trans_9 | "Listening to others, considering well what they say" (Part 3: Maingate Hotel)

The Maingate Hotel was pretty extravagant, and an entire section of it had been eked out for the crew's use during their stay. They had several suites, three communal areas, a conference room, their own kitchen with a chef on call if they required her.

They were all teleported from the main teleport pad of the hotel into the conference room, which was a large enough room to be able to hold a group their size and had plenty of chairs arranged in a circular pattern so they could mostly all face each other or whoever was in the middle of the room.

Everyone had to settle down so they were all able to talk, and the meeting itself would have to be carefully controlled so they wouldn't all talk over each other. But they were up for the task, right?

"What are you asking me for!? You know I don't have any friends. A demon as powerful as I am only has potential rivals and people beneath consideration!"

He paused.

"And disciples."

Another pause.

"And other people I only tolerate because I'm a freaking book and can't just go stomp the Ohm into the ground myself!"

One more pause.

"But no friends!"

Hit Girl snickered. "Well, can't argue with that. Well actually, I can, but that would probably just piss you off, but ya know, I've seen you deal with people who aren't just stepping stones. What do you call them?"

Hey, he can deny it all he wants, even Hit girl understood WHY. He had a rep to maintain, didn't he? If most people on the ship were too stupid to get past the whole "demon" part, let them think he was nothing but evil. It only proved to her that most people were fucking morons, and probably NEEDED an Overlord to make them do what was necessary to begin with!

Hit Girl underestimated the power of his denial. He believed everything he said, as far deep as his conscious mind went.

"Wait, who the hell are you talking about?"

"Lash for one, and the water chick for another," Mindy said, shrugging. "I do have eyes, and I am known for being covert. They're obviously friends, right?"

"Kaya's a competent fighter and leader who just keeps getting kicked!" Zetta snapped. "And then I have to go make sure she can still fight and lead and all that crap! That's all that is. It keeps her going so she can help out with the whole beat-the-Ohm thing!"

Right? He glared at her till he figured she'd realized that was the whole and unquestioned truth, then continued. "Lash is sort of like an Overlord, in some ways."

"Getting kicked? What are you talking about? Somebody;s beating her up or something?"

She thought a moment. Lash, an Overlord? Well she did boast a lot, and she did have the laugh...

"Actually yeah, I totally see it now."

"Between losing a guy, and then not being who she thought was her, and losing another friend, and... yeah, this whole mess seems to have it out for her. Some people just aren't lucky." Sorry, Kaya.

"And Lash has an appreciation for the fine art of beating up and blowing up stuff that even demons should envy. Plus good experience in tactics."

"That is a lot of shit to deal with," Hit girl said, especially when you're all emotionally invested like she is. I've met and talked with her and her Outsider guys. She can't turn it off, all those emotions of hers. They're bound to mess with her insides. If Ruffnut was podded, I'd.."

She trailed off. Huh. Now that she thought about it, it was a pretty crappy thought to think about.

"Well, there's a lesson about soft emotions like that being weakness. If Ruffnut got herself podded, you and I would just focus on kicking the ass of the things responsible for her being on the ship in the first place! Right?!"

Anger is the only acceptable, admittable emotion in that sort of circumstance.

"Course I would," Hit Girl said, though there was an unspoken feeling of uneasy, losing the one really close friend she had here. If something like that happened, she really WOULD go off and out to kick the ass of whatever took Ruffnut.

She know exactly what he meant in that reaction.

"There you go. None of this wasting time, moping around. The strength of an Overlord is to keep going and stay focused, no matter what!"

And if he lost a disciple, or Lash, or... well, it just wouldn't happen. He only surrounded himself with strong people. Too strong to go back into the pods.

"I don't mope," Hit girl said, and that was the end of that. She hadn't even done that when her dad had died: she put him to rest, closed his eyes. She barely cried. She knew when a thing had to be done, and that was all.

And she would never lose Ruffnut. That's all.

And that, in the end, was why Zetta ignored her heroic desires and motivations and taught her anyway. She had the dark half of a demon's heart.

"Man, this conversation sure got morbid," Zetta said after a moment. "Stupid ship! Stop making me think about things when I'm not even on you!"

Oh, she knew that, just as she knew the reason why she didn't get a psychiatric evaluation: the results would have been too alarming. She didn't need the headache of trying to convince people she was normal when she knew she wasn't.

"Things are going to get more morbid in the future anyhow," Hit Girl said casually. "Might as well get used to thinking like that."

"Eh, not for us, we're not going anywhere. Besides, I already told you that if you or Ruffnut die, I'm freaking reincarnating you. My minions may not have a ton of mana power, but they have enough for that."

...hmm, he might want to have a word with Lash about these reincarnation plans. Just in case!

"That's true," Hit girl said, who had forgotten there was such a thing as reincarnation. It was comforting to hear, that she wouldn't be dying so easily anytime soon. All the same though, she at least wanted to stay alive as long as possible.

"I'll hang onto living as much as possible. I still have a lot more to do."

Whoa, hey, she could totally die. She just wouldn't be going to some stupidass afterlife or something.

"Damn straight you do."
