Between the time spent with the Animorphs and the time spent keeping track of the Yeerks still walking free, Ax had begun to keep a rather odd schedule. It was hard to tell, since there was no real way to keep track of time on board this ship, but he tended to have the labs mostly to himself when he came in. That made it even more easy than usual to notice the comings and goings of other people in the area.

Especially when those people included Jaime Reyes and his supposedly-symbiotic insect friend.

< I didn't know that you were part of the Science Department. >

"I'm...not," says Jaime, looking around. "Is Dr. Sera here?"

< I'm afraid not, > Ax said, fixing his main eyes on Jaime while one stalk eye scanned the area and the other kept watch on his project. < What did you need him for? I can tell him that you stopped by. >

Too important to leave, too secret to tell Ax why he's staying.

< ...Perhaps it's something I could help you with? > Ax said after a moment or two. If Jaime wasn't part of the Science department, Ax wasn't entirely comfortable with him lurking around while he was working. < Andalite science is more advanced than many of the human scientists awake on board. >

The young man looks more nervous the more that Ax asks questions.

"I have some questions that only Dr. Sera can answer," he says, hoping that will dissuade Ax from asking more questions.

The more nervous Jaime became about the questioning, the more interested Ax became. After all, it was entirely possible that the nervous one was Jaime's scarab instead.

< Are you quite sure? > he asked politely. < Is it a private project of some sort? >

Jaime's eyes lock with Ax's main set of eyes.

"Very private. As in, it's not any of your business."

So back off.

Rarely is Jaime remotely rude, and while his tone is kept from being too brash, he still sounds upset.

Ax stared impassively back at Jaime, refusing to be shamed into looking away first. But he was definitely interested now.

< I see. >

A staring contest it is then.

Face it, Jaime, the guy has four eyes, you're going to lose.

"For all you were someone that had his secrets, you sure are the nosy type."

Ax could even blink them all individually. He'd noticed that humans tended to find it disturbing. Specifically, Marco had called it cheating and "deeply wrong and unsettling", and told him not to do it anymore.

< Finding out things that were intended to be secret was one of the things that kept me alive, > he answered. < It's a difficult habit to break, especially when it's still useful to me. >

This is highly unusual behavior for Reyes. Perhaps he ought to find some spare time to look into this...
