Shore Leave: Geartopia [Open to All]

||Attention all crewmen, shore leave is now in progress, attention crewmen, shore leave is now in progress...||

Once, long ago, Geartopia was built by aliens visiting the planet and granting intelligence to some native species. Of course you wouldn't know this apart from the giant black obsidian monoliths humming precariously outside of town. They are formed in a circle formation that might remind those who come from earth of Stonehenge, only built out of a much more study device. This is what Nomalanga used to contact you. The rocks cannot be moved and any attacks on them will be useless. The Wild Ones will come out of the forest at night, leaving a trace of plants as they go back and fro their own forest. The technology the elder aliens left them allows for contact with Stacy but otherwise there is nothing futuristic going on on the planet - the aliens wanted it this way and for the most part the population respects this.

All except Snidley and his goons, of course. Thankfully most of them have gone into hiding once their plot was found out. In fact, Nomalanga and those still loyal to her are busy working on making this planned attack, and getting the townspeople ready for it.

You can also find a few remains of their culture scattered around the land in the form of large stone carvings around the town, in between a wooden tavern bar or used as a sort of tribute, covered in dry plants. Most of the area is dry and arid, with very tiny grass and shrubs growing over the hill, and, strangely enough, an area from town that is densely populated by forest. Few dare go in, due to it being the territory of the Wild Ones.

As you walk around, you notice that the technology is steampunk with a cowboy flare; there is one train that comes from the towns every morning at 6am and leaves at 9pm. Horses can be rented for a price (some normal, some like this), chariot rides as well. Gears and dark clothing seem to be the norm, possibly due that their source of leather. The inhabitants are mostly humans, humanoid animals, alien natives and steampunk robots.

But enough of that, let's see what you can do here:

- Saloon and bars of all sizes, most comically named with an object, and a color. You can find all sorts of them across town, but those on the western side are more sympathetic towards Snidley and hate strangers with a passion. Do not go there unless you're ready to fight a few of them.

They do, however, have the best drinks, and card games.

There are hotels with gear pianos playing wistful tunes as you drink hard liquor made from cactus juice, honey and barley. The honey wine is especially prized and costly.

There is also a small carnival with steampunk and old west fair, sugar and cactus fruit pies, whole animals roasted over open pits, musicians, and a single wooden coaster. It's not much, but the food is excellent.

Be careful, however. The cactus fruit does cause stomach aches for most people not native to this world. Think of it much like lactos intolerance. It's a chance you take eating it. However if you do, it tastes much like an orange, strawberry and a banana were put together in a blender.

As thanks for helping her out, anyone stepping into the city is given by the mayoress as part of her exchange bartering price, one cowboy hat (all brown), one pair of steampunk goggles, a steampunk vest, and, most importantly, one part of leathersnake steampunk boots. This is a gift for anyone who is just visiting to blend with the locals and to prove she's honest about her dealings. As if it wasn't obvious after the first mission, in any case. She'll need your strange and powerful manpower in the upcoming days.

And hey, if you're up to it, you can help with a little cleanup. After all most people here don't know your skills. However, it's also calm and quiet in the farms. You want to do some honest work for a day, they'll give you some of their seeds in exchange. The system seems to be based more on services and barter than any money.

There is still currency and Stacy has given you a few golden coins, spend them wisely. A few farms are opened up to sleep for free, if you don't mind being with the animals.

The General store has steampunk items for sale, but most of them are much too expensive for anyone on the ship to by. You can try to barter.

Oh and news travels fast. Cause problems, and Nomalanga won't be too happy about it.

[OKAY ALL DONE GO FOR IT. You are also free to create additional places, to post your own private logs involving the town! Contact me if you need extra information about Geartopia either via PM to things_go_boom's account or by AIM, I'll be happy to answer. NPC goons if you want to do a bunch of bar fights, just think typical cowboy stuff. Shore leave will last until the 31st and players can go to and from the ship to the city each day, so you can have your characters stay for a day or two and then come back.

People in the miniplots, the mini plots will start up in a few days! There will also be a general fight for anyone who wants to join in on the 29th. Thank you and enjoy yourselves!]

Zouichi turned to spot Jamie coming up behind him; he raised one hand in greeting, using the other to hold of the reins. His horse, a mare with a reddish-brown coat, used the opportunity to snag a tasty-looking weed off the ground and munched it with a satisfied air.

"Hey. I didn't know you rode."

"Och, why is everyone so surprised to find that out, anyway?" Jamie grouses. First Daniel and now Zouichi. To be fair, though, its not as though he's specifically admitted to either of them when exactly he's from. And unless they happened to wander into the Sensoriums at the right time, they'd not have seen him riding before, so there's really no point in being too put out about it, and the mild grumpiness vanishes.

He pulls on the reins to bring his own horse to a stop. Soon, the dapple grey mare is joining in on the grazing, having found a likely looking clump of grass on the side of the trail. "Aye, I do. Have since I was a wee lad. It was mostly either that or walking, unless you'd a cart or a carriage of some sort. Or were on the water. I could say the same for ye, though. I thought you'd prefer something more like a motorcycle."

Zouichi smiled. "Well, where I come from, there aren't many horses left. Let alone people who know how to handle them. I guess I just never thought about whether anyone on the ship knew how to ride." After all, in a megacity, there were far more efficient ways of getting around than on the back of a large equine.

"I have files on the basics of riding," he said by way of explanation. "They don't really substitute for experience, but I don't plan on jumping any canyons today, either. So I think things should be fine as long as I stick to a trail. Besides, how often will we have the opportunity to ride an actual horse?"

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-09 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Aye, that would make sense." Thinking about it, he doesn't recall seeing a lot of horses in many of the places he's been with the Doctor. It's not that hard to picture that extending to where Zouichi's from, and he nods. "You're right, though. We may not have the chance to do this again for quite some time."

His mare, having satisfied the immediate urge to snack, lifts her head from the ground and takes a few steps forward, clearly wanting to start up again. Jamie reins her in, but a thought occurs to him. Zouichi may not want to jump any canyons, but the trail here is even enough and wide enough they may be able to try something else - that is, if the man's amenable. Casually, he adds, "I don't suppose your files would tell ye how to do a wee bit of racing, do they?"

Zouichi patted his horse's neck affectionately, getting a soft whicker in in response. "I might be persuaded to give it a try," he said with a little smile. "Not quite the kind of vehicle I'm used to, but there does seem to be plenty of space. So, where to? I think this trail's supposed to circle around eventually... but don't quote me on that."

There's a small, slightly mischievous smile from Jamie at the reply, then he turns to look out over the trail. His eyes narrow for a moment as he spots something, then he ahs to himself and points. "Do ye see yon stump over there?"

It had been a tree at one point, but a lightning strike had destroyed most of it, only leaving a charred remnant behind. If Jamie didn't miss his guess, it would give them the chance to let the horses have a short run that shouldn't leave them too tired.

"I say we use that as a marker. It doesn't look as though there'd be anything to stop us between here and there, and even if for some reason it's off the trail we should be able to find our way back. What do ye think?"
ext_988045: (Default)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Zouichi looked first at Jamie, then back to the stump. "Well, I think..."

Before he'd finished his sentence, he urged his mare on. She surged forward like a shot, making her way toward the stump. Fair play, what was that?

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-14 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh-ho, so that's how he wants to play it, does he? As soon as he catches on to what's happening, Jamie flicks the reins to encourage his own mare to take off after Zouichi's. "Come on! Yah!"

Granted, they've got a bit of a lead on him, but it's not the first time that Jamie's done this sort of thing. Time to see if his horsemanship can match up against that few seconds head start - and that programming. He lets his horse have her head, and she races down the trail at a high rate of speed, hooves pounding in the packed dirt as they attempt to narrow the gap between them and the other pair.

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie's horse began to overtake Zouichi's as they ran on -- reading a book on riding (or having some files on it) wasn't quite the same thing as thundering down a trail yourself, after all. Zouichi did his best to make it interesting, though, urging his mount to take a good solid leap over an old felled log in the way, for instance, instead of going around. For her part, his mare seemed to be enjoying the run.
bonnypiperlad: (determined)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-16 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Jamie's mare is enjoying herself as well, and when it comes time for her to jump that log in the way, she does so with very little prompting on his part. But try as he might, he can't quite get her to pull ahead of Zouichi's mare completely, leaving them more or less even as they approach the final stretch leading up to the stump.

At this point, either one of them could pull off the 'victory', such as it is. It's just a matter of who can coax that last bit of speed out of their mount and finish first.
ext_988045: (Default)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-16 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
In the end, Zouichi is just too reluctant to ask too much out of his own horse (and unsure what 'too much' is), so it's Jamie's mount that reaches the stump first. He brought the mare to a gradual stop, patting her neck affectionately.

"Too bad," he said with a smile. "Maybe I'll win next time."
bonnypiperlad: (peering)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
After his own mare comes to a stop, Jamie slips off her back, patting her neck much in the same way Zouichi has before loosing the cinch on the saddle.

"Aye, well," he says, with more than a hint of a grin, "Now that ye know how it's properly done, maybe ye will, at that. I'll race ye any time ye like back up in the Sensoriums to find out."

Glancing around, his eyes alight on a small stream. "Hey, we're in luck. There's some water over there. Come on, let's see about getting them cooled down a bit."
ext_988045: (Zouichi: um.)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-21 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Zouichi dismounted, leading his horse over to the stream Jamie had pointed out. "That's right," he said thoughtfully, "I guess we can race anytime. It's not quite the same, though, is it?"

The Sensoriums might feel the same, but there was always that layer of unreality to it. Still, it was probably the next best thing. "Sorry about the head start. I didn't think I'd have much chance of beating you if I didn't cheat a little."
bonnypiperlad: (notquiteserious)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-22 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
"No, it's not," he admits, as Zouichi has a point. "I suppose we could try and tame the beasties in Hydroponics and see if they'll take riders instead."

However, that's not something he's ever done, and doesn't know if it's possible - or if Stacy would get upset, given how they were more or less supposed to leave the animals alone in there. He shrugs. "I'm not sure how well that would work, though."

Once they're at the stream, he lets his mare take a short drink - not too long, though, as he wants to avoid any risk of her cramping up. "Aye, well, ye clearly knew who the superior horseman was and had to adjust to try and compensate for that," he says, not entirely seriously. "I suppose that I can forgive ye for it."

Just in case Zouichi isn't aware he's joking, though, he flashes him a another grin - a full-fledged one, this time - before sobering up. "Although I'd not realised those files were quite so complete. I thought ye had me for a moment, there."

Zouichi laughed. "That could take some doing. Or maybe we could ride one of the Chancellor's cows." Although for actually getting around, he rather preferred his bike. He knew how it worked, and it didn't need to be fed. Well... not food, anyway.

"Oh, of course," Zouichi said, playing along with the joke. "I know my limits. I'd never try to take on a master horseman in a fair contest."

He paused briefly. "It was more or less a straight line, and there wasn't much time for me to fall behind. I suspect if there were more turns, or if my horse wasn't used to being ridden, it would have gone much differently."
bonnypiperlad: (seriously?)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-24 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Jamie arches his eyebrows, but otherwise keeps his comments on riding the Chancellor's cows to himself - mostly because he's of the opinion that's a fairly daft thing to do. So, therefore, why even bother?

Horse racing, however, proves to be a subject he's much more willing to discuss. "Aye, maybe so. But I could have had the same issue there. If my horse wasn't a strong runner, or used to being ridden, like ye said, I might have fallen far enough behind I'd not be able to catch ye no matter what I tried."

Normally he'd be brushing his horse down as part of the cooling down process, but he doesn't have one on him at the moment and he frowns to himself, thinking. Maybe he should head back and see she gets a proper cool down. If they walk for a bit, she should be alright, though. "Look, I'd to like to get her back to the stable soon. Did ye want to come with me or would ye prefer to explore more of the trail instead?"
ext_988045: (Default)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-24 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie, you are just too modest.

Zouichi hesitated for a moment. "Why don't you go ahead? I'll head back in a minute; I wanted to see what was at the end of this section of the trail." Besides, he shouldn't take up too much of Jamie's time. They likely wouldn't have much of it to spend here.
bonnypiperlad: (So...)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-25 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, it could have happened that way. Possibly.

"Fair enough," he says with a nod, re-tightening the straps on the saddle so he can mount back up. "Look, if I don't see ye back at the stables, maybe I'll see ye a bit later on, then."

Jamie figures he'll have some time to catch up more with Zouichi before they leave. It's not as though there wouldn't be time for that, even with Snidley's planned attack. They've prepared for that, so what could possibly go wrong?
ext_988045: (Zouichi: ...)

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing could go wrong! Nothing at all!

Zouichi nodded in return. "All right. But take care of yourself. I have a feeling we'll see a surprise or two before we're off the planet."
bonnypiperlad: (solemn2)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2011-11-27 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Aye, well, I hope not, but I'll not be surprised if something goes wrong here, too." Jamie says, somewhat pessimistically.

He's half expecting that to be the case anyway. Things tend to go wrong more often than not, in his experience. But he'll deal with that too, when if that comes.

Lifting a hand to wave to Zouichi, he flicks the reins, urging his mare into a slow, but steady walk back towards the stables.
