The Chancellor met with his milk-preservation associate, his equipment supplier, his strawberry supplier, and, finally, the girl who'd been promised the 'first' -- not counting the cut he'd given his associates, including the entire quart certain milk preservation associates may or may not have eaten in one sitting -- serving of ice cream.

He pauses, but he does clutch the ice cream closer to him while he considers. He finally puts the spoon down and gives the ice cream back, looking anxious. "Yeah. You're right."

He chews the corner of his mouth. "So, how's Spacey Stacy been treating you?"

"Well enough. The animals are doing well, and this project has turned out properly. Cheese will be more difficult. I do not have any rennet. My other endeavours are gradually progressing."

"What the hell's a rennet?" Cheese would definitely be a good thing to have.

"A prime ingredient in cheese. The English used to take it from the shredded stomach of a young calf, but other options are from thistles, soybeans.... Dr. Yardley once guessed that rennet could be made from acids, but since the empire was synthesizing it by that point, we never bothered."
