"Now I'm curious what Marco has said about me. My daughter told me about the way he treated her, when he only thought her to be my niece. The fact that she was related to me was enough for him to be rude and scare her enough to leave. That issue isn't important at the moment, though, or what you came to discuss with me," Kang quirked an eyebrow ridge. He was clearly not happy about that particular incident.
"I'm going to be very honest with you, as a former military officer. I don't believe in lying to the people that I am supposed to protect. There is a chain of command on this ship, that all of us have to obey. You may have heard already, but for many of our missions, we have no choice of who goes; Stacy decides for us. If we refuse, she can give us violations, and believe me, you don't want to get too many of them. There is a video of what Punishment entails available on the ship's records." Kang paused for a moment. "It's also important for you to realize that your group is only five people, in a crew of nearly three hundred, and millions more in the pods. This is bigger than the yeerks, and your version of Earth. This is the entire omniverse.
"By no means am I saying that I expect you to completely trust everyone on this ship; I'd recommend against it, to be frank. However, we're all stuck in the same situation, and the only way we're going to stand a chance of winning this and getting our worlds restored is if we work together.
"I'm not a part of Command. I'm a Councilor, and our job is to take care of civilian matters; that particular issue should be brought up with them. I can tell you that I do occasionally get assigned as a team leader because of my military history, though. And, no one in Command is in the habit of needlessly risking the lives of the crew. I'm certainly not. I like having my people alive."
Of course, that would be brought up. He snorted softly. "I didn't plan on it. No one should be forced to reveal a secret if it causes others no harm. The only reason I gave up those two was because they had become a danger. I didn't want to; however, I have a duty to protect this crew. The entire crew. As far as I know, no one else has any reason to dig for information on the rest of you, and frankly, if anyone ever does, you've made it far too easy for them to suspect by living in the same house and sticking to your group so closely. It didn't take me long to piece things together after I found out about Marco." That was a friendly warning. "If I ever hear of anyone digging, I will let you know."
He never raised his voice, and kept his tone neutral, diplomatic and polite. He was just telling things as they were, and trusting that Jake was as intelligent a leader as he'd been led to believe.
