"OW! That so totally hurts!" -- Charles Xavier

The battle against the Ohm raged on, and the casualties on the ground were mounting. Injured crew members got emergency treatment in the field, which largely amounted to patching them up so they wouldn't die sometime within the next fifteen minutes. After that, they were quickly picked up by shuttle and brought back to the ship, where they were sent to a medbay that was getting progressively more crowded.

The situation was growing increasingly dire, to the point that Stacy activated one of the AI's to help out.

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."

It was finally over. Breathing hard, he laid back and processed the sensations he felt. His ears still buzzed, yes, but the rest of his body felt fairly normal. Curious, he probed at what had been a bruise over his ribcage. It had hurt tremendously before, but now it barely twinged.

Shifting the hole in the plantsuit, he found that Matt was correct about his leg. "Got it. I feel...surprisingly normal, actually. What was that process?"

"Healing on a quantum level, rearranging and recreating physical shape and form by constructing matter from the base mana that permeates the energy fields around us and in the body on a molecular level," explained Matt. He grinned.

"In laymans terms, I just quintessenced you back to health. With magic. Life magic, mana, whatever you wanna call it."

He pulled out a juice box. "Want one? You need electrolytes."

"Technical terms aren't a problem for me," he said with a slight smile. "I'll have to remember all that. People on my world haven't studied energy fields extensively, and there's little we have the technology to rearrange on the molecular level."

Normally he would have said more, but he was still feeling strangely exhausted. "Thanks again. Oh---sure!"

Billy happily accepted the juice box. He'd been rather thirsty, come to think of it.

"Yeah it's a twitchy subject. People on my world aren't devout magic healers, but what I do know is battlefield magic. Artillery magic it's usually called. I heal with the finesse of a brick to the back of the head." laughed Matt.

"But quintessence, it's commonly known as the fifth element and manifests as lightning, or vice versa, as pink light. It's what makes up everything on a molecular level but in a spectrum uncommon to normal scans and checks. Sort of a sub-field like a grid all around us, and what we see here is the external layer of it."

"Food and water replenish mana, but I've been siphoning a ton of magic from our bus' engine. Glad it's self-maintaining and self-perpetuating." and Matt sipped his drink. "It's like they say, eat and drink before and after blowing up a mountain."

"A truly beautiful talent to watch," he joked with some truth behind it. The electrocution would have been fascinating to watch, he was sure, if it hadn't been directed at him.

"What are the other four elements? I'm guessing Irma's water is one of them." True, the elements being discussed weren't the ones he would use to describe the world, but it was useful information to know.

A pause, and he looked over at Matt with concern. "Is the detonation of mountains a regular occurrence where you come from?" That last saying gets an eyebrow quirk.

Don't worry, the questioning's just a way to distract himself from going numb with worry about the carnage below.

"Yeah it's pretty spectacular when you watch it in action. And yeah, Water, Fire, Air, Earth and Quintessence. Five elements which all have different effects to them, beyond the normal scope of typical association. Like water carries music for example, and fire bolsters knowledge as well."

"Once in a while," admitted Matt, thinking of the last few battles he had been in. "Usually we refrain from doing so but when in Rome, you make due with what you've got."

"That's fascinating. I'd always associated water with knowledge, but I believe I understand why fire would be related to it."

Leaning back, he chuckled over a sudden yawn. "Wow. Just...rest up if you can, all right? Is there someone around to relieve you?

[identity profile] lackofdarkwings.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, it's amazing what sort of things you can find in the old associations," said Matt with a grin. "You should meet Taranee if she pops. She's the most brainy girl but has a temper to match her element."

"I'll be fine. Got a couple more people to look after before I get off shift. Lots of people to look after, and I think Vivio wants me back soon by her bedside. I promised her moms I'd look after her." added Matt, stifling a yawn. "You get some rest. I'll be on my feet for a while longer."

"I'll keep an eye out for her when the pods are opened next."

Satisfied, he slowly nodded and dropped his head onto the pillow. "Go to Vivio. I saw her on my way in, and she could use her company."
