The Fallen Knight (Phase Three) [closed]
The streets of Religion Row were stained with bloody scorch marks, leading in a gruesome trail through the maze of temples and shrines. The stains seemed to lessen the further the trail was followed, and the last splotch of blood led to the steps of the Vatican.
The door of St. Peter's Cathedral had been knocked open and inside, the cavernous chapel seemed empty. This place still showed signs of the last battle here, the struggle against many of Veronica's relatives and the innocent people they had infected.
Deep within the chapel, he lurked.
His heavy footsteps were obvious, but the echo made it impossible to tell where he was. Heavy breathing, edged by growls, was audible from the somewhere in the darkness.
He heard them approaching, and he waited.

At least Steve had run somewhere fairly abandoned, and Claire couldn't help but wonder again if he was still in at least partial control. She threw Leon a glance when they stepped through the ruined doors, immediately able to tell Steve was around, but where was an entirely different story.
She paused to shift the Linear Launcher into a more accessible position, her hands finding the grips. If Steve decided to show himself, she'd need to be ready to shoot him.

It wasn't as if either of them wanted to do this.
He gripped his 9mm tighter, an odd choice for a weapon considering what they were hunting, but right now he needed the mounted flashlight more than he did the firepower. It lit up the darkness, and he swept it from left to right as he moved, occasionally checking high on the walls and the ceiling, looking for any signs of where Steve was hiding.

Sweeping the light around would eventually spot a flash of red eyes in the darkness up on a high ledge. It disappeared quickly, ducking back into the shadows, and the pounding of footsteps intensified.
There was suddenly a tremendous crash and a massive shape hit the ground not 20 yards in front of them. The Tyrant roared and began to slowly stalk towards them, pausing once he'd gotten close enough to see just what had come in after him.
And he didn't look especially pleased.

Claire let out a surprised gasp when Steve landed before them, and quickly squared the launcher away on her shoulder, but she didn't fire. Despite the chaos and destruction, she knew the cure was still being worked on, and she had to at least try one more time to get through to Steve, to save his life, before she was forced to end it.
"Steve! If you're still in there, you need to fight this! You need to stop!" Her finger was on the trigger, though, and if he got any closer, she knew she'd have to fire. Her own life she was willing to risk, but Leon's she wasn't.

He didn't need to say any more than that out loud. His tone was saying for him the words he couldn't. Take the damn shot.

He growled low in his throat and suddenly lowered his head. He paced like it was hard to hold still, keeping his eyes locked on the armed pair in front of him. Then he took a few steps backwards, and the growl changed to a heaving pant and his body seemed to start trembling.

"...Steve?"

He backed away further, shaking his head quickly like he was trying to throw something off-- the virus' control on him, or maybe the other way around? It was hard to tell. He punched the ground a few times and looked up at the pair again, staring at them hard.
He was clearly struggling about something.
A few seconds later he snarled again.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly, before bracing herself for the kickback and after the briefest hesitation, pulled the trigger.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city...
"I guess there aren't any homing beacons we can use to pinpoint where everyone's at," he said. "We'll have to do this the old-fashioned way." Jedi senses could give him a direction, which he figured was all they needed. Stretching out with his mind, Luke hesitated, then started off on a route that he thought would lead them by the Jedi Temple and the cathedral, then onward past those.
"Keep your eyes and ears peeled," he said to Miku. "Don't be afraid to take the lead if you see something. I've got your back."

"R...Right, I understand." Miku breathed and adjusted the gun again for what felt like the three hundredth time. It wouldn't do to be distracted.

Still as they approached the cathedral, Luke pulled his lightsaber off his belt, just in case. It never hurt to be prepared.
Glancing over, he saw Miku adjust her hold on the gun. "Want me to carry that for a little while?"

As the pair approached, they wouldn't notice the vines quickly whipping out along the path behind them until they had snagged both of them by the ankles and yanked them off their feet, towards the planter-- where a massive flower was slowly blooming, teeth and all.
Somehow it actually managed to look hungry. Or perhaps that was easy to figure out with how quickly it's pulling them in towards itself.

Miku tried to dig her heels in but it didn't quite seem to be working. "Get off!"
no subject
"Woah!"
Luke was stunned a moment, the sudden drop having knocked the breath out of him, but he recovered fast enough. His hands were still free, so he tightened his grip on his lightsaber and ignited it. With a snap-hiss, the brilliant green blade came to life, casting a reassuring glow. Using the Force as a guide, he sent the lightsaber flying, turning end over end, and slicing through the tentacle that had Miku's ankles. "Go!" he shouted to her, using the Force to bring the lightsaber back to his hand.
He let the tentacle drag him in more, then threw his lightsaber again, using the Force to guide it. The green blade went clean through the other side, and with a horrid screech, the plant shuddered and went still. Luke didn't take any chances, though - he called the lightsaber back to his hand and shut it off.

"Where are you, Steve?" Miku breathed, turning in place to find a clue to their direction. She was answered by the sound of the linear launcher going off nearby followed by a heart-stopping, inhuman roar.

Well, they were fighting, the monster appeared to having a grand old time stopping them from doing anything but getting injured. Miku's heart plummeted somewhere into her stomach, as she kept running towards them. "Let him go!" she shrieked.
no subject
He ignited his lightsaber - not because he was going to go on a limb-chopping spree or anything, he figured Steve would never forgive him for that, but because a lightsaber was a bright, humming way to get attention, and he wanted to give Leon some time to get away, if he could, or for someone to move him to safety.
"Hey!" he called out. "We're the ones you're looking for!"
no subject
It was hard to see all the way across the room (and with one eye in the process of healing itself up), so he drew within ten yards before there was any reaction. The growl turned into a low rumble in his throat, and his body started trembling.
Then the Tyrant started slowly backing away.

When Steve dropped his newer toy and moved towards the others, she pushed herself to her feet, shaking off the aching feeling in her bones and the burning of her skin.
"Be careful! Don't get too close!" She called at the new arrivals, before running to Leon's side to make sure he was all right.
no subject
Not so much, no. He wasn't conscious, and outside of breathing, or twitching whenever coughed up some blood, he wasn't moving either.
no subject
Not that the creature was necessarily Steve. "W...what do we do?" she murmured to Luke. "I... I can't run." Her legs wouldn't let her, unfortunately, firmly in place.
no subject
Carefully, Luke stepped forward, lightsaber still glowing as he swung it through the air. Hopefully it would give Miku time to get to Claire without anything happening to her.

Still backing away, the Tyrant looked tense and like he was ready to strike at any time-- as he already had, several times. But this time there was something stirring behind the rage, something that stood out from the static filling his head and ordering him to attack, to hurt and kill.
No.
What? He'd had the chance to kill two of them already, and had come desperately close to both. Why hadn't he finished? It was as easy as closing his hand around them, crushing them to death without even trying. It would be easy to kill these two new ones, one of whom was coming at him with a weapon. They stood against him. They must die.
No. No.
This man, those two women, that man on the floor... They had to die.
No. I WON'T.
He looked like a frightened animal as he continued backing into the corner, though now he was trembling more than ever. The static was getting louder again, trying desperately to drown out the words.
He growled again.
