Mission 01 - Recovery: Group 5

Chief, Brainiac 5, Leela, Cale, Bri, Paco, Samus, and Allen took the fifth pod. The ground beneath their feet slowly became softer and more squishy, undoubtedly to the grave annoyance of those wearing armor. Marshland, perhaps? It was definitely something they should keep an eye on. Who knew if there was quicksand or something like it, and marshes were generally home to some not-so-pleasant creatures...

"I'm pretty fond of not taking a nap in an alien death-swamp, yeah," Paco said, attempting to swat the bugs buzzing around him. "How do we get rid of them?"

John's shields flare and flicker around him as the glows sap at them. He quickly considers a few options. He has a limited supply of plasma grenades, and though one might be able to distract the things for a few moments he's reluctant to waste what little he has.

But still, they have to try something.

"I have an idea. Going to throw a plasma grenade. They want energy? I'll give them something to chew on. They move off, we run."

Samus flicks at several of the bugs resting on her arm cannon. Please do not suck energy from Samus, little bugs. That's just not nice.

"Not a bad plan," was that encouragement on Samus' part? Oh my, "As long as everyone moves quick enough."

"...You're going to get rid of bugs with a grenade." Paco stared at Chief slack-jawed for a moment before throwing his hands in the air. "That is awesome!"

What? He and Jaime used alien lasers to dispose of old pizza boxes back home.

It'll be awesome if it works, and the Chief really hopes it will. Even if it does, though, it's only a temporary answer to the problem and the supply is very limited.

The Chief lobs the grenade, winging a spitting ball of bright blue plasma out into the marsh. It sticks on the side of a tree, bonding with the organic material. He's already moving off at a jog.

"I don't know if that'll draw them, either way we have to get out of here. Now."

"Hopefully it'll be enough of a lure to rid us of most of them," Brainiac 5 agrees. While at the moment the insect creatures aren't too much of a problem energy-wise, they are a source of irritation.

The moment the plasma grenade hits the tree he's moving as well, hoping that the plasma is enough to draw off most of the insects. Though unless Chief happens to have an unlimited supply, he's not sure what they'll do if - when - the creatures return.

We're running, and we're running. Though her suit lacked it's normal speed boost, Samus moved with surprising speed even while being dragged down by her suit. If she could run that quickly with the suit, how fast could she run without it?

In the meantime, Samus was sort of hopping that the plasma grenade would be the end to those annoying creatures, though things rarely worked out that well. She supposed blasts from her cannon could be used as a suitable means of providing energy and distracting the bugs, but she wasn't going to start an annoying regime of constant charging and shooting if she didn't have to.

Never let it be said that Paco couldn't run when he put his mind to it. But he wasn't used to running around in swamps, so he kept stumbling and falling behind the others. Which...wasn't something he wanted to do, no matter how awesome getting rid of bugs with a grenade was.

Wow okay, wow. Plasma detonations are NOT that big. Bits of debris rain down from the explosion, the Chief looks back over his shoulder briefly as he moves to see that the plasma grenade, instead of just detonating on its own, seems to have set off a bunch of the glows around it and leveled a significant section of the ground behind them. More glows have gathered to feed on the energy the explosion produced.

He opens a quick comm link to the rest of his team. It's quicker and clearer than voice.

"I'm okay," says Leela pushing off of the...somebody she fell on. The flash blinded her a little too much to see who.

Lucky Leela, that somebody just so happens to be the same 'five year-old' that she's been bickering with since the meeting.

"Ugh..." Cale groaned under the weight--slight as it was--of Leela's body on his chest. "Speak for yourself."

Goddammit.

"I just did speak for myself. "

She shoves herself off of him. Hard.

"I was right, that was awesome. Just wish I could have seen it."

Paco was a little singed and covered in swamp muck, but he was grinning at Chief as he sat up and wiped his eyes clear.

Brainiac 5 had been flying when the grenade exploded, but he'd managed to get a partial forcefield formed to shield himself from most of the effects. It didn't do anything about the shockwave though, which had picked him up and unceremoniously dumped him in a tree.

After some sotto voce noises that might have been muttered complaints about people using grenades without warning about effect sizes, he works himself free and lands in the muck next to Paco with a splash.

"I'm fine as well." Not happy about being covered in muck now, but fine.

"Plasma grenades don't usually do that. I threw it well beyond where it'd need to be normally. They did something to it," the Chief says. He may or may not be looking at Brainiac 5. It's kinda hard to tell with that helmet. He didn't really hear him, this is mostly because it really bothers the Chief that this happened and he didn't expect it.

"You can figure it out later. Let's move."

She really doesn't like those bugs.
