Biweekly Warfare Training - Block Six

[REMINDER, GUYS. No one is required to tag to have learned anything in these classes. This is why we have the handwavey thread, and we keep you updated on what was covered. We'd at least LIKE you to tag the handwavey thread just to say your dude was there, so that if it comes up in conversation in other logs, everyone knows, but you don't have to tag in to the other subthreads. <3]

The atmosphere this time was vastly different than it had been for the past couple of weeks. The most noticable difference was that it was outdoors; the sun shone brightly, beating down on the military parade ground. Several hundred feet away, a massive wall could be seen, at least twenty feet tall, and the sounds of a city emanated from behind it. Occasionally, a pair of draconians would be spotted walking the ramparts.

The shooting range off to one side looked very out of place in the obviously medieval setting, but it was a necessity; that portion of the training was all Ronon's, and Kang let him have complete control of it.

An interesting addition to the piles of wooden weaponry was a wicker basket filled with strips of multi-colored cloth.

Ronon turned to his scaled friend. "Everything on your end is ready, right?"

"Yeah. Hopefully this won't go as badly as I fear," Kang sighed, squaring his shoulders and raising his voice so that everyone else could hear him. "We've got a few surprises for you all this time. Those--" he pointed at the basket "--are blindfolds. You can probably guess what they're for. Admittedly, I myself don't have much, if any, experience fighting while blind, so you all won't be the only ones learning something new over the next few days. The rest of them, you'll find out as the day progresses."

[Things to be covered!

THIS BLOCK HAS A THEME. And that theme is learning how to fight while relying on senses other than sight. For Tactics, they'll go over some military history from various worlds.

Previously!

April 26 - May 9: Basics of hand-to-hand, proper knife and sword handling. Important points: Eye contact with an opponent at all times, prevention of telegraphing moves, breathing, learning to read an opponent and spot weaknesses. Most of it so far has been defensive rather than offensive.

May 10 - May 23: More hand-to-hand, basic offensive moves with knives and swords, basics of guns.

May 24 - June 6: Basics of hand-to-hand, shooting practice with handguns and knife and sword training. It was the start of more offensive training.

June 7 - June 20: The beginning of Ohm training. Hand to hand as always. More Sword training. More shooting practice and gun maintenance. Gotta keep those guns clean.

August 2 - August 15: Revision of hand-to-hand, sword, knife and axe combat and firearms!]

He'd mostly stayed clear of training sessions after the first attempt at joining in. It had appeared to him as if he'd likely be laughed out of the room considering his size and what most call his disability.
However today, Renne had gotten wind of this round's theme and curiosity had overwhelmed his shyness. Aside from that, being one that deals with lack of any sight on a daily basis, a small part of him postulates that maybe he might have something to offer.

Hence, the Renne carefully walks, trailing along the wall to his destination: A spot near to the edge fo the Sensorium chamber to at least have a moment to listen before deciding to either keep quiet or speak up.

There's a precog in the obersvation area.

Nura had heard that Maydril had been attending these warefare training sessions and decided to exercise her will as a good mother and come to watch her surrogate child train, and also to give moral support if needed to (although she will always give support no matter what). She seats herself in a chair up at the front, crossing one leg over the other casually, and folds her hands in her lap.

Example hand-to-hand sparring

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ronon grinned at Kang and turned to face everyone once it was time to begin.

"Today we'll be sparring in front of you and then again, but with a difference. Pay close attention to our movements and take notes on our forms and where we aim for."

He turned to Kang and stepped back.

Ronon was looking forward to sparring with Kang for a while. The dreadlocked ex-runner grinned a sadistic grin at Kang. This will be a good fight, He thought.

After a moment's pause, Ronon burst into action and quickly closed the gap between the two warriors to throw a punch to Kang's head.

Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ronon dumped a basket in front of him. In it were blindfolds of varying colours. "Everyone grab a blindfold. You saw what we did, now it's your turn." He grinned. This was going to be hard, but very enlightening for some. Not everyone got the hang of it the first go, neither did he. "Find a partner, preferrably someone you're comfortable with. One of you will be blindfolded while the other one will attack. First we'll try to concentrate on blocking attacks that you can't see." There was a lot of uncomfortable shuffling going on in the crowd as people went to find their partner.

"Attackers, give your blindfolded partners time to adjust to their other senses and don't attack too hard. Give warning attacks here and there. I don't want to see any of you beating up a blindfolded person... yet."

[identity profile] ruffntumblenut.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruffnut was not particularly well liked among the people she'd met so far...and for that matter she wasn't very good at keeping quiet so this would be difficult for her.

To start she simply stood wearing the blindfold as a bandanna waiting for anyone unlucky enough to lack a partner to offer to spar with her.

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] drowpaladin.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maydril had tucked her blindfold into her belt, where it hung limply, a bright splash of green against the dull blue-gray of her armor.

"You have not a partner?" she asked. "May I partner you?"

Ruff might have a chance. Maydril hadn't entirely gotten the hang of being entirely silent in her armor...

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] ruffntumblenut.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"YEAH!" Ruffnut responded a bit too enthusiastically. She was so ready to go she didn't even process right away how Maydril had the distinct look of not a human about her.

Pulling her blindfold down Ruffnut assumed a stance that the fellow vikings on board would know as a dragon fighting stance which looks kind of like how a high school wrestler stands before lunging at the other wrestler.

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] drowpaladin.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Come at me, then, you," Maydril said, making a gesture that Ruffnut clearly could not see, but it made the chainmail that covered her beneath the armor jangle a bit. Just enough to potentially give Ruffnut an idea of where the half-drow was.

She balanced on the balls of her feet and watched her opponent carefully, wary for the first hint of movement.

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] ruffntumblenut.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruffnut didn't hesitate for a second. The minute Maydril spoke her first word she hurled herself across the space, her entire body thrown into the pounce without an once of holding herself back. "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] drowpaladin.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a bit of jingling off to one side as Maydril ducked out of the Viking's way, steadying herself to keep her balance.

She said nothing more, breathing softly, and only watching to see if Ruffnut would stop herself. If she caught the jangling of Maydril's mail, the half-elf was still within grabbing distance.

Re: Hand-to-hand >:D

[identity profile] ruffntumblenut.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruffnut hit the ground where Maydril had been and rolled forward. Once she was on her feet she lunged again for the jangling noise. The way she moved was primitive and beast like, but quick enough not to be under estimated.

OK, books. Now this is something that Laurie can definitely do. She takes a book happily and then takes a seat. She listens intently to her teacher's voice, awaiting the long lecture to come. Eagerly, I might add.

Any advantage Billy might have had from training with other senses from Renne and having to navigate without his glasses at times when bullies broke them (his sight without glasses is so atrocious that it's nigh-useless) is negated by his beginner skill level.

So he's still the class goat, though he does catch on to the tactics studies quickly and is willing to read if anyone can't.

Wanda mostly worked on hand to hand. She was all ready very experienced but there was always more to learn.

Cassie also mostly focused on hand to hand but she did a fair amount of time training with knives and guns.

Loren and Sofia evenly spaced their time between all three.

Kawalsky spent his time with the guns.

Jamie is concentrating more on the blindfolded exercises this time around, although he does get in some training with the guns. He's really no better or worse than anyone else when it comes to fighting blindfolded, although once or twice he seems to get in what looks to be a lucky dodge.

The history of tactics mostly sustains his interest, although there's likely a few times where his attention will start to wander before he catches himself.

Re: Handwaving~

Kettch was fascinated by the firearms and was eager to learn how to use such magic weapons. He spends a lot of time this session trying to use the guns. However, most of them are too big for him and the recoil sends him flopping onto his backside or even flat on his back.

He does, eventually, manage to aim more or less at the target, though.

Tactics don't really interest him much, but the sword and hand-to-hand combat are interesting enough that he pays attention to the training.

Hiccup learned some gun basics, and practiced enough to at least vaguely hit the target. He also learned a bit with knives, since that's the only weapon he's got right now, but mostly focused on the guns.

Last but not least, he really focused on the tactics, and now plans to read those books in his free time.

Knives

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, they weren't going to be practicing knife fighting blindfolded today. Ronon figured that between the hand-to-hand and sword practice, there's been enough blindfolding for the day. Today was just going to be sets of drills.

"Grab a wooden knife and line up in 6 rows in front of me. We'll be learning more knife techniques today." Ronon summoned a random knife-wielding, human male via Stacy's Sensorium magic. "This is... Taric, for name's sake." He shifted into his fighting stance, feet apart. Ronon made a show of adjusting his grip so the blade was pointing up. Then he ducked slightly as Taric slashed in slow motion at Ronon's head, across his face. Ronon brought his left arm up to swat away Taric's arm while brining his knife down in an opposite diagonal slice fashion underneath the left arm to slash at Taric's body. Then Ronon 'stabbed' at Taric in the open abdomen area. Then Taric, in slow motion, brought his knife arm back and sliced down across Ronon's gut. This again was blocked by Ronon bringing his arm on the inside of Taric's knife arm and pushing it away, leaving Taric's chest exposed to Ronon. Ronon again, stabbed at the chest area. He continued this drill a few more times making sure people understood.

"Now turn to the person to the side of you and practice what 'Taric' and I did. Swap roles after doing 20 sets. Take it slow and when you feel more confident, try to get faster at it."

Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
As out of place as it may have seemed, Ronon had a firing range there set up, somewhat similar to the firing range he's had set up the last few weeks. But, this time the guns were different. On each table was an FN P90 (http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/P90_submachine_gun). Picking one up, he demonstrated to the crowd how to take off safety, switch to semi-automatic and automatic. He gave a short spiel on how in his world, especially on Atlantis, these guns were the standard issue firearm and rattled off a few of the characteristics of it. He fired at the targets a few times until the clip ran out and reloaded it.

"As always people, we'll be practicing shooting until your clip runs out of ammo. Then it's the next person's turn."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
When everyone had had their turn, the Major stepped up to the table, smoothly switched out the clip with a rapid, practiced skill, and fired into the exact bullseye of the target until it was empty again. At that range, it was nothing like a challenge, not for someone of her experience and hardware, but she did it anyway, to feel the recoil.

It was the principle of the thing.

"I'd like to have a word with you, Ronon Dex."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ronon saw the Major step up and empty out the clip with precision. Looking around, some of the other students had noticed too and some of the new people were gawking at her before they went back to their practice.

At the Major's request, he nodded towards the side of the firing range where he could still keep an eye on things but be mostly out of earshot.

"You wanted a word?" He had no idea what the Major could have possibly wanted with him.

Re: Guns

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
She followed his direction towards establishing, if not privacy, then a semblance of it. It was clear he was confused, or at least rude, but manners had never been a pre-requisite for keeping her company.

"How busy are you, on this ship?" She asked, conversationally. After all, she had all the time in the world, or so it would seem.

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The question took Ronon by surprise and he had to wonder why she'd ask him that. He studied her for a moment, trying to discern what she was wanting from him.

"..Uh, besides running these classes with Kang, I'm not really busy... Is there something you want me to do?"

Ronon assumed there was a favor she wanted him to do. The Major struck him as a let's get down to business type of person. He did have a lot of spare time from his class preparation that didn't take long at all. And now, since the classes were in the Sensoriums, he didn't have to prepare equipment like he had to in the past.

Whatever it was, Ronon was hoping the Major's request would be something more worth his while than sitting around and watching movies. Truth be told, Ronon was missing going out on the field. He seriously missed out on Zokez II.

"I'm putting together a small team," she replied, quietly, and met his suspicious expression with the perfect serenity that masked how sharply she was watching him, "I'd like to offer you a job."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A job on a small team? It didn't take long for Ronon to remember that small sensorium challenge that the Major ran a few weeks back. She had been vague about the purpose of the challenge in which he had to demonstrate his shooting, fighting and tactical abilities.

He continued to study the Major's face but made no point of being discreet about it as he narrowed his eyes in consideration. "And what does this team do that Security and the rest can't?" By the manner of their conversation and Kusanagi's conduct at the sensorium challenge, it didn't seem like it was going to be a team most people would agree with. Ronon figured he wouldn't have a problem with that, especially if it was for a goal he could agree with.

"Security and the general combat groups are bound by public opinion, and the morals of the council," As the Yeerk issues repeatedly pointed out, said morals were nothing like objective, and held no mercy for those that fell below a certain threshold for the xenophobic.

And with people like Superman aboard, who could enforce with dramatic invulnerability their own ethics...

"The laws set up by the people on this ship are a good tool to curb anarchy, but we are at war. The rules of engagement aren't going to be a consideration in every one of Kennedy's decisions."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-27 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded, taking in the Major's words. He knew what she was asking and she did have a very good point. In fact, he was reminded of his own issue with the Yeerks and what had landed him in prison just before the zombie outbreak. Usually, his way of dealing with things (which, quite frankly, was doing away with threats) wasn't 'friendly' enough for the crew. It was something he had to come to terms with when he first came to Atlantis too. Nevertheless, one does not survive being hunted for seven years with a tracking beacon implanted onto one's back without shedding morals and ethics.

"... You don't win a war by being merciful to your enemies," Came the quiet reply. "Do the ship's leaders know of your team? The last time I went against the.. morals of the crew, I was thrown into prison."

"I report to the Captain directly," she was just as quiet. A killer she might be, but all the blood on her hands was legal and government sanctioned, "Providing you're under orders, and act discreetly, there's no reason to worry."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ronon's face eased up a little and he came to his decision. "That's good enough for me. I'm in."

Re: Guns

[identity profile] standaloneshell.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good."

She held out her hand, a small earbud in place, ringed round with pliable, fluid plastic for a tight, comfortable fit-- a CODEC, "This will allow you to keep in touch with us- privately. There's a safehouse (http://robots-omgh8u.livejournal.com/tag/strike%20team) in the city, you should be able to find the location on your omnicomm, now that you've been authorized. Don't deplete the supplies by more than one fifth, if you can avoid it."

It shouldn't have needed saying that this was a secret, but with this crew...

"I'm sure I don't need to tell you that this group isn't openly recognized. There's enough naivete onboard that it could become a problem if this became public, and Kennedy might be forced to disavow all knowledge," she wouldn't blame him for it, either. Even the Chief had known the expediency of remaining in power himself and trusting his men to weather the storm for the sake of political leverage, "Got that?"

Re: Guns

[identity profile] runnerwithagun.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Got it." He was slightly annoyed that she had to tell him that but she did have to make that clear.

"Since I'm a member of Security and I run these clsses, I can probably get equipment we need with relative ease."

(( OOC: btw i can't view the link you gave o.o do i have to friend him using the character journal?"))

"Do it slowly, and keep under the radar," she ordered. The voice of command came easily to Kusanagi; she was well used to being in charge, "I'll trust you do be discreet."

"Understood." Ronon was starting to look forward to this new job. The Major looked like she knew what she was doing. That in itself was very re-assuring.

"I should get back to the class, Kusanagi," Said the runner, excusing himself.

Guest Trainer- Rtas 'Vadum

[personal profile] shroudedintent 2010-08-17 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
To one side of the military parade grounds lay a relatively large wooden structure. A mess hall it would it would seem from the many tables that littered the room in a relatively ordered fashion, parted to either side though to leave a relatively open area. Large wooden columns braced the roof at regular intervals, to one side of the large room lay a raised platform and it was on this platform on which the already imposing Sangheili stood.

“Many of you rely on sight alone to face an opponent. In combat you must not neglect your other sense, to do so would be to invite your downfall,” His tone a commanding one, one that brooked no argument, “To that end, today you will learn to take advantage of your other senses, you will face an opponent that will take away the advantage of your sight,” letting that sink in briefly as he looked them all over, “You will face me,”

“You may use what melee weapons you are comfortable with, however do not expect this to be easy,” With that he would step back, activating his active camouflage as he did so. Speaking even as he faded from sight, “Who wishes to face me first?”

Re: Guest Trainer- Rtas 'Vadum

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would," Katara said, stepping forward. She was already assessing the structure, and though she had never truly done this before, she had seen the kind of tactics Toph had employed with Aang, though she never thought she would have to use them herself. She had a idea she would be shaky at first but she would learn. What was more, it was Rtas, someone she'd met during the Nightmare King fiasco, when they'd had to fight the Terminators. That had been one of the scariest fights she'd had to face in her life, and she was glad NOT to have to deal with all of that again. Here, however, she knew that Rtas would not be holding back, and so neither should she.

"I'm ready," she said, pulling out the katana given to her by Nanashi. It would mostly be for defense, as she wasn't an expert with it yet.

Re: Guest Trainer- Rtas 'Vadum

[personal profile] shroudedintent 2010-08-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Very well, ready yourself," Was the disembodied reply she received. Katara, he remembered her from the time they had fought together previously during the Nightmare King's incursion, she had fought well. Hmm, time to see just how well she could adapt.

By the time the active camouflage had fully taken into affect 'Vadum was on the move, his motions surprisingly quiet for one of his size. The camouflage hiding him from view as he circled to flank Katara even by the time she confirmed that she was ready. Time to test her reactions. Not a second after she had spoken the Sangheili stepped forward and struck, a powerful blow aimed at her side with a balled fist.

Re: Guest Trainer- Rtas 'Vadum

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-08-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Katara gritted her teeth but nodded. She may not have had a blindfold, but she had to act as if she had one nonetheless: sight was not going to be her friend here. She had to do this exactly the way that Toph would have: she had to SEE without really seeing, and that meant using all of the other senses that she had, from the most subtle rustle of clothing.

But Rtas was a tough person to detect: the moment he disappeared, Katara felt an ache in her stomach, noticing exactly how quiet Rtas was moving. She swallowed, but continued to keep her ears open, waiting. Just after her "I'm ready," she realized her mistake of talking at all. She realized a presence a second too late and was too slow to sidestep the hit, taking most of the fist.

She swallowed a gasp and only steadied her feet, taking a breath.
shroudedintent: (Slice and dice)

[personal profile] shroudedintent 2010-08-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
The Sangheili drew back once more the moment after he'd struck. Circling slowly as he watched her, giving her only the briefest of moments to pick up the quiet sounds of his movements, the sounds of his boots against the wooden floor, the smallest sounds his armour made as it moved, then it was time to strike again.

Stepping in forward once more, this time in front and just that bit to the side he attacked. Only the slightest of blurs seen as his hand shot forward, this time open as he aimed for her neck. If he connected he would lift her from the ground easily, no Katara, he most certainly was not going easy on you, not that he would go easy on any who would face him.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-08-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Katara was not going to do anything stupid like talking anymore now. She had been taught better than this and now she could hear Toph yelling at her in her mind to toughen up. The thought of that now kept her focused, and she took a small breath, keeping her movements as silent as possible.

Now that she's more concentrated, its easier to pay attention to everything around her, or at least what she thought of as a net of space around her. Now the moment the air space feels different, she can sense it without needing to see. When the flurry of movement happens, she shifts her leg back and ducks under her blow, her hands in front of her chest in stance.

She silently knew there would be no pity for her.
