And We Won't Be Caught Again [open]

Somewhere on Stacy, a fleshy wall opened and ejected four people. Sherry turned and kicked the wall as it closed.

“I hope this isn’t another stupid test,” she grumbled and pushed her hair from her eyes.

“I don’t think it is, that... thing did thank us,” Namira patted the little girl’s shoulder. “So, I imagine that our testing is over, for the moment.”

[Not a moment too soon.] Nehaalista signed as she stalked off towards where she hoped the Hub was.

“I’ll take Sherry-chan back to her parents,” Miku offered. “I imagine they’re worried.” Especially if they only just realized their child had been missing for two weeks or so. Namira nodded and Sherry frowned. “With her permission, of course.” She looked back at the little girl, who seemed a bit annoyed that she was being talked over (so to speak, as she was nearly the same height as the petite Japanese girl).

“I can find my way on my own, but fine.” Sherry crossed her arms. “Can we get going? I don’t want GLaDOS to change her mind.”

“Absolutely. I have a mabari to find, myself. Goodbye, you two. I’m sure we’ll see one another soon.” Namira smiled and hurried off to care for Hakkar.

“Alright, Sherry-chan. I think it’s... this way,” Miku put her hand on Sherry’s shoulder and led her down the hallway.

The past few weeks Claire had the distinct feeling that something was very wrong, but it didn't really clear itself up for her until just now. She'd been in Hydroponics walking Boon when the thought and memory hit her again, and the anger brought with it. GLaDOS.

"Boon, c'mon!" she snapped sharply at the dog, turning and striding swiftly back to the main part of the ship. She didn't really know where she was headed, but made her loose destination her shared quarters with her daughter, who had been missing. Once she finds the little girl, next priority is breaking into the AI core again and bringing that bitch down for good.

Paco spotted the backs of two one-more familiar heads and broke into a jog.

"Miku! Sherry! How are my two favorite no-longer-missing girls?" he asked, clapping a hand (lightly) on Miku's shoulder and ruffling Sherry's hair.

Steve had been in the middle of watching a movie in the media library when it hit him. First it started as a vague thought that his mother used to like this movie (The Sound of Music.) And that he knew another person who would probably like it. Miku would. His girlfriend. Come to think of it, where was she? And where had she been for the last... two weeks?

So that's why Steve came racing down the hallway of the ship, in a mood about as foul as the language spewing out of him. Screw that bullshit about avia and souls falling out, whoever built that piece of shit AI was going to pay with their lives if he didn't find Miku right the hell now.

"Ah, here we are: the crew quarters." There hadn't been any hide nor hair of the Captain and his wife (not wife? Well, Leon hadn't corrected her way back then) so far, but Miku was sure that one of them would show up.

Er, somewhere.

They stopped in front of Sherry's shared room with her mother, and the little girl raced inside.

"Mom? Boon? I'm..." Sherry paused and turned back to Miku. "They're not here." She looked a little bit upset, but if the last couple of weeks had taught her anything it was that Miku seemed to worry way more when people seemed upset.

Better not to set her off then.

"I can wait here, I guess. Maybe she's with my dad?"

Sherry flailed at Paco's hand. "Stop iiiiiit," she groused. "I want to see my mom and dad in one piece, not all messed up!"

These things, Paco. Why do you do them?

"Hi, Pakkun," Miku was very pleased to see him (even if it wasn't Steve, whom she needed to see as soon as Sherry was safely off) and patted his hand in return. "I think I know what you mean about cake, now." She wrinkled her nose a little.

With Sherry safely seen off, Miku had started to look for Steve. She'd changed the skirt over her plantsuit (saddened to learn at somepoint during her... departure, the nightgown she'd worn when abducted had gone missing), and kept searching until her legs ached.

She didn't really like playing the Find Steve game, but she also didn't want him to throw a fit if she just waltzed back to her room to properly sleep. Miku looked down one end of a hallway as she stepped out and turned her head to see Steve stalking down the hall.

Well, let's be honest here; she heard him before she saw him. "Steve!"

"Miku!" Steve was on her in a second, running to her from down the hall and throwing his arms around her, nearly lifting her off the floor.

"Oh my god, oh my god, I'm so glad you're back! I was so worried! I thought you were gone for good! I'M GONNA KILL THAT GODDAMN PIECE OF SHIT AI!" he said, all in one breath.

"I'm here! It's okay, it's okay!" Miku clung to him and tried to think of how to keep him from hauling off and chewing a wall or something until GLaDOS revealed herself (itself? whatever). "I was really worried that you'd be gone when I got out."

Steve clung back, and it was apparent there were almost tears in his eyes. "Are you okay? You're not hurt, are you? Did she try to hurt you?"

Claire turned the corner then, dog on her heels. When she spotted Miku hovering outside the room brief confusion flashed across her face, before she heard Sherry's voice from inside, and as far as she was concerned, the Japanese girl was completely nonexistent for the moment.

"Sherry!" She sprinted the rest of the way to the room and inside, scooping the little girl up into a tight hug.

"Oh God, sweetie, are you okay?"

"No, she didn't. I'm fine." Down one nightgown, but fine. "It was just test after test after test." His eyes seemed kind of... shiny, like he was trying to man up and not cry. Miku felt a bit guilty about having made him worry so.

She pressed her face against his shoulder, "I never want to deal with her again."

He bit his lip. So far, he was the only one who had been really tortured by GLaDOS, and that was because some dumb bald son of a bitch was at the helm. It infuriated him, but he was glad that Miku hadn't been subject to the same think he had.

"You're not gonna. I don't care what the hell she's supposedly for, I'm gonna rip that stupid bitch out of the ship and set her on fire," he muttered. "I'm so sorry, I should have-- I should have tried to go in after you!"

"I'm okay!" Sherry assured Claire, clinging for dear life. "It was stupid, and she kept talking about cake and I hate cake and I missed you...!" She pulled back for a moment and her lip wibbled.

Miku, made herself as scarce as a shadow.

"How would you even known?" Miku asked. She was fairly sure that if that had been the case, Steve really would've chewed through the walls. "I think... I might have needed it, anyway. Because of..." Miku trailed off and sighed heavily.

Steve frowned, listening to her ramble. and he instantly knew what she meant. "Because of the ghost," he filled in, then got very quiet.

He tightened his arms around her. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"I am," Miku assured him and looked up at him, "I'm much better, I promise." Well, she probably needed a hug after spending two weeks thinking with portals, but he seemed to be taking care of that pretty well.

He was doing excellently at the hugging, that was for sure. "We should get you something to eat, or a nap, or something."

"I don't want to sleep yet, I just saw you, and I'm afraid I'm going to dream about those stupid portals." Miku replied, feeling a bit bitter. As thankful as she was that her avia hadn't decided to slough out of her and go finish her off in the now deceased BZ's spectral stomach.

"Let's do... something else. Anything else."

"You got it," he said. "Anything you want!"

"I don't know what... just, I have..." she seemed annoyed and a little embarrassed now. "I really want cake."

She took in the expression on Sherry's face when she pulled away and furrowed her brow, one hand coming up to gently smooth the little girl's hair down, before she leaned in and pressed a kiss to Sherry's forehead.

"I know, she's nuts. You're safe now, though." And she wasn't going to let that goddamn AI take her child again.

Sherry tried to still her lip wibble (she was failing), and nodded. She sighed deeply, and launched herself at Claire again, as if the physical presence of her mother would keep the walls from opening and the psychotic AI from dragging her back into the mazes.

After a few minutes, the little girl composed herself, and seeing Miku had slipped off, murmured, "I bet I'm behind in my classes."

Kang was only half paying attention to his surroundings as he was making his way to the tavern, just enough to not bump into anyone. He paused when he saw Nehaa, though; he hadn't seen her in a few days. Of course, he'd spent a while avoiding people after the mission and had only recently been trying to be more social, so it made sense to him that maybe she'd been doing the same.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to check on her.

"Nehaa. The mission on your mind, too?"
