Archaeology, Natural Disasters and You [Closed]

The trip down revealed that Taleen was going to be of several things, none of which were pleasant. Arid, pale with a light dusting of red from the rocks, and yellow-white grass that extended in plains all the way towards far off mountains . There was a giant gash in the land near the orb landing area, which resolved itself into a massive canyon as the party drew closer. Spider webbing out across the top of the canyon were signs that a civilization had once flourished here. Traces of broken pillars and half submerged buildings, as well as what looked like a downed ship that had embedded itself in a massive building. There was no movement visible amongst the ruins now. As the dry wind blew through the stonework, it would became clear that they were walking into a mass graveyard.

Not somewhere you'd want to spend your vacation.

For some people, this was going to be a field day.

According to the scans and what little records they had, there hasn't been a sentient being around for hundreds of years. The majority of native wildlife had moved out of the area, seeking refuge. The land looked dead already. In the sky above, several specks of light twinkled in the sky, growing bigger with each passing hour. In a few days, it will be raining fire.

Sounds like a plan!!!

"Captain Eneesh!!" When it comes down to it, Jamie is actually rather pleased to see the insectoid ship's captain again. It's nice that there's a familiar face around that isn't on Stacy. He avoids his usual familiarly thumping the other person by way of greeting, because he's not at all sure how she would take it - and he's not at all sure that he wouldn't come out of it in one piece.

However, he does give her a warm smile. Hopefully that would be enough. "Aye, you're looking good as well." Frankly, he can't tell if she is or not. The Doctor might, but given how well the pair of them got along before, he's not about to go try and track the Time Lord down to get the explanation. "I'd not thought we'd get a chance to see ye again, let alone work with ye."

The Captain clicks at him. "It's not big of a universe. Besides, my crew could use a...what did I hear one of your own call it? A 'milk run'. Yes, I think that's the right term."

She remembers something then, reaching into one of those pouches at her hip with one of her main claws and chittering away to herself. One of those great big, beautiful multi-faceted eyes cocks and fixes on Jamie, close enough he can probably see his reflection. After a bit of fishing around, Eneesh pulls out a small arm band. It's not quite as colorful as his kilt but the tassels hanging off from it look like they've been worked from filaments of metal, the same kind as her own drab kilt and it looks old, not just bug's idea of old but really old.

"Old communicator. My ancestor had one. She was a Queen, you know." Eneesh says with no envy at all. "Before we evolved to have our own internals. You should have this, as true leader of this expedition."

She holds it out to Jamie after dusting it off on her exoskeleton.

As he looks up, he does in fact catch sight of himself reflected in those multi-facted eyes, which is a strange sight to see - all those tiny hims there. Is that how she sees him, in bitty pieces?

There's a curious glance at the arm band as it's removed. It may not be as colorful as the kilt, but he's seen enough metal work to know that it's quite well crafted, and it looks like it's stood the test of time very well indeed. He's a little surprised when she offers it to him - and touched as well, that she thinks so highly of him. Especially given that bit about her ancestor that she's just mentioned. Still - he's not in charge here, at all. Not even close, in this case. It doesn't seem right to accept it without her knowing that.

"I'm not the leader here, Captain Eneesh. We're all trying to work together to save what what we can while we can. But...if ye still think it's something I should have, I'd be honored to wear it."

"Yes, I know. Your chain of command is...odd. It's not as obvious as it could be," Eneesh sniffs. Or she would sniff, if she had a proper nose. She cocks her head from side to side at Jamiemcrimmon's's remark and tries to make sense of it.

Like apologies, being honored at a gift is something new to her. It was rather just fact that she should give a priceless heirloom to someone she perceives as higher ranking than her. Eneesh leans over, her massive shadow falling over the fleshling as she points with one of her claws at the bracelet and shows Jamiemcrimmon how to use it. It's a bit rickety but the tech is still sound...even if it's a bit more gooey than the omnicomms because the more she uses, the more it starts oozing a little. A little holo shimmers on as she takes his arm in hers, trying to be gentle, and turns the comm bracer to the light. Currently it shows a rough layout of the dig site, glowing dots scattered across the map to show where the various crew members are located.

"Easy, I think. If you need to contact myself or my ship, you have to touch it like this."

Eneesh strokes the bracelet as if she's playing the harp.

"We like Stacy. Good ship. Very smart, from what we've heard. Her crew pays us well. So if you call with this, we'll bump you up on the priority list if you need our services again. Understand?"

There's a slight intake of breath as she takes his arm, but her gentleness pays off - as does the fact that his arm is a little sturdier than his hand when it comes to avoiding being crushed.

He's not entirely sure that oozing is a good thing, but it doesn't seem to have any immediate ill effect, so he sets that particular worry off to one side in his head. Later he can have someone who's better with tech take a look and make sure its safe.

For now he watches the demonstration intently, fascinated as the holo of the dig site shimmers into being. The little dots must be the people, although it's hard to tell just yet which dot belongs to which person. That'll be easy enough to figure out once he can watch the people moving about and use the holo for reference.

"Like this?" He reaches out, copying her motion with the bracelet. While stringed instruments aren't his forte, he's deft enough with his fingers that it's an easy gesture to make, and he can see well enough how it works.

"Aye, I understand, and I'll be sure to let the others know. Thank ye for showing me how it works." He studies the bracelet again, struck once again by the crafting of it. Even without the holographic image and the drabness, it's a pretty piece, and there's something about the metal that seems different. Maybe it's because it's old, or maybe it's because it resembles her kilt but is more delicate - he's not quite sure which. "Ye said that it was made before ye developed your own...internals, ye said? Were your people always metal workers?"

"Exactly like that. You learn quickly." Eneesh would smile, if she has a fleshling's mouth. She's glad she doesn't. She does that jerk-tilt of her head at his next question. "My species? We had a...relationship with another hive. A different one. Not our species. They used to make these for us, until we evolved enough to have our internals."

Her tone of voice is as matter-of-fact as it has about everything, Doctor anything aside, and right now it's up in the air what happened to that relationship. She doesn't seem to care herself either way if Jamiemccrimmon asks, especially since he outranks her, and anyway, it's old old old history. Countless generations to her. It might as well have happened to someone else because it did. It's hard for her to take any offense at whatever curiosity this fleshling might have.

In general, Jamie has quite a lot of questions on any given day, especially about things he doesn't know. Since Eneesh doesn't seem to mind answering questions, he take the chance to spend the next little while asking - like if she knows what metal goes into the bracelet, what an 'internal' actually is, and some other things about her people that he's been wondering about since their first meeting. Even with the communicator, he doesn't know if he'll have the chance to talk to her again after this mission. He'd like to think that he will, but the reality of the situation is that something could happen to either one of them to prevent that from happening. So he's glad to have the chance to talk with her a bit.

Eventually, though, the break time is over. There's still plenty of things to do, like finishing setting up the camp and making sure any stray beasties stay far away - and, of course, trying to actually salvage the artifacts. And while he may not be the best at that last one, he can certainly help with the other two. So, reluctantly, he goes back to work.
