Kidlet Sparring Round Two

It had become something of a pattern lately.

Since their first spar and making up with each other, Negi and Vivio had been sparring on a regular basis, training and refining techniques. As a mutual agreement, he held back from Magica Erebea since there was no need to go that wild in a fight.

This time, they took their battles to the Sensoriums now, since it was easier to control the damage done to the surrounding area. Light and magic crackled as Negi thrust his hand out, unleashing a pair of light spears at Vivio. He had been working on unassisted flight and magic spun at his heels, keeping him aloft. It was taxing, but definitely doable since their battles were a lot more interesting in the sky.

And they could get snacks afterwards since fighting burned a lot of calories.

As the spears of light shot out at her, Vivio had brought up a barrier to block the shots, watching them explode in front of her. At the moment, though, Vivio was positioned on the ground, panting a bit from the action.

The girl followed this up by unleashing a straight out magic shot at Negi, streaking towards him like a bullet.

Negi swerved around the attack but it clipped him on the side, causing his Wind Barrier to falter just a little. "Whoa!" exclaimed Negi as he righted himself from his unsteady spiral and swung his arms forward, already incanting silently.

Seventeen magic arrows of wind hurled out at Vivio, hoping to trap her in a bind.

"Wha...?" Vivio yelped a bit, noticing the magic arrows coming at her. Pushing off the ground, Vivio took to the skies, hoping to evade the arrows. Though she made it out, it was easy to see the strikes did nick her a bit.

"Not bad. Almost had me!"

"Same with yours!" called out Negi as he closed the distance. Vivio definitely excelled at the mid-to-long range attacks, and he was already charging a delayed spell in his fist, hoping to get in and hit her with it.

Vivio watched as Negi closed the distance between the two of them. Her instinct went for the best possible solution: she sat up the Rainbow Kick, intending on her to counter the attack and blow him back.

"...NOW!" Vivio shouted, thrusting her leg up to execute the attack.

Negi's fist met her kick and magic blossomed out as ribbons of wind arrows spiraled around in a Ouka Hoken. There was a long moment of power which kind of sounded like a whine of a Proton Pack charging up and then it exploded outwards, knocking the young Springfield backwards into the air from the force of the collision. Clearly Vivio's kick was way more powerful than the initial form of his cherry blossom fist.

Vivio grunted as the explosion erupted from their connection, causing her to be tossed back. As went into a flip and landed on her feet, skidding to the ground. She tried her best to hide a wince as she got back on her feet and into a fighting stance - that blow HURT.

"Are you okay? Don't tell me that's all right now!" Vivio called out.

"It's all good!" yelled Negi back as he shook the numbness from his hands and wrists. She had a lot of power behind those kicks and it was on par with at least Ku Fei's attacks.

"Didn't you have something new to show me?" inquired Negi as he started to charge up another spell.

"Yeah, I did... thoooough..." Vivio said, trailing off.

At that moment, a set of rings surround Negi, intending on binding the young mage. He wasn't going to get off THAT easily!

Caught off guard from the rings of magic, Negi was caught flat footed as he was forced to mid-air shundo out of the way. But one of the rings caught him fast around the ankle and he toppled forward before righting himself. "Aw man!"

A chuckle left Vivio's lips as she watched Negi get tangled up. Now was the time.

At that moment, a series of orbs crackling with energy surrounded Vivio. With a thrust of her hand, she shouted "SONIC SHOOTER!" and launched them at Negi.

FAST!

Without the ability to move or dodge, he threw up seven layers of barriers seconds before they impacted.

One.

Two.

Threefourfivesix...!

Negi was engulfed in a blast and from the smoke cloud, he plummeted to the ground.

Vivio's eyes went wide watching Negi drop to the ground. Did she go too far?

"Negi-kun!" Vivio called out, racing over to the boy, hoping to catch him before he hit the ground.

Disoriented from the blast (and it really stung to boot), Negi tried desperately to reactivate his flight when he found Vivio zooming after him. He thrust out his hand wordlessly, knowing she'd catch him.

Watching as Negi's hand thrust out towards her, Vivio reached out and caught the boy, pulling him close to make sure he wasn't going to fall again.

"I'm sorry, Negi-kun! I didn't realize...!" Vivio tried to apologize, panting a bit.

Negi, despite blushing, or was he flushed from the fight, had his expression in a wide grin when Vivio pulled him to her. "Are you kidding? That was amazing! I never thought magic could be focused that closely into a missile type attack and it punched through my shields like tissue paper!"

"What did you call it? Sonic Shooter? Wow!"

Vivio chuckled a bit, blushing as she pulled away from Negi. He was okay - that was good to know.

"Aheheh... thanks, Negi-kun. I didn't expect it to work as well as it did, though! That's why I was worried!" she said. "But, yes, it's called the Sonic Shooter. My mamas have attacks like that, but I don't think they're anywhere like mine...!"

"That's good though. New and unique original spells are the basis of any theory crafting." said Negi as he reasserted his spell.

He then noticed a fairly strong presence and said, "I think we're being watched..."

"Watched?" Vivio said, turning her head slightly... and blinking as she saw one of those aforementioned mamas. "Nanoha-mama?"

Hoo, boy...

The two of them might have an observer, watching quietly from a fairly concealed location. She didn't want Vivio to feel any more pressure because of her mother's presence, after all.

When Negi noticed Nanoha's presence, he immediately correlated the adorable girl he saw in the movie with the woman standing there. Her presence was unmistakable, an aura similar to some of the stronger girls in his class. It was very much like Asuna's Never Give Up sensation.

"That's your mother right?"

Vivio nodded a bit in agreement. "One of them. That's Nanoha...!" she said, a small smile on her face. Part of her was a bit worried. She was wondering how she'd take this.

So she'd been spotted after all. Nanoha sighed, shaking her head - really, she should have tried harder - before flying out into the open, wings shimmering to life at her heels.

"I guess I wasn't as well-hidden as I thought," she chuckled.

"Well that's in due for me being able to sense magic," replied Negi with an easy smile. He bowed politely. "I'm Negi Springfield, your daughters sparring partner and friend. It's a pleasure to meet you Ma'am."

Vivio chuckled a bit, blushing. "If it makes you feel better, Nanoha-mama, I didn't know you were here until Negi-kun pointed it out to me..."

"That is a bit better. That's a handy little skill, Negi-kun! Where'd you learn how to do that?"

The mage tilted her head to the side as she swooped down to where they were, hovering in midair. "And don't call me 'ma'am,' just Nanoha is fine~"

"Ah, alright then Nanoha," said Negi, blushing a little. Was it just him or was he constantly surrounded by attractive women?

"Your daughter is very skilled. Compliments to the one who trained her," said Negi as a bit of an ice breaker lest impending awkwardness followed.

Vivio began blushing some more. Seriously, she didn't feel she was ALL that great.

"I-It wasn't just Nanoha-mama - either the one here OR in my time!" Vivio said.

"She's pretty good, especially for someone her age," Nanoha nodded. "She's had good teachers, from what she tells me - and I know she works hard at it."

"Ah, but... don't let me keep you from your training, you know."

Negi laughed a little even though he was red. "Actually I think we're done for now. We only go for a few hours a day but she really got me good with that new spell of hers. It was pretty impressive, it punched through 7 layers of shielding to boot!"

He smiled at Vivio and patted her on the shoulder. "I should show you a few of my own spells and see if we can't adapt it to your style."

"W-Well, like I said, I didn't expect it to happen just like that! I might have put a bit too much power into it." Vivio said. "But, you think that could work? Adapting spells like that?"

"It might be tricky if it's from another world entirely," Nanoha said thoughtfully, "But even if you couldn't do the exact spell there's no reason it couldn't inspire you to create your own."

Something Nagi had said, though... "And what new spell would that be?"

Theorycrafting and basics alteration! He really did like Vivio's mom's ideas.

"Ah, it's the one she just got me with. Vivio, wanna show your mom again? I've got enough for 12 layers of shields."

Vivio nodded, a bit hesitantly. She was worried that it would be a TAD too much, especially seeing that Negi wanted to do this again so soon after the last attack.

Getting some distance away from Negi, she allowed the orbs of magical energy gather around her.

"Ready? SONIC SHOOTER!"

And again, the orbs rocketed toward Negi.

Well... Nanoha certainly hadn't been expecting something like that. It seemed like a meld of her and Fate's techniques ... had one of them taught it to Vivio, or had the girl come up with it on her own?

With a crackle of stuttering magic, Vivio's spell punched through the first seven layers of barriers before sputtering out and exploding on the ninth. Negi was ready for it though and he shundoed away to stand in front of Nanoha breathlessly as the explosion ruined the pile of barriers he had thrown up. "Really darn explody," he said with a flushed grin.

"He evaded it this time..." Vivio said. She let out a sigh of relief as she did. "The last time I did this, I ended up hitting Negi. I really didn't expect it to!"

"Mm, it seems powerful," she smiled. "Of course, that defense wasn't anything to shrug at, either."

"Who taught that to you, Vivio?"

Negi blushed at the praise of his defense. "It's just a simple barrier layer," he said modestly.

"I... learned it myself." Vivio said. "I just saw what you and Fate-mama had done and... adapted it."

"Simple, maybe, but it's a good execution thereof. Layered defense can be very powerful."

Her attention turned back to her daughter, and she beamed. "You made it yourself, then? Good job!" The mage chuckled. "I don't suppose there's anything else you've come up with on your own, or should I plan on being surprised?"

"Thank you for that Nanoha," said Negi, flushed and rubbing his head and shuffling his feet. It wasn't every day that he had gotten praised by a skilled mage and he was eager to know if Vivio came up with more ideas.

Vivio laughed a bit. "I think it would be worthwhile to just wait and see. Can't always reveal what we know all at once - it wouldn't be fun!"

And it would be a bit of a disadvantage for the caster, but Vivio didn't want to go that far in.

"On the other hand, if I don't know what you can do it makes it a bit harder to teach you," Nanoha teased, reaching out to squeeze Vivio's shoulder.

"Still... good work, Vivio."

Negi smiled at the pair and stepped back a little, just to allow them more room. He was a little sad that his own father wasn't there to compliment him, but this was after all, Vivio's moment. Best not rain on it.
