Damn Paperclip [Open]

Julian glared at the paperclip. Or, rather, the charred shard of metal that used to be a paperclip, which was sitting on the floor of an otherwise empty sensorium.

He had tried to pick it up and move it, something that should be a simple task for a telekinetic like him, but his precision control was still shot to hell. He ended up using too much energy in too small a space, which resulted in an explosion.

For the fifth time in a row.

It was getting annoying. He used to have perfect control. Hell, he was on the verge of learning how to disassemble molecules. Now, thanks to Emma unleashing him into overdrive, he can move a mountain through sheer force of will, but can't pick up anything smaller than an SUV without exploding it.

He was getting better at it with practice, but it was slow and frustrating. But damn it all to hell if he was going to ask for help. He could do this on his own. He'd just have to try again.

Which he did, having the sensoriums make another paperclip for him. All he had to do was concentrate, focus, grab hold of it, lift it and then.... then shield his eyes from shrapnel as that one exploded too.

"Dammit..."

"So... what? All precision and short range, no power and distance?"

"I got power--one time I got pissed off and accidentally blew up every gun in LA. But unlocking it? It wasn't ever meant to actually be telekinesis. It was meant to provide a protective aura like Superman's invulnerability, and to give me fake superstrength. That's how the mooks at Cadmus designed me anyway. I just don't have the reach. No line of sight stuff--I have to touch something or touch something that touches something else to reach what I'm going for."

"So yours is more like a personal forcefield... well, a personal telekinetic field, really." He pondered that for a moment. "How well can you focus and shape the field by itself?"

"Okay, I guess. As long as it's kept in close."

"Does your field feel more like water, air, or something more solid?"

"Solid. Definitely more solid. It's like a shell."

"Then we have to get it to loosen up."

"You wanna get a little more vague?" Kon asks. "How exactly am I supposed to do that?"

"We'll stretch your mind. Call it exercises in lateral thinking." What? You asked him to be more vague.

"For the record, I was being sarcastic. I didn't mean for you to actually get more vague."

Julian just smirked.

"We'll have to train your mind to loosen up your tk field so it moves more like something liquid. We'll also have to get you used to thinking of things as other and manipulating them as such."

"You know, if we could merge into one being, we'd be the most awesome telekinetic since the Phoenix."
