was no Mindy around the castle for the last few days. In fact, Mindy had spent that time in and out of the Juraian Royal Palace, through the permission of Starfire, of course. This was because she was cleaning out the debris those fucking robots left behind in the one place Mindy was adamant needed to be preserved: The First Tree Cafe.

Or formerly that, anyway. The sign had been done away with, with a new sign replacing it: Negi and Sasami's Diner. Granted, the inside was still a bit of a fixer upper, but the lights were working, the chairs were clean of garbage and robot entrails, and a now dusty but accomplished looking girl was busy inside, busy cooking.

Outside there was another sign: Negi and Sasami's Diner
Under New Management
Alien Burgers
Apple Pies
Soup
Ask for anything else and you will get punched in the face.
More food to be added at a date TBD.

[To Note: Splitting this post in two: for those coming into the restaurant, and Mindy going back to the castle.]

Unaware of what Mindy was thinking and with no way of knowing about her fame in a handful of other worlds, Elisa smiled at the confession.

"It definitely smells good," she noted, impressed by the amount of effort she'd put into preparation. Elisa considered herself to be an excellent judge of character and she certainly seemed honest. (They didn't have anything along the lines of a health inspector on Stacy, but they did have a fairly tight knit community that had to trust each other to survive. That was enough.) "What does it taste like?"

"Definitely," said Elisa, flashing Mindy a bright grin of her own in return. It did sound quite nice and, even if it wasn't, it was something new and certainly worth a try. "I love things with a bit of a kick." Especially jalapenas.

"That was a great sales pitch, by the way," she added.

"Thanks!" It was an unusual compliment, but Mindy's tone and her cheerful grin made it difficult to take it as anything else. "You're going to get a lot of customers whatever you do. No one's going to miss a chance like this."

The slop could have been a lot worse, but it wasn't exactly full of flavour.

"I'm Elisa," she added, holding out a hand, "Elisa Maza."

"It's good to meet you, Mindy," she said, sincerely. She couldn't be certain how long it had been since she'd woken up from the pods, but it had been a few months at least and it was always good to meet someone new. Especially when that person was doing what they could to make life on the ship better for everyone.

"I'm from New York. Which you may or may not have heard of. It seems to feature in quite a few universes."

Elisa grinned. From what she’d gathered so far, there were lots of versions of her home city out there and they were all very different, but the prospect of a few familiarities was enough to make her smile. She missed Manhattan.

“It was 1996 when I left, so that really depends on what year it was for you.”

Although the existence of the clan wasn’t a secret on the ship, she’d spent so long helping to keep them hidden that it was still difficult to speak about them freely.

"That sounds like New York. Some things never changed."

Mindy was very young to have been so close to the ugly side of the city, though Elisa knew better than to comment on that. For one thing, it might damage their fledgling friendship. For another, there was a good chance that she was more than she seemed. A good detective didn’t pass judgements based on appearances alone and the ship must have woken her up for a reason.

"My friend Goliath is here. You'll remember him if you've met. The wings are pretty distinctive."

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That was broadly true, but Elisa had to hope that things would be different in her world in the future. The gargoyles had been revealed to the human race the day before she'd been snatched up into the pods. They deserved to be accepted.

"He is in my world. Have you met any of the others?"

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
“I meant anyone else with wings,” she said, “Goliath and Bronx are the only gargoyles on the ship.”

It was a topic that she and Goliath had discussed on more than one occasion and a major concern now it was clear that the pods where they slept were far from safe.

“… a Pegasus? Really?” That was new.

She gestured at Mindy’s cooking.

“Do you need any help?”

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2012-01-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Bronx is a gargoyle beast. He's ... more like a dog." It was the best comparison that she had. "And he doesn't have wings. I'll introduce you one night."

Although probably not here, because Bronx would get through a lot of Mindy's stock if given half the chance.

"Well, just standing here and watching you work feels weird, too. I did volunteer."

Of course not!

Elisa merely smiled at that. It wasn't an attitude that many people in her New York shared, unfortunately. She was understandably protective when it came to her gargoyle friends. Even now, and even though she knew that they were accepted on the ship, it was strange to talk about them so freely.

"I used to cook for my friends - the rest of Goliath's clan - all the time back in New York," she noted, pulling on an apron. "It can be therapeutic after a long day's work." A pause. "Except when Broadway tries to help, anyway."

He’d always produce a fantastic meal, but her kitchen would inevitably end up in chaos.

“I can handle them. Although I've never cooked with alien ingredients before. You'll have to give me some tips.”

It was a good job that she didn't have a problem with the seemingly unusual. A lot of people would have baulked at the idea of alien ingredients in the first place.

“I’m not used to doing nothing. I joined the security department as soon as I woke up.”

"They're probably thinking of what's going to help you after the war," Elisa pointed out, gently.

It was a difficult position. On one hand, Mindy was young to be on the front line and Elisa wasn't surprised that people on the ship were trying to get her to school instead. But, on the other hand, she'd been woken up for a reason. How could anyone expect her to forget what was going on around her long enough to concentrate on maths or history? It would have been more of a surprise if she hadn't wanted to fight.

[identity profile] newyorkbynight.livejournal.com 2012-01-31 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think most of the people on the ship come from worlds where the kids should be kept out of the fighting."

So did Elisa. She couldn't begin to imagine Mindy's frustration - of course she wanted to fight for her world and the people she loved - but it was better that way. Probably.
