"OW! That so totally hurts!" -- Charles Xavier

The battle against the Ohm raged on, and the casualties on the ground were mounting. Injured crew members got emergency treatment in the field, which largely amounted to patching them up so they wouldn't die sometime within the next fifteen minutes. After that, they were quickly picked up by shuttle and brought back to the ship, where they were sent to a medbay that was getting progressively more crowded.

The situation was growing increasingly dire, to the point that Stacy activated one of the AI's to help out.

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."

Sighing, Fate sat up again. "You know you can't lie to me about this. I know how badly you must be hurting right now."

"Fate, lie down," she admonished before shaking her head. "I'm just banged up a bit. I'll be fine! A few bruises and scrapes won't kil lme, you know."

"I'll rest if you will," Fate said, crossing her arms. She flinched just a little at the sharp jab in her side, but other than that, she maintained her glare.

"You're hurt a lot worse than I am," Nanoha pointed out, crossing her own arms and trying not to wince. "I promise I'll have the doctors take a look at me once they've looked at everyone who needs it more."

"You went all the way up to Blaster-3, in addition to all the fighting you did before that. And you used Starlight Breaker," That was the trouble with huge attacks like that, Nanoha. They're very, very hard to miss. "Even if you're waiting... lay down, please?"

"Fate-chan, I only used Blaster-3 for a few minutes before scaling back," Nanoha pointed out, though she was fairly sure it wouldn't work. "And Starlight Breaker doesn't use any more of my magic than Divine Buster. You know that!"

A pause. "There aren't any beds that other people don't need more. I'll be fine!"

"I know you only used Blaster-3 for a few minutes, but just the fact that you used it at all means you're a lot more hurt than you want me to think you are!" Nope, that didn't work at all, Nanoha.

"And if you don't want to take another bed, you can have mine." Fate said. And, as if to prove how serious she was, she moved over to the side of the bed, ignoring the pain in her rib and head, and tried to stand up. She nearly fell back onto the bed, but after bracing herself against the wall, managed to shakily get to her feet.

"If it's only for a few minutes I can handle it just--Fate-chan!" Nanoha moved as the taller girl tried to get up, putting her hands firmly on Fate's shoulders. "You need to get into bed right now. You're hurt a lot worse than I am!"

She would force you back into bed, Fate, if that was what it took.

"I don't care," Fate said. And she meant it, too. She always put Nanoha's well-being before her own, and this time was no different.

"I won't be able to rest unless I know you are too, Nanoha. So there's no point hogging a bed until then." It was... kind of a bluff. Fate really would've gone through with the threat, but she doubted she'd be able to stand on her own two feet for more than a few minutes.

"But I do," Nanoha frowned, putting Fate's health before her own as per usual. "I told you I'd get looked at, didn't I? But if you don't lie down right now, I'll tell them not to see me until you're okay."

Her voice took on a more pleading tone. "Fate-chan, please... you look like you're about to wobble over at any minute. I can rest just fine like this."

It was really hard to ignore that tone in Nanoha's voice, but Fate wasn't ready to give up just yet, despite her body's protests.

"... Let's make a deal, then. Until the doctors come to treat one of us, we can share this bed."

Nanoha sighed. If that was what it took to get Fate lying still...

"...fine, we can do that."

Fate let out a sigh of relief, and slowly sat back down on the bed. That was one weight off her shoulders, at least.

"You know, you can be really stubborn sometimes, Nanoha," she said. She didn't really sound annoyed, though.

"And you can't?" Nanoha waited until Fate was settled before sitting on the bed beside her, very carefully swinging her legs over so that she didn't jostle the blonde girl.

It did feel nicer to lie down, and she gingerly rested her hand on Fate's hip.

"I'm nowhere near as bad as you are!" Fate said, pouting a little as she took the hand on her hip, lacing their fingers together. "At least I try to stay put when you tell me to."

"You make it sound like I was going to go somewhere..." Nanoha squeezed Fate's hand.

"Right. I bet you're planning to sneak out of here as soon as the doctors patch you up..." Fate said with a laugh. But really, that didn't sound like a bad idea... she'd much rather rest in her own bed than this one.

"The moment their backs are turned," Nanoha said wryly, and then she moved up so that their faces could be closer together. "...let me know if you're uncomfortable or it hurts, okay?"

"Well, I can't say nothing hurts right now..." Despite the comment, Fate smiled as she touched her forehead to Nanoha's, ignoring the tiny jolt of pain that ran through her head. "But I'll let you know if it gets worse."

"All right."

And then Nanoha tilted her head just enough to the side so that she could press her mouth to Fate's in a soft, short kiss - and little droplets of relief began to trickle down her face.

The smile faded a little as Fate noticed the tears falling. She reached up, placing her hands on Nanoha's cheeks, and leaned closer so she could briefly press their lips together again.

"Please don't cry..." She murmured, using her thumbs to wipe away the other girl's tears.

"I know, I know," Nanoha mumbled, wanting to cling to Fate but knowing that she shouldn't given the girl's injuries. "I'm just... everyone's safe, so..."

She'd been worried. She'd been incredibly worried. And her relief at her family being safe (and her mental and physical exhaustion from the battle) meant that it was very, very difficult to stop crying. "Fate-chan..."

... And that tone of voice just broke Fate's heart, and there's no way she couldn't comfort the other girl after that. So, very slowly and carefully, she pulled Nanoha into her arms, trying not to wince. Her wounds hurt, but being unable to do anything to help her friend hurt even worse, so she'd just have to deal with the pain for now.

Nanoha could tell that moving hurt Fate, and she tried to pull away ever so slightly. "No, Fate-chan--don't, you're hurt..."

"It's okay," she sniffed. "I'm just... I'm relieved. That's all."

"Too late," Fate said, laughing a little. "And you know how I get whenever you cry... not that I mean that in a bad way, of course."

A small part of her, though, was agreeing with the first thing Nanoha said. She really shouldn't be doing this... she was sure that she'd be yelled at if a doctor decided to come around soon.

She didn't really care, though. This helped take her focus off the pain.
