Shore Leave: Geartopia [Open to All]

||Attention all crewmen, shore leave is now in progress, attention crewmen, shore leave is now in progress...||

Stacy's voiced called the entire crew, until all of them were gathered at the Obs Deck. Then, a dossier appeared on the screens, along with the image of a rotating planet.

Planet Designation: Geartopia
Status: Terrestrial, H-class.
Non-sentient life: Extensive flora and fauna.
Semi-Sentient Life: Yes.
Sentient Life: Homo Sapiens, Homo Animalia, Machina Erectus.
Water: 20.6% of the planet's surface.

Nomalanga has given us a map with which areas to avoid.
Mission: Shore leave, and preparing for an attack in a few days, planet's time. Nomalanga has promised food, clothing and animals in exchange for your cooperation in aiding her.

Once, long ago, Geartopia was built by aliens visiting the planet and granting intelligence to some native species. Of course you wouldn't know this apart from the giant black obsidian monoliths humming precariously outside of town. They are formed in a circle formation that might remind those who come from earth of Stonehenge, only built out of a much more study device. This is what Nomalanga used to contact you. The rocks cannot be moved and any attacks on them will be useless. The Wild Ones will come out of the forest at night, leaving a trace of plants as they go back and fro their own forest. The technology the elder aliens left them allows for contact with Stacy but otherwise there is nothing futuristic going on on the planet - the aliens wanted it this way and for the most part the population respects this.

All except Snidley and his goons, of course. Thankfully most of them have gone into hiding once their plot was found out. In fact, Nomalanga and those still loyal to her are busy working on making this planned attack, and getting the townspeople ready for it.

You can also find a few remains of their culture scattered around the land in the form of large stone carvings around the town, in between a wooden tavern bar or used as a sort of tribute, covered in dry plants. Most of the area is dry and arid, with very tiny grass and shrubs growing over the hill, and, strangely enough, an area from town that is densely populated by forest. Few dare go in, due to it being the territory of the Wild Ones.

As you walk around, you notice that the technology is steampunk with a cowboy flare; there is one train that comes from the towns every morning at 6am and leaves at 9pm. Horses can be rented for a price (some normal, some like this), chariot rides as well. Gears and dark clothing seem to be the norm, possibly due that their source of leather. The inhabitants are mostly humans, humanoid animals, alien natives and steampunk robots.

But enough of that, let's see what you can do here:

- Saloon and bars of all sizes, most comically named with an object, and a color. You can find all sorts of them across town, but those on the western side are more sympathetic towards Snidley and hate strangers with a passion. Do not go there unless you're ready to fight a few of them.

They do, however, have the best drinks, and card games.

There are hotels with gear pianos playing wistful tunes as you drink hard liquor made from cactus juice, honey and barley. The honey wine is especially prized and costly.

There is also a small carnival with steampunk and old west fair, sugar and cactus fruit pies, whole animals roasted over open pits, musicians, and a single wooden coaster. It's not much, but the food is excellent.

Be careful, however. The cactus fruit does cause stomach aches for most people not native to this world. Think of it much like lactos intolerance. It's a chance you take eating it. However if you do, it tastes much like an orange, strawberry and a banana were put together in a blender.

As thanks for helping her out, anyone stepping into the city is given by the mayoress as part of her exchange bartering price, one cowboy hat (all brown), one pair of steampunk goggles, a steampunk vest, and, most importantly, one part of leathersnake steampunk boots. This is a gift for anyone who is just visiting to blend with the locals and to prove she's honest about her dealings. As if it wasn't obvious after the first mission, in any case. She'll need your strange and powerful manpower in the upcoming days.

And hey, if you're up to it, you can help with a little cleanup. After all most people here don't know your skills. However, it's also calm and quiet in the farms. You want to do some honest work for a day, they'll give you some of their seeds in exchange. The system seems to be based more on services and barter than any money.

There is still currency and Stacy has given you a few golden coins, spend them wisely. A few farms are opened up to sleep for free, if you don't mind being with the animals.

The General store has steampunk items for sale, but most of them are much too expensive for anyone on the ship to by. You can try to barter.

Oh and news travels fast. Cause problems, and Nomalanga won't be too happy about it.

[OKAY ALL DONE GO FOR IT. You are also free to create additional places, to post your own private logs involving the town! Contact me if you need extra information about Geartopia either via PM to things_go_boom's account or by AIM, I'll be happy to answer. NPC goons if you want to do a bunch of bar fights, just think typical cowboy stuff. Shore leave will last until the 31st and players can go to and from the ship to the city each day, so you can have your characters stay for a day or two and then come back.

People in the miniplots, the mini plots will start up in a few days! There will also be a general fight for anyone who wants to join in on the 29th. Thank you and enjoy yourselves!]

"Great!" Maxine said, very loudly and enthusiastically. She was genuinely happy and proud that the two of them had managed to herd the animals successfully. "That was awesome," she said encouragingly, letting her wind die down to a gentle breeze for a second before it dissipated completely. "Is there anything else we should do?"

"I did, yes!" Maxine intoned brightly, and with a nod. "So I've not been awake for very long. It's kind of a lot to take in, and I'm pretty sure there's still a lot that I need to tackle and to understand and everything, but I'm getting there, so it's okay, I think."

"Right! It's nice. Kind of like being out in the country at home, or something. Only more steam punk-y, you know?"

The fact that he had exposed his face to her meant a lot in a war scene. At least he trusted her enough to do as such.

She offered a respectful nod and looked up to him.

"I do hope I can continue being of help. While I don't speak much, it doesn't mean I don't have my full devotion to our cause and my full desire to work alongside others to fight our enemy. So if you ever desire to do as such, you may contact me over the comms."

Again, another first for her since she had arrived in the ship.

Of course that was Kang's view. Rachel couldn't knock practicality, per se, but still. "Because everyone needs more than one whole outfit," she said blandly.

However, her face changed into something a lot more triumphant at that. Her smile was maybe a little too sweet. "You wouldn't want to insult anyone, would you?" she asked. "Besides, it's not that bad."

"There is nothing wrong with a phlegmatic humor, though I myself have been most often said to be choleric or melancholic by nature." He nods back, and looks out over the fields.

"I will contact you, in time, if nothing else to meet you in the sensorium for training."

He slides his helmet back on after a moment, his voice again muffled and static-sounding. "But for now, I shall take my leave. I will be seeking out this Kang, perhaps he has come down to the planet." He bows to her, his armor making a dull growl as he does so, the servomotors compensating for and assisting the movement.

"Good day to you, Satellizer El Bridget. The Emperor protects."

He turns to leave, but doesn't stride off so quickly she can't bid him a farewell if she so desires. He may be abrupt, but he's not trying to be purposefully rude.

"Why can't you talk?" he asked.

Wakka, you realize, don't you that...

You...

Oh.

"Not bad. Different. There are 1,000 chapters of the Emperor's Astartes at large in the galaxy. We all have different ways, different mindsets. The sons of Vulkan are pragmatic and humane. The Black Templars, my own chapter are faith, zeal and ferocity. The sons of Fenris are brute savagery. The Blood Angels combine bloodlust with artistry, the Ultramarines pride themselves on their doctrinaire methods of war, and our progenitor chapter, the Imperial Fists, are siege-masters without compare, stubborn and unyielding."

He contemplates the idea of a family for a bit, and a melancholic silence falls on the warrior, then says, "For a being such as yourself, imagine that there are many kinds of horses. You ran with horses that were alike. And now you are alone among smaller beings. Sheep and things. There is only one other horse, and he is not your family, though he is also a horse. That is how strange I feel."

Satella salutes in turn as she watches him walk away.

"Good day to you as well Sir Erhart Ritter."

That was a name she would keep in mind. It seemed to be one of the few who had managed to make her feel comfortable enough to speak with. Which were very few mind you.

Daniel focused on the ceiling or rather, the dark blurs he could see that were probably the rafters. Not all that interesting, but he didn't think Vala would appreciate him watching her face for reactions. Plus if she got offended, Daniel was already halfway over to rolling the other way. The answer she gave him sounded glib enough. Either he was wildly wrong, she was fine, just drunk like she said, or she was trying to blow him off for some reason.

"I don't know. You just went weird there for a second." He suppressed the cringe. Like he knew what was normal for her. Daniel almost sounded like she did, except Vala at least had some story why she knew him, and from what he'd heard so far, there was some foundation to it. He, on the other hand, had as much rights to acting like he knew her as he did telling Sam her business as a Captain.

"Hey?" Sorry, John. In this case you've just happened to run into someone who was born a couple hundred years before Clint Eastwood, and still thinks of movies as 'moving pictures'. Really, the lad needs an education here.

And possibly some stronger booze, because that kick he's expecting when he takes that drink just isn't happening, and he frowns at the glass. It's no stronger than regular ale. Unless it's one of those ones that sneaks up on you well after the fact. He casts a sideways glance at John, trying to figure out if that's the case or not.

"Aye, I have. I'm not so sure I'd compare them to roaches...well, they are a bit bug like, come to think of it. More dangerous than roaches, though. That's not to say they can't be killed. Ye just need to know how to do so." He, too, downs the rest of his glass, then motions for another refill. "I think ye might be a while with this stuff. Did ye ask for something in particular when ye first ordered?"

Maybe he was just imagining things a moment ago and there was some other reason for John's reaction. Who knows, really?

"Good afternoon." Ian smiled and stopped beside them man. There weren't many people here who weren't natives or dressed like one. And Ian was curious about the books. "Are you doing some research?"

A little wariness can't hurt, especially when there's a faction in the town who already dislikes the crew because some of them have interfered in their plans - but Daniel does have a point. "Aye, well, I suppose so. But I'll still say that you'll be not able to talk to some of them easily."

Whether or not they then decide to pull a gun on Daniel at that point, well, that's a whole other story. In the meantime, he looks at the archeologist in mild disbelief. "Aye, of course I do. I'd not be risking my neck on some strange mechanical beastie if not."

Well, not without good reason, anyway. There's always exceptions to that particular rule of his. Without really thinking about it, he adds, "It's not as though there were a lot of options back in my day, anyway. Ye could walk, or ride, or take a ship, depending on where ye were. Not much more than that, really."

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, sure," said Atom as they were seated, looking out the window. "I just never really had time to go. What about you?"

He didn't go to circuses, though.

Okay, so it wasn't just him. John had been wondering if it was one of those times him being a lowly human was going against him and instead of some space version of a wine cooler flooring him (while D'Argo had to drag him back to Moya; something about "no more ool for you, Crichton"), that it was the other way around. Alien booze couldn't get it up with his human physiology. Would've been a first. John almost didn't know how to react when for once bar hopping didn't involve getting Gargeblasters to the face every single time.

John glanced up as the bartender came back with a big grimy jug of the stuff and thunked it down on the table. That itch in the back of his skull wasn't as bad as before but he was aiming to shoot high and that meant he planned to keep right on drinking.

Anyway, at least he wasn't alone to go sulk in his corner. John figured as drinking buddies went, you could do a lot worse than some Intergalactic Scot.

"Nah, I just pointed and grunted, caveman style." The corners of John's mouth turned up in one of those grins of his. "So if Stacy can use those powers - or tech - to pull people from everywhere, what stops her from just shipping the Ohm into a sun or a black hole?"

The technology it took to achieve that kind of thing blew his mind. It was scary. It made all the tech back in the Uncharted Territories suddenly look like a giant Nerf game. Without realizing it, John was staring at Jamie with a look that was calculating, a glint behind his eyes that wasn't his. The human in the next moment turned back to his drink.

Atom shook his head. "I think that's it! C'mon, let's go ask the farmer if we can get a ride now!"

He began making his way up to a grassy hill, where a canine man in coveralls was looking after a group of horses, some still grazing and saddle-less in the field.

"You might say that," answered Soren, motioning to their surroundings. "Or at least, what research can be performed on a backwater such as this. Barely any contact with the rest of the 'universe', no real information on our true enemy."

It was clear that Soren had deemed this planet not truly worth of their time. "They don't even have a decent selection of tomes."

"I think I'm fairly safe," Vala replied with a level of superiority, confident in the Naquadah in her bloodstream prohibiting any silly liver holes. It was why Earth alcohol never touched her, at least that was her theory. It took much heavier doses of anaesthesia to knock her out after all, Doctor Lam had confirmed that, and alcohol wasn't so different.

It wasn't lost on her that a horrendous part of her life had left her with a legacy she wasn't sure was a good thing or bad. It'd be nice to get drunk from time-to-time and not have to drink her own bodyweight in alcohol to achieve that, but it had its advantages in situations like this. She could match anyone drink for drink and be the one still standing at the end.

"And it beats all the ridiculously weak Earth drinks for a change."

Castiel had a permanent frown on his face, inspecting all the glasses in front of him before he picks the first one up, downing the alcohol in one shot.

Hm.

"I'm just not used to being this drunk, it's a long time since alcohol affected me to such extremes."

When it really mattered Vala lied easily, albeit there was an unmistakeable level of hurried dismissal to her reply. She rolled away from him and buried a hand under the pillow plumping it up into her face as she did, and stared off into the darkness of the room.

"Besides, you'll get used to me being weird and unpredictable. It's a talent of mine. I've practiced." She added with much more of her usual sass.

"More or less the same," Tim said with a faint frown as he sat down. "I liked the circus as a kid, but it stopped being feasible to go." And things like clowns didn't have a very good reputation in Gotham, anymore. "Other things to worry about-- which I'm sure you can sympathise with."

He glanced out the window as the ferris wheel began to rise.

"I suppose so." He did have a point. But it wasn't like they had a choice about where to go and what planets to stop at. "Perhaps you should enjoy yourself while you have the chance."

"Yeah," said Atom. "There's always stuff in the way. But I guess I can't really complain. I mean, someone's got to be around to go to all the meetings and the hearings and everything." Alas.

"I don't like circuses much, though."

That got Ian his very first look of disdain from Soren. Hurray!

"Enjoy myself. In the middle of a war. Tell me, exactly how do you suppose I should enjoy myself when the rest of my world has been destroyed? When we know practically nothing of the forces that destroyed it, and when our supposed allies in this war give us only what scraps of the larger picture they see fit?"

Soren. Was not enjoying himself.

[identity profile] tetsuwan-atom.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Atom sighed. "Oh, you know. All kinds of stuff. I didn't really understand what Professor Ochanomizu went through until I started getting all these requests. I mean, he's the Minister of Science, but they were asking him to approve designs for the new police patrol cars. It's kind of easier to make decisions than tell people why you don't want to, but then more and more people ask you to make 'em."

Sighhhhhh.
