Open (Council) House [Open to every single person here!]

Despite Superman's suddenly odd penchant for sporting mullets, it was time to have a heart-to-heart chat... between the Council and the rest of the crew. If there was some sort of bond between them and the crew that needed to be made, it needed to be done without hiding behind Omnicomms and other decisions.

Thus, the Council was gathered within La Prefecture and everyone was welcome to come in and make their concerns, questions, complaints and what have you known. Care to join us?

(OoC: This is open to everybody and everyone! Also, don't wait for the Council to address you guys! If your characters have concerns, start up a subthread and we'll gladly tag it!)

"There's one problem with that," Zam chimed up, arms crossed. "Say I'm the first security member on hand for some kind of problem, someone's head getting whammied with somethin'. I could probably handle it, but I don't have any special powers--I'm not meta. I know how to drop meta-level threats and restrain them through lots of hard work, practice, and most importantly of all--prep time. Before the fact. Why's my life worth less than someone else's privacy? In case everyone hasn't noticed, we're in a war here. We gotta be prepared for every contingency, and that includes mind control and other ways we could be turned against each other."

"But, we can't!" Another voice chimed up, this time of Sasami. Standing up on her chair so she can be seen, she continued. "People on this ship are always coming and going. I know so because I greet some of them when they arrive. What you may know now, you probably won't be able to use later."

She took a deep breath before continuing. "There's also things on this ship we don't know about. I mean... i-if we knew KAIN was on board the ship when he tried to kill me, things would have been different. People I care about wouldn't of been hurt. I wouldn't of put them in danger because I was here. We can't prepare for everything, but... at the very least, we should be prepared for what we know and contain."

"Besides, you're forgetting something important with all this other stuff," chimed up Hiccup, to Zam. "So was--" He waved vaguely in the direction Zoichi went. "--that guy. Who apparently didn't think his argument was worth enough to even stay around and defend."

"Kang made an oath. A promise of secrecy. Maybe that doesn't mean anything for some of the people here, but in some places, someone's word is everything. If there's some rule the Council has to share things even if they promise not to, it just means people won't tell them things they need to know, and no one will know it when we might need someone to, someday. And if they promise not to tell and tell anyway, that's lying and how can we trust them then?"

His rebuttal was partly personal due to his loyalty to Kang, but mostly, he could hardly believe anyone could be saying Kang should have broken a promise.

"Kang did the right thing. He kept it secret just like he promised, and only broke that promise when there was possible risk to the people involved and the crew. He knew when to speak and when not to. It's good to have leaders we can trust like that--that we can trust to keep our secrets but who won't let us keep those secrets to the point of hurting ourselves or other people."

"There is something to be said for the needs of the many over the needs of the few, however," Ildraniath spoke up. "Threats to all of us should be made public knowledge or at least allow security to be informed, at the very least. Not everyone has to know, but enough people should that there are redundancies and that the loss of a one or two key persons will not see our defenses annihilated in the face of some internal problem."

She folded her hands together, thinking. "We were fortunate that no one died in this incident. However, I agree with Zouichi - we should not force anyone to give up their information. However, people should be aware that if they give it up voluntarily that it will most likely be shared with others in the command hierarchy in order to ensure the safety of all involved. I understand that fear. I am a minority here and I do not trust easily. However, as has been said to me many times over the last few weeks, we need to work together and not at cross-purposes or we will all perish."

"There's also something to be said for human nature. Or...sentient...person nature. If people know it will be shared, they might not share at all, and then no one will know in these situations."

Hiccup went on, "We were fortunate no one died, and I say that very enthusiastically as someone that almost got his face clawed off by one of them. I'm glad Kang knew rather than no one at all, the latter of which probably will be the case in the future if there's some rule that the Councilors have to share it. Let's be practical here: we don't have a choice between only one person knowing and having it so lots of people know. What we have is a choice between only one person knowing these things versus no one knowing at all because people will know the rules and choose to stay tight-lipped."

"If you have a problem with the current Security training, please bring it up at the next department meeting." Nightwing had been standing unobtrusively against the wall, trying to blend in and NOT be noticed. Now he straightened, looking to Zam before turning his attention to everybody else. "Our training is why we have Security in the first place. There are training sessions for anybody who wants to know how to fight just as a matter of course. And last I heard, there's a telepath who has been offering classes in how to defend against mental attacks."

Though the telepath wasn't all that good at advertising, as far as Nightwing knew.

"We're not going to know everything that we have to go up against." Nightwing looked around. "The key is to be adaptable, so that you don't HAVE to know everything before you go into a situation. So that you can think on your feet and deal with things as they come.

"If you've looked at what the crew has dealt with before now, you'd realize that we've been in far more danger from forces outside the actual crew than from within."

"I have no qualms with security training or the Security department. I'm simply worried about redundancies and the extent to which I am expected to trust this crew if I know they're actively keeping secrets from me which may get myself or others killed. I have been told that we must work together, put aside old fears and worries and become a cohesive unit. The idea of keeping secrets from one another does not strike me as being a strong argument for cohesive training or conducive to strong ties between us."

She waved a hand in the vague direction of the ceiling. "You may say we are in more danger from external forces, but from what I have heard, we have had numerous incidents of internal strife, at least three incidents that involved crew actively fighting one another with intent to kill or injure, not counting the little event that brought this on. There is no such thing as being one hundred per cent effective, of course, but sharing pertinent information seems that it would go a long way toward bringing a degree of safety and security to the crew. It becomes an exercise in trust - if you cannot trust me with something that may end up killing me, why should I trust any of you to lead me or to otherwise work alongside me without sticking a knife in my back?"
