Looking for the TARDIS [closed]
The hanger was a rather impressive space, filled with all sorts of ships of all sorts of sizes. Alex looked around slack-jawed. Of course he knew where it was, it wasn't so hard to find when you could call out the name of the place you wanted to go when using the anti-gravity transports.
Overwhelmed by the size of the place he looked to the Doctor with a nervous smile. "S-so, I g-guess we should just s-start looking?"
It seemed like a daunting challenge, to search through the whole place, but in the end at least it would be worth it. He would finally get to look at the real thing. "I c-can't wait to s-see what it really looks like. The s-sensoriums just aren't the s-same."

The Doctor wheeled around, whirling on his heel, and took in the sheer size of the hanger. It was quite big, if you were into severe understatement and not giving credit where credit was due. He, on the other hand, did like to give credit where it was due and it was due here. This was a very, very big hanger -- he said that with plenty experience with hangers. Several ships and different vehicles where already here, looming out of the shadows, the Doctor darting off toward one of the humanoid robots and leaving Alex to catch up or take his time. Shading his eyes, the Doctor craned his head, squinting. It didn’t take long for him to try a taste test (sorry about the Time Lord spit, whoever owned the Gundam).
Licking his fingers and rolling the strange taste on his tongue, the Doctor thought he could identify some components. Faint ozone, too, like there’d been a firefight at some point. The biggest thing was the other things he couldn’t identify. Not too surprising, given these big robots could be from another dimension. Entirely possible there were minerals and…other stuff there that didn’t exist in his universe, and -- he could be here all day at this, if there was even such thing as a civil day here. Probably artificially induced if there was. The Doctor had to tear himself away from the robots, as tempting as they were. TARDIS. Right. Moving on.
The Doctor went back to meandering around the hanger. The path he took was winding, veering off every now and then as he investigated the various ships docked. Well, “investigated”, “distracted”, “wandering off” –- whatever it could be called, the Doctor was having a good poke around.

"Doctor! Hey, Doctor!"
His path takes him right past the ship, but he ignores it, preferring to meet up with his friends instead. If Alex is there with the Doctor, he thinks, then possibly Kaylee's already noticed and met up with them. As he gets closer, though, he doesn't see any sign of her, which is a little disappointing. Oh well. He'll just have to look for her later. Right now, he wants to see what the Doctor's up to.
Jamie comes skidding to a stop by whichever ship it is the Doctor's peering at - amazingly only a little bit out of breath. Those breathing exercises he's been doing to strengthen his lungs after the smoke inhalation are working, and he's fairly pleased about that.
"What are ye down here for?"

He was doing his best to keep up with the Doctor when he heard Jamie's voice call out to the Doctor. He turned around on his heel and waved to Jamie, "H-hey! W-we're looking f-for the TARDIS! C-care to join us?"

The Doctor leads the way, as if Jamie and Alex have been there all along. It's not exactly the most straightforward way around with the Doctor in charge, but honestly, there are worse hikes out there: to begin with, they're not being chased, so he'd place this as one of the more leisurely hikes he's been on in quite awhile. Refreshing to be able to take his time and not have to sneak in a quick look before he has to dodge a disintegration beam. He's sure Jamie would probably appreciate it, or maybe he missed the good old days all those centuries ago. Speaking of good old days -- you know, that recorder has to be around here, somewhere. He thinks he saw it in the study last, but it's possible it could've moved around a bit since then.
The Doctor keeps up a brisk pace despite the hanger full of distractions, leaving Jamie and Alex to talk amongst themselves.
It's way, way, way at the back that he finds what he's looking for. The Doctor forgets all about the recorder.
And Alex. And Jamie.
Sorry to both the humans.
The Doctor just stops for a second, frozen, before a smile slowly spreads, his face lighting up.
The TARDIS sits in her own little corner, this splash of blue underneath a glowing flesh globule, nestled so neatly he thinks someone else might've parked her if he didn't know better. She's smack in the middle of her own spot, perfectly in the middle. Mathematically perfect, at a glance. The Doctor suddenly bursts into motion, heading right for the TARDIS. He goes in a circle around her, his hand reaching out to stroke that wood paneling here and there. His fingers run along the whorls, the straight edges. The Doctor suddenly seems to remember his two companions, turning toward them as he gives the TARDIS doors a fond pat.
"Much better than the sensoriums," the Doctor insists as he knocks on the old girl with his knuckles. "Shall we?"

As the Doctor starts to pick up the pace, Jamie glances over at Alex and nods his head over in the general direction of the Time Lord. "Here we go," he says dryly, before trudging off after him.
Jamie doesn't know how much in the way of hikes Alex got to go on with Five, but he is aware of how much wandering they're in for...and looks for all the world like he's resigned to it. Secretly, though, he's quite happy that he's getting to go on one again, even without the excitement of ducking laser beams or dodging terrible beasties.
He's even happier to see that familiar blue box, although he contents himself with tucking his thumbs behind his belt and watching the Doctor circle the time machine. It's not until the Doctor seems about to make a go at going inside that pessimism reasserts itself.
"I'd not get your hopes up, Doctor," he comments gloomily. "The last time we found the TARDIS, we couldn't get inside."
no subject
Alex really didn't take all to many hikes with his Doctor. They did a great deal of standing around the media library and doing programming things, and talking. There had not been very much to hike to or from. Alex probably would be in better shape now if they did more of this at least.
Finally he manages to catch up to the other two. Putting his hands on his knees he works on catching his breath, still smiling widely at both the Doctor and Jamie. He gives the Doctor a nod before looking to Jamie and heaving, "Wh-who knows, i-it might o-open this time." It might have been wishful thinking on his part though. He really wanted to see it and have the chance to explore it for himself.
no subject
"Here, I'll get it."
And with a grin, searching their faces for reactions, he snaps his fingers. The look on his face is shameless: on one hand, Alex's first look inside a real TARDIS and on the other, Jamie hasn't seen it for centuries and it might as well be new to him at this point. Had a bit of work done and then some. The doors both open with a click, opening inward slowly, almost like the time machine is inviting the two humans inside. A warm orange glow spills out. So much for a locked TARDIS. Imagine if they'd turned right around without even trying!
Flashing the two humans a smirk, the Doctor herds them both inside, flapping his hands at his companions as if he's shooing them.
Shouldering past Jamie, the Doctor takes a running hop up the stairs and begins to check the console. The time rotor is still, the Doctor reaching up with his sleeve to buff the glass column. It's a very poor attempt at looking busy while he pretends not to be watching his companions.

Watching the Doctor snap his fingers, the Scot begins to wonder if the man's gone daft - because there is is absolutely no way that is going to work. Of course, then the doors open, and his eyes widen rather impressively. He's stunned enough by it that he's quite obliging about being herded inside.
The Doctor is right about one thing - it's been so long that the entire thing is new to Jamie, and he stops dead just past the doorway, although there's enough room for the Doctor and Alex to get past. His eyes are even wider than they were before, and quite frankly, he's staring. It's...orange. Very, very orange. Slowly, he starts to walk towards the the stairs, his head practically whipping around as he tries to take everything in at once. It's almost unrecognizable, except for a few features like the rondels and the time rotor - and even those have changed so, so much.
Jamie doesn't know what to think, really. However, eventually he's able to pull his brain together enough to manage to get out a very important question. "What did ye do to it?"
no subject
Had he not been urged forward he would have moved anyway. He stepped inside, stopping next to Jamie, looking around. It was quite a bit different from the one Jamie had shown him. For one, it seemed quite a bit grander. The raised platform, all the wires, and the fancy floor all seemed to help that.
Alex took a moment longer than Jamie. He took a few steps around the lower level first, looking at the ceiling and beneath the upper platform before taking the stairs two at a time. He stood by the central terminal, hands hovering over the controls, just like they had when Jamie showed him the older version of the TARDIS's engine room. He pulls his hands back, trying to keep himself from touching anything since this is the real thing.
Finally he realizes that his mouth is still hanging open and closes it for a brief second before opening it again to say, "i-it's... gorgeous."

The Doctor gives up pretending like he's busy, rounding the other side of the console. That self-satisfied smug look? Not even trying to hide it, although he has time to shoot Jamie a half-wounded look.
"What's wrong with it? I like it, it's relaxing. And orange. Gold-ish," the Doctor says, turning to watch Alex make those hesitant motions like he wants to poke at the TARDIS controls. "Amazing, awe-inspiring: could go alphabetically but gorgeous works too. By the way, don't touch that lever, there's a good man."
Satisfied Alex won't accidentally send them who and when knows where, the Doctor throws himself into one of the chairs. The chair, lined with leather that somehow looks old despite it being rather new, squeaks under him, wobbling on its springs. Hooking his leg over his knee, the Doctor folds his hands in his lap, craning his head. He glances over his shoulder at Jamie.
Ah, still looking around. Probably shocked it's not blindingly white like before. That was fine and all when he was younger but the Doctor prefers it this way these days. Easier on the eyes, for one. Still, he might be slightly anxious, waiting for Jamie to finish inspecting the TARDIS. The Doctor lets them have a look around the console room as he settles into the chair. The chair squeaks and wobbles, glad to be of service.
no subject
And perhaps that's true, but his slow investigations finally take him up the stairs and to the vastly different console. His attention's drawn to it, a bit like a moth to a flame. So many big levers and buttons, and dials - none of which he recognizes now. But they're very, very interesting. "Hey, would ye look at that!"
Like so many times before, his finger reaches out as he makes an attempt to flip a particularly interesting looking thing. It's a bit like a toggle...he thinks.
At any rate, there's something curious that's sparked in the back of his eyes. This is good. It means he likes it. But if he's not stopped, he's likely to have a go at fiddling with everything within his reach.

"Doctor? Wh-what d-does that do? O-or this one?" His other hand was now hovering over a large green glowing button. Before he gave the Doctor a chance to answer he spots the phone and looks at it surprised. It looked like a perfectly normal wall phone, if a bit out-dated. "I-is that a phone? C-could you really g-get phone c-calls on it?"
Curiosity was one thing Alex was not lacking, at least.
no subject
"It's a brake," the Doctor calls out from his seat. Since they're not going anywhere in time, space, or both, he's not too fussed about that one being pulled. He does get up when Alex points out the phone, not because it's particularly dangerous, "Why wouldn't I? People can't go shouting into the Time Vortex. Rather past the tin cans on a string stage, I'd like to think."
The Doctor takes the phone off the cradle. It's thin, light, and covered in minute scratches from use. He listens to it. No, nothing. Doesn't seem like the phone can reach across dimensions to...wherever they actually are now in the Bleed. The Doctor tosses the phone to whoever wants to take a look at it, turning around inspect the console's gyroscopic stabilizer with a finger. Jamie makes orange sound like he liked the white better, although he supposes he shouldn't be surprised. Humans aren't exactly known for being big on change. Not at first, at any rate.
At least Jamie has the sense to want to investigate the TARDIS with Alex.
The Doctor busies himself by ducking down on his knees under the console, checking the wiring.
no subject
The fact that the Doctor's letting him explore at least a little is helping. Not that it would deter him much if his hands had been slapped away, but it would be a more passive experience while he contented himself with looking over shoulders instead. Jamie realizes that he's actually enjoying himself, and his mouth curls into a rather lopsided smile.
Those same years spent in the TARDIS mean he's also used to things being seemingly randomly thrown at him and those old reflexes kick in just in time to catch the phone. After a few seconds where he turns it over to take a look, he shrugs and hands it off to Alex. It's nice, but not really anything he's very interested in.
Jamie prefers some of the other things, like those yellow and red buttons just over there. Rubbing his hands together for a moment, he starts to reach for those as well, but then changes his mind and ducks his head down to address the Time Lord.
"What do these do, Doctor?"
no subject
The phone was something he had seen quite a few times before, but the rest of the ship was new and fascinating. Had he grown up in the suburbs, it very well might have been cars he learned how to take apart instead of computer code because of his curiosity, however the lack of experience with a TARDIS was not keeping him from wanting to learn all about how it worked.
no subject
"-- at a guess, it's probably the blinky red button that might be some sort of panic button (haven't tried it yet myself) and the yellow dial's completely new," the Doctor peers up at the underside of the console, reaching up and checking a wire.
He wants to say it's another stabilizer dial. Seems like they keep popping up on the TARDIS. Maybe she's trying to tell him something.
The Doctor frowns at that wire, twirling it between his fingers. It's not supposed to be hooked up there and he was sure it hadn't been like that when he'd last been under here. Reaching out, he unplugs it and passes it off to Jamie with a distracted "here, hold this", before slithering out from under the console to come face to face with Alex. The other human's looking at the time rotor, which has gone through its own changes. Currently it's trying on the blown-glass look.
"That, Alex, is the time rotor. Connected to the lower engine which..." the Doctor trails off, staring at the column, stroking his chin thoughtfully. He points at what looks like an innocent smudge. "That right there. Wasn't here last time, which means..."
The Doctor wheels and bounds toward a toolbox at the bottom of one of the stairs, leaving Alex standing near the console and Jamie with the wire. His voice trails up toward them.
"...shouldn't have gotten in, but the key..."
He might be there awhile. Talk amongst yourselves, humans.

He wanders over to one of the chairs - with springs, he notices, rather than four sturdy legs like before, and settles down, giving it an experimental bounce.
"Ye might as well sit, too. Unless ye would prefer to try and get out of his way while he's running around having a go at fixing things."
no subject
Hearing Jamie's offer he reluctantly pushed himself back from the console and found himself a chair, sitting on it cross-legged. "Y-you wouldn' happen ta know wh-what the lower engine d-does in relationship w-with the time rotor, do you?" He rather liked the sound of 'time rotor' though, whatever it exactly was that it does.

The Doctor disappears down one of the open doorways, only to come back a few minutes later trying to drag something after him. Keyword is "trying". The Doctor's legs scrabble at the floor as he pulls at something, the something inching forward. It's quite big and bulky and heavy, a big chest bound delicately with some unearthly crystal thing. It might've been pretty once. Now it's heavily scratched and covered in scuff marks, most likely from being kicked around forgotten inside the TARDIS. Mostly forgotten.
"It's," the Doctor grunts, still straining to drag that chest past the doorway. It'll be a small miracle getting it up the stairs, "not important right now, because I'm certain I told Jamie here to keep holding that wire. Give me a hand with this, will you?"
He gestures Alex over and somehow manages time to shoot Jamie a look reminding him there's still wire duty and it's Very Important. The Doctor seems more interested in figuring out why that wire is not where it should be than giving the tour. He could always direct Alex to the library later, anyway. He's not sure if the quick start manual is still floating around, but he could probably try to sniff it out. He'd been sure he'd turned it into a doorstop (or something) but the thing had a habit of coming back, like a bad penny.
no subject
Alex may want to take note of that face. People have been known to develop that face after traveling with the Doctor.
"I've got the wire, Doctor, don't worry."
He's fairly the Doctor will not worry at about it in the least, but he's complying now, and stands there holding the thing and trying not to look too terribly bored. There are some parts about spending time with the Doctor that Jamie does not miss at all.
"What are ye going to with that chest-thing, anyway?"
no subject
Nevertheless, he made his way over to the opposite side of the box and tried lifting once. He didn't manage to budge it. He pursed his lips and decided to challenge himself again. He drew on the very anxiety that the thought of using his powers brought to him and created two shadow tendrils, invisible to the Doctor and Jamie. With their and the Doctor's help he managed to actually lift it off the ground.
"Wh-what's in here? I-it's r-really heavy!"
no subject
The Doctor shoots a look over at Jamie, as if asking him if he's right or not. Nevermind the fact that one, Jamie's supposed to be dead, and two, even if he wasn't, he hasn't been on the TARDIS in several centuries, so he wouldn't know any more than the Doctor. The Doctor looks down at the box. He wants to say it's one of his old toolboxes. Stashed quite a few of them around. Bit like an Easter egg hunt, except instead of eggs, it's a tossup between highly flammable materials, dangerous tools from other planets or...or it could easily just be another box of books he meant to put in the library.
"Here. Jamie, don't drop that wire. Stand back the two of you. If it's radioactive, you might have to run," the Doctor says, crouching down by the chest and pulling out his new new sonic screwdriver.
He pauses to give the two humans a big grin over his shoulder.
no subject
"Aye, all right," he replies, in the tone of someone who is completely expecting it to be radioactive. He's not, not really. Given that grin, he's fairly sure the Doctor's having them on. Still, it's not a bad idea to stand well back - just in case something does go wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.
Shifting his grip on the wire so he's got the end of it, Jamie moves so he can put some distance between himself and the box while still managing to hold on at the same time. It's a good opportunity, he thinks, to try and needle the Time Lord juust a wee bit, and he flicks a glance at Alex to see if he'd be willing to play along.
"Do ye think ye can get that open without blowing us up this time, Doctor?"
Sorry about the late. Had a bad few nights, getting back on top of things.
He wasn't entirely sure if he should really be concerned, but somehow, he felt that whether or not the mystery box decided that it was going to explode, that everything would be all right. The Doctor was here.
no subject
He does, however, scoot backward a few inches as if that would make a difference.
The Doctor glances one more time over his shoulder to make sure Alex and Jamie are a decent distance back before he turns his attention back on the chest. For the life of him, he can't remember exactly where he got it. It's not within the last couple of regenerations. His memory isn't that bad, although it did get pretty shoddy a few faces back. Maybe it's from then?
Either way, the three of them are going to find out what's inside. The Doctor flourishes his sonic screwdriver, waving it at the lock of the chest. It's not where the lock would be ordinarily, instead off in the corner. Something beeps, the ancient mystery chest opening like a Chinese puzzle.
No explosions. Not even a little radiation. The Doctor leans forward to peer in.
"Oh," the Doctor huffs, almost sounding disappointed. He waves an all-clear at Jamie and Alex. "I was wondering where I put those."
no subject
He does get a little closer before a tug reminds him that right, Jamie's on wire duty, and he gives it a rather disgruntled look before calling over to the Doctor and Alex. Alex can go over and see what's in the chest, why can't he?
"Look, could I not let go of this now?"
no subject
Patting Jamie on the shoulder he nodded to the box. "A-Alice'll h-hold it, let's see wh-what the Doctor found."
no subject
"Wonder why I kept some of these," the Doctor says, put out. He scoots to the side in case Jamie and Alex want to kneel down next to him. Maybe he ought to go back to that wire and fiddle around with it. It's much more interesting to him than cleaning out that chest. "Here, you two. See if there's anything in there you find interesting."
The Doctor jumps to his feet, taking the wire from Alice with a prim "thank you!" and goes back to fiddling and twiddling.
no subject
Still, he starts poking through the chest's contents to see if there's anything worthwhile in there. Newspaper, newspaper, copy of 'Little Women', newspaper...
Jamie finds a slim volume sandwiched in between a first edition copy of 'Gulliver's Travels' (which, incidentally, results in him getting a very queer look on his face when he spots it) and a copy of 'On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres' by Copernicus. He pulls it out and looks at it.
"'Every Gallifreyan Child's Pop-Up Book of Nasty Creatures From Other Dimensions?' Why do ye have this, Doctor?"
no subject
Seeing what jamie found, Alex peered over Jamie's shoulder and smiled. "A ch-children's book?" He was having a very hard time imagining the Doctor as a little boy. So far he had already seen two different faces, of two different ages, and he knew Jamie knew another.
Alice climbed up the Doctor's arm as he too the wire and watched what he was doing, apparently fascinated.
