Be ready boys, for hell is here.

Dean had stepped in to watch. Only for a moment, but it was enough to reach the depths where he had buried it all. And bring it to light. Just for a moment.

A moment enough to make him run outside, and bend over, puking up the remains of the slop from earlier. A unsteady hand briefly rose up to wipe the sick away from his lips as he stood up again. He didn't realize how much he was shaking, or how as he watched, he remembered Alastair's careful instructions. He didn't want to think how the demon would have approved, and felt it was an excellent demonstration.

And he really didn't want to think how he could have *improved* on it.

He stumbled his way along to the hangar, and fumbled with opening the car door to the Impala.

"Honey, I'm home," he gave a shaky half crazed laugh as his hand touched the familiar seats. He curled into the back, his knife and gun ready by him like a child's preferred teddy bear. He stayed like that through the night.

He weighed that for a moment, then nodded. If nothing else, it gave Dean something else to think about and concentrate on. "Yeah, probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Just to be certain. Even if we get Iniss." Because Iniss would know how Tom was doing, if nothing else.

"We'll just have to give him time to get used to being just Tom again, though." Sam would need some time, too, most likely. Hadn't been a Controller even half as long and he knew that it was going to be difficult.

Sam let out a breath. "With which part?" he asked. "Schmuz isn't so bad, end of the day. Not like it could have been." Not like what he'd heard from Tom about the first Yeerk he'd had. "But I know he's itching to be able to do more, to prove himself and I'm not compatible for that, so he gets kind of irritated about that.

"If you mean...what just happened?" He shook his head. "I don't even know."

Sam closed his eyes, leaning against the seat. "I don't remember the things that set you off, either," he pointed out. "What Ruby trained me to do? That was so far away from the stuff that Alistair could do..." What he, logically, knew Dean could do. But he trusted Dean implicitly. "When I saw how it was affecting you, I just...sort of shut off being able to hear her. What she was going through was awful, but there wasn't anything I could do about it. You became the important thing."

Which possibly didn't say anything good about Sam, he wasn't sure. But Dean was family. Big Zero was...well, he'd not talked to her, but from what he'd seen, it hadn't been nice. He'd pick his brother over here any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

It wasn't like it was something that made Sam proud, either. But he'd had ten months (six after the Mystery House, before Gabriel agreed to bring Dean back, and four after Dean went to Hell) to learn how to be a Hunter on his own. Sometimes, that meant compartmentalizing what he could do and what he couldn't.

Big Zero had fallen under what he couldn't. Dean had fallen under what he could.

He chuffed out a soft laugh, though there wasn't any mirth to it. "Yeah, well, Ruby thought she was hotter stuff than she actually was."

He couldn't help but smile. Probably shouldn't have, over all, but they'd got their own back. "Yeah, she did. She really didn't expect that at all." Of course, she'd made certain Sam couldn't have done it because he used up all his juice on Lilith and had no weapon that could stop Ruby. So he'd been lucky that Dean came after him.

He sobered after a moment. "She changed your message, you know. Made me think that...you'd washed your hands of it all." Of me.

Sam shrugged. "No idea. One of them. Ruby was there. Easier to blame, I suppose." Literally standing behind him when he'd had the phone to his ear.

Sam sighed as well. "Wouldn't surprise me. And since Michael would need your permission, there'd probably be some song and dance about how the only way to help me was to let him." Because both sides seemed to have way too good a handle on them.

Sam snorted and shook his head. "I have no idea. But you've just reminded me that I need to look into getting that amulet done." He had the symbol off of Cas. He just needed to get some silver and have somebody make it.

He nodded. "A gal named Pirogoeth." He had to sound that out, because it was not a name he knew. "She said that there's apparently plenty of protective magic on the ship for her to be able to make it."

"Honestly, at the moment, I'm willing to give just about anything a shot if it might make things easier on you." Still wasn't sure if the voice Dean was hearing was really Michael or all in his head, but the amulet would likely help no matter what.

He blinked at Dean, then snorted. "I would never." Mostly because Sam's not so keen on it himself. He was just resigned to the fact that he'd have to go. "And you're welcome, but you don't have to thank me. You'd do the same."

Sam from a few years ago probably would have been the one to frog march Dean down to Doc Samson, no matter what. This Sam had argued for going because it was mandatory and not complying would see Dean off security. Which he figured Dean needed.

He snorted. "Maybe I should have her make two, just in case." A pause, then, "Three. Cas should have one, too."

Gabriel could look after his own damned self.

"Yeah, I know." Sam shook his head. "I doubt three will be much harder on her than one. Especially since she said she'd have plenty of magic to work with." He squeezed his hand around Dean's forearm, not willing to let go while Dean needed an anchor.
