Return to Life [Open]

Mai hadn't been able to keep track fo time, running those stupid mazes. It might have been minutes, for all she knew. It could've been hours or days. Really, it'd been months - she just hadn't realized it yet. She'd been spat out in a corridor somewhere and after brushing some stray muck off of her, she'd gone off to see the ship - a stop at the observation deck, a bit to eat (the food was boring, but at least it was food), and finally down to the city to see if she could find anyone.

Not that she really cared, but it was still nice to know what was going on or where she might be able to find her boyfriend.

Marco had been heading back home after another round of running surveillance on Celena when he spotted Mai.

"Hi!" he said as he sidled up to her. "Are you a parking ticket? Cause you have fine written all over you."

Mai paused, hands folded into the rather large sweatshirt she'd managed to apprehend the last time the crew had gotten their hands on real clothes. In fact, she was wearing mostly baggy clothing. They weren't robes, but they'd do. She slowly arched a brow.

"...what's a parking ticket?" She glanced down at herself. "And there's nothing written on me."

Oh man - seriously? That was a good one! Marco repressed a sigh.

"Roughly translated, it means 'you're hot'."

Oh. Well, that explained a lot.

"I'm not interested."

"But I'm cute and smart funny and everything!" Marco whined.

This was so much easier when he was famous. (Why did you have to destroy his fangirls, Ohm? Why?)

Mai gave Marco a very long, very cold stare. "You're not cute, I don't care if you're funny... and I don't even know where to start with 'everything'."

Marco sighed dramatically. "Why are all the hot girls mean?" he said. "Excuse me, I need to take a moment to wallow in misery now."

"You'll live," came the monotone reply. "But have fun with that."

Katara had actually been exploring around the city for a few hours: it was one of the few exercises she allowed herself that didn't involve tons of physical activity, just a night, quiet stroll. Coming to the city tended to bring back memories when she passed certain places though, and at these times she tended to linger there. Near where the Nightmare King's place was, she just stared, barely believing how much time had past since then.

So imagine her surprise when, walking a little further, she sees someone that she knows.

"Mai? Mai?! You're here! They brought you back!" She runs over to approach Mai, then stops before she could grab Mai into a hug.

It was still Mai, after all.

"Um, what's the last thing you remember?"

"...I don't know. I don't keep track of what goes on aboard this stupid ship."

Which is entirely true. Mai doesn't follow the politics, the events, or much of anything else unless it directly impacts her or Zuko. She arched a brow at Katara, her face it's usual impassive mask. "...why?"

Katara made a face, Why? "In case you wanted me to fill you in on what's happened. You've been out for awhile, so I figured you might want to know. Zuko's been gone only a little less than you though, he was recently brought back. In fact, you, Sokka and Zuko all wound up being unpodded at the same time. I wonder why."

That made her a little wary. What did that mean anyway?

"But Zuko remembers more now: everything me and Sokka experienced with him, he knows now. He remembers what happened with Azula."

"...what happened with Azula?"

Sorry, Mai still doesn't know. She folds her hands into her sleeves, waiting for a reply. Had Azula shown up? Or was this something that was supposed to have happened on their destroyed homeworld?

Uh oh. She really though she'd told Mai about this. Well, she wasn't going to lie about it now, no point.

"She was going to become firelord, the day Sozen's comet was to come. By then Zuko had joined us to fight his father and his plan to wipe out most of the Earth Kingdom. He and I went to challenge Azula's coronation, and they fought in and Agni Kai. They were pretty evenly matched then, Zuko had attained the secrets of firebending and had gotten stronger. So she shot lightning at me so Zuko would intercept. We fought, and I beat her. I was able to heal Zuko in time. Azula...she went crazy after that. She had this scary look on her face, and she was crying."

Not her favorite memory, not by a long shot. With all the horrible things the ship did, she was happy Azula showing up hadn't been one of them.

"And that was when Zuko became Firelord."

"...oh."

Mai's face remained impassive as always; almost bored, really. Azula had been her friend. Hadn't she? And apparently she want crazy. Crazier. Things had been a bit strained, but she never thought Azula could ever break down. She was Azula, after all.

"...yay us."

Oh, Katara had always thought Azula was crazy, but more crazy like her father, for power and hurting people. That break down of Azula's had been an eye opener, and she regretted seeing it- hating Azula had been easier when she hardly acted human.

"He ushered in an era of peace for the Fire Nation and reconciled with Aang, so definitely yay us," Katara said. Her favorite memory was that one after the war, when she and Sokka and Toph were at Iroh's tea shop with Mai and Zuko and Suki, and they were all laughing at Sokka's horrible drawing. Then she and Aang left and...

She closed her eyes a moment, taking slow breaths. "So yeah, Zuko is definitely here, and he'll be pretty happy to see you!"

"Fantastic," Mai paused for a moment, glancing down the street. "...where is he?"

Katara was okay. She didn't mind her. But she wasn't one of the people Mai opened up to. In fact, the only person she really opened up to was Zuko. And maybe Ty Lee. She waited patiently for her answer, silent and impassive as always.

And that was a good question, really. Katara thought about it a moment. Where had she seen Zuko lately?

"I've seen him around Ankor Wat, actually. Also, wherever you see this kid Hiccup, you should see Zuko. You can't miss Hiccup: he has a meta leg. I think Zuko is training him or something."

"Thanks."

She actually meant it, too. Although you couldn't tell by her tone. She turned to orient herself - Ankor Wat had to be around here somewhere, right? Off she went.

"Sure," she said. Well, Mai was Mai, so she shouldn't be to surprised by her reaction.

"Um, its good to see you again, Mai!"

Yeah Katara, you don't look dumb at all, saying that to her back.
