Lirath - Ground Battle

After dropping off some of the crew at Balisair, it was time for the crew to set course for Lirath. The situation greeting them wasn't the most promising.

The cracked surface of the moon called Lirath was one of its most unmistakeable features. One of the three moons of the planet Kehoe, it had been terraformed and served as a settlement for a hundreds of different species, some humanoid, some not. Despite occasional class struggles, environmental issues, and speciesism blocking their way, the darker parts of Lirath's past were largely left behind, and an era of peace and tolerance had reigned for quite some time. The only problems they'd had recently were with a terrorist group whose cause for their actions had been a mystery, but they weren't tied to any particular species or social group and had been likened to a cult and had largely gone quiet in recent years.

Now the peace on the moon of Lirath had been shattered by the invasion of the Ohm.

The capital city had been destroyed. Now, all that was left of the peoples of Lirath was evacuating from one of its smaller cities, one known as Smyteval. A desert city, existing in a valley in between a rocky range of canyons and mountains, even though it was in the low ground, the natural channels of rock served as bottlenecks for any Ohm attacking from the ground.

GIA squadrons patrolled in space, locked in explosive warfare, protecting the Bleed-gate that had been activated to see the evacuated ships to the refugee world, and a shield created by massively-powerful shield generators extended around the city and up into the atmosphere, creating a shielded tunnel so ships could escape.

Word had come that there was a vital weapon to be deployed on Lirath, one that needed to be destroyed, hence why the Transmigration 9 had been called in. Given the diverse crew, and the ships that were in its hangar, there was at least someone or something on board that could blow the weapon up if it did show.

There was no sign of it yet. Right now, there was just chaos, streams of evacuees boarding ships, armies of Ohm engaged with GIA soldiers outside the shields, and forcefields that everyone hoped would hold out just a little bit longer.

The crew would be following Leon's orders but finding themselves fighting side-by-side with GIA platoons, full of various species that were currently all getting their asses kicked severely.

One of the Titans changed its focus to deal with Aibghalien while the other two shot away. Keeping itself moving just in case, it fired an array of beams to aim at each one of them simultaneously; not an overkill of them, but enough to test the waters and try to ward off the illusions.

The other two had turned quick enough when Zouichi pulled that maneuver, one trailing behind the other bu a small distance from its run-in with Jr. along the way. One of the Nightmare's beams hit the target dead-on, and it jerked back, a faint puff of smoke rising from its armor, but it didn't seem much more hindered than a delay. It sent back another huge psychic blast in retaliation.

That old trick. The magical armor surrounding him blunted but did not block the blast entirely; his images disintegrated, leaving the wizard along with a smoking, charred area scooped out of one leg.

He ignored it, yanking free a long rod from his belt to call upon the magical enhancements lying within it. Rather than point a finger, he aimed with the rod.

"Maximized Disintegrate (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/disintegrate.htm)."

The bolt of green light that raced from the wand's end, boosted to its absolute maximum power, leapt for the Titan like devouring death. Without looking, Aibghalien snapped his other hand sidelong to point at whichever other foes seemed to be the least-wounded Titan, as a crystal shattered beside him, its power spent in a heartbeat. "Quickened Flesh to Stone (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/fleshToStone.htm)."

He very much hoped there were no more massive foes waiting in the wings.

Sigh. They should really have equipped the VF with more destructive weaponry. Maybe if they actually destroyed one of these things, they could have the body taken back for material analysis. Zouichi pushed the Nightmare hard, shifting back into fighter mode to pull himself out free-fall.

The psychic blast only clipped one of the wings, but the force was devastating enough to send the VF reeling in the air. He gripped the controls, attempting to right the Nightmare if he could without the added benefit of oh, having two intact wings.

He was close enough, but now had to make sure he had the right moment to do it. He could see the faint trail of smoke from Aibghalien's injury, and Zouichi's mech spinning mid-air. Another shot of the bazooka, and another fire of missiles and Jr. was quick to move. The same moment the missiles left the E.S., Jr. focused not on the battle around him, but himself. Normal Ethers he was used to casting. But to bring forth something powerful, one had to focus all the more harder on it. Jr. channeled as much energy as he could in that short moment before he cried out, "Erde Kaiser!"

Four balls of light, large and orange like giant fireballs in the sky circled, faster and faster as they grew until they blurred together in one, thick circular shape. With a blinding flash of light, it materialized in the air, just as large as the Asher, though it was easy enough to tell that the two mechs definitely weren't designed or built by the same people. The Erde Kaiser looked more like something out of a Power Rangers episode, red trimmed with yellow and black and fierce and powerful-looking all at the same time. Three bladed wings were spread out on each side, and points of green light rested on its shoulders, its forehead, and its chest, for on its chest was the shape of a beast's head. Glowing green eyes, golden horns and a red snout, mouth opened and sparking as the machine reacted as it was called to do. And it couldn't have come at a better time, because Jr. regained his focus once Erde was summoned, but it had been a moment too late. A psychic blast, fired in hopes that the boy's pause would be as costly one, hit it's target, the Asher jerking back and flipping once in mid-air from the impact of the hit. And it was about to face another crushing blow from the incoming Titan's claw.

But it was right then that Erde attacked. In it's hand, it held a massive sword that glowed when its chest built up that energy, the sparks growing to dangerous sizes until they seemed to consume the full of the mech. The sword emanated a bright purple energy, and then it struck, shockwaves from the attack spreading out in all directions. The Titan, mere feet from the Asher felt the gigantic blade plow into it and went flying. But it wasn't down for the count yet, though clearly, and finally, weakened.

Once Jr. and the Asher both recollected themselves (again. Jr. cursed to himself, but he was thankful he was used to it and that the Asher could take some punishment), he set his sights on the Titan that Erde hit just as the summoned mecha in question disappeared as quickly as it had materialized into existence. A short-lived visit, the price to pay for an attack like the one it had dished out. Jr. wasn't going to take the chance to let that weakened Titan somehow escape or regenerate. A swift hand floated over the controls, and a faint dark aura surrounded the Asher as Jr. unlocked the E.S.'s Anima power. One of the mechs power sources (out of two, the other being the same power generator that the Erde Kaiser had) was a Vessel of Anima - something beyond a simple technological power source. And with it response time between pilot and mech was virtually non-existent, power and speed both heightened greatly. But much like the Erde Kaiser, the time-frame of this endeavor was limited, so Jr. made sure to make it count.

Dropping its Sting Ray, another weapon appeared on its right arm. It somewhat resembled the dropped weapon, only larger, and this one held a hell of a lot more power within, sharp beams thinner, but emanating a much greater deal of energy. The Asher moved like a flash, hurtling itself toward the Titan and jamming the end of the weapon straight into it's torso. The entire weapon shook, huge blasts of energy exploding from the end of it and straight into the Ohm. Finally the Titan fell, bringing the Ohm count down to two.

After the energy let out from the attack was used, that dark glow disappeared from around the Asher. With both Erde Kaiser and its Anima power used, it was now up to Zouichi and Aibghalien to have tricks up their sleeves to deal with the last two. Turning the Asher around and launching right back toward his allies, Jr. was going to help them do as much with the power he still had from the E.S.'s normal arsenal.

The two Titans that remained still had a load of fight in them. Aibghalien's attack had hit one of their shield arms and gotten a positive response out of it. Of course, it being the arm specifically made to be stronger for protection against such attacks implied that hitting a weaker area would have a better reaction. The Titans weren't keen on letting that happen, though. However Aibghalien would notice that well enough when his stronger Disintegrate attack was also warded off by the Ohm's quick movement. But this time, the damage on it was stronger, and the Titan was now enraged by the attack, its arm twitching slightly as it charged for the wizard head-on, though not recklessly so. Sending a huge amount of beamshots, both small and huge and charged and strong ahead of it, the Titan readied its offensive clawed arm to strike him.

Aibghalien's second attack hit the other Titan bound for Zouichi. But there was only a moment's pause. It seemed to lock up momentarily, but not completely turn to stone. As if it was physically fighting against the magic, its limbs snapped out, stretching in all directions to free itself from any further effects. So Zouichi would be free enough to straighten his Nightmare after the hit, but not much more than that as the Titan moved to take out more than a wing the next time around.

Of course the damn thing would have a high Fort save.

But the upside at last! He had maneuvered between the Titans for one very good reason, when otherwise it was a tactically terrible place to be. "Dimension Door!" The wizard disappeared from that onslaught -- leaving the beamspam to pass through the space he'd occupied and towards the other Titan behind him.

Aibghalien, meanwhile, reappeared behind it, already lifting his hands to produce another -- "Fireball!"

Hmm. Guess all these warning lights meant trouble. It was getting awfully hard to maneuver, too, especially without the correct counterbalance provided by two intact wings and a sky that was not full of laser beams. Zouichi made his decision and headed straight for the more damaged of the two Titans, no longer bothering to dodge beyond what was absolutely necessary.

In fact, he used this brief window of time to fire everything. A blaze of cannon, rocket, and missile fire swam forth from the VF as it dove, exhausting what armaments the fighter still had in reserve as he drove one last projectile -- the plane itself, straight at the Titan. He hit the eject button in the last few instants before the VF struck the Titan...

...and then the fighter exploded, sending smoke and debris flying.

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The Asher took a swing at one the Titans with its Sting Ray, but the Ohm was quick to veer to the side and dodge it. And just as that happened, Jr. heard the explosion behind him. The mecha spun in mid-air with the force that it had let out its attempted attack to face it, and all Jr. saw from his angle was the Titan Zouichi hit being pushed back and the explosion that caused it to do so - the debris and smoke pretty much indistinguishable from anything else ejecting or flying away from the destroyed fighter.

With no way to know who hit who and what the hell caused it, the fact that the Nightmare exploded with no warning beforehand made Jr.'s eyes go wide.

"Zouichi!"

There was no time for anything more than that. A Shrike nearby nailed a blast to the back of the Asher, and Jr. cursed for more than just the hit, gritting his teeth and turning back on the assailant to fire his Tempest at it.

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The Titan the Nightmare sacrificed itself for went flying back, hit pretty hard by the close ranged explosion on top of the hits blasted into it straight beforehand. But it wasn't done for, not yet. It was visibly injured after the fact, but injuries didn't do too much for the Ohm's determination to continue.

The second Titan's arm went up - it's right, and took the brunt of the fireball. But it did nothing in response when it turned back to Aibghalien. It was the other Ohm that acted from a small distance away, far away enough from the Asher and no longer paying mind to the destroyed Nightmare. The blast of energy it shot toward Aibghalien was bigger, faster, more powerful, made as such from the other Titan that had used that moment to loan its own psychic energy to it.

The beam slammed not into the elf, but into a massive semi-humanoid wall of stone that lurched out of the ground to intercept it. The earth elemental crumbled around it, the summoning magics returning it to the Elemental Plane of Earth as its vitality on the Prime Material failed.

"About time you guys got here," Aibghalien said, as the celestial triceratops charged in towards the motionless Titan, horns lowered to gore.

The elf himself held off on an attack, waiting to see what response the Titans would have to his summoned creature.

From within the cloud of smoke and debris, Zouichi used the thrusters of his EX-GEAR suit to bring himself to an even keel midair. In his hands he held a long, silvery rifle with a rectangular barrel, fully extended now that he no longer had to worry about keeping the Nightmare's cockpit clear. He leveled the gun at the wounded Titan's head and chest, switching shells for maximum armor penetration; now that it had turned its back on him, he should have a nice, clean shot.

He'd once used this gun to shoot down nuclear ICBMs as they began re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. So this, he reasoned, should be interesting.

He fired.

Zouichi wasn't dead. Phew. Jr. let out a relieved huff of air, that added weight swept from his shoulders as quickly as it had dropped onto them. But the danger still loomed above them all, and Jr. rolled his shoulders to try and counter that growing cold from the bomb. The ground wouldn't be safe for any of those on-foot soon enough - he wondered quickly if the Ohm were balanced enough to hold their own on an icy ground. But right now he had to worry about making sure the Asher stayed up for just those reasons.

Aibghalien seemed to have a good counter to that, as Jr. turned to see the huge wall rise up from the ground. Definitely not as strange as the triceratops, which made Jr. let out a quick scoff of a laugh. "Nice," he spoke through the external communication line as his mech prepared its pile bunker to once again charge in toward one of the Titans.

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-22 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The Titan was quick to realize that it had more to deal with aside from Aibghalien himself. After lending its partner the extra power, it moved again, backing away from the magical creature. It seemed to know this wasn't its intended target, not the one it should be going after. The Ohm circled around it, building speed and sending a few psychic blasts toward the triceratops and turning back to Aibghalien, saving the heavier attack from him. Its arm changed, materializing into a huge blade as it dived toward him, swinging the huge weapon wildly.

The second Titan didn't fare so well. It moved, but not fast enough from the EX-GEAR. Its clawed arm was blown clear off, leaving it with only its defensive one and its psychic energy. And the Ohm's side where the arm had just been was charred. But it didn't retreat or hesitate. It simply lifted its shield-arm, ready to protect itself as it mirrored its partner, a psychic blade materializing over it, huge and powerful and quick. It made a bee-like to the EX-GEAR, stabbing its blade straight forward to, just as Zouichi had just done, aim for his chest.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-24 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Storm of Fire and Ice!" Aibghalien snapped, both arms descending. On magical cue, massive bursts of hail and fireballs burst out of the ground and the sky to form a cylinder around the Titan. The spell served a dual purpose -- not only damage, but in blinding the creature and leaving it unable to adequately target the wizard.

If it were a conventional blade, Zouichi might have very well just allowed himself to be stabbed so he could get a good bead on the thing without it trying to dodge on him. But psychic swords were just bad news. He hit a single button on the device at his wrist before veering off, attempting to get Aibghalien's spell column between him and his pursuer. He wheeled about sharply, firing a second shot directly at the Titan Aibghalien was aiming at. Might as well take the shot while he had it.
