She Gets a Haircut Every June

If there was anything to say about Sherry, it was that once something got into her head, she certainly didn't let it go until it was finished. She'd found herself a new hiding spot (though not specifically hidden, as she'd made sure to say something to her parents about it) in the city at a small building that didn't seem to have one extraordinary purpose or another. It had walls and a dumbwaiter, doors and a floor, two stories. It was perfectly functional for holing herself up in and studying, or reading, or whatever little growing girls did alone when they didn't want to be bothered.

She'd spread out a bit of old paper, and sat herself in the middle of it, frowning at the pair of scissors she'd found in Possessions (what? It wasn't like she'd not seen other people rummaging through things that weren't theirs. At least she'd promised to return the scissors to Stacy when she was done). So, she was really going to do it, wasn't she?

Sherry brushed her hair out carefully, her nose twitching as the long bangs slipped past and tickled. A look in the hand mirror told her exactly what she already knew; her hair was growing quickly, just like the rest of her. It brushed her shoulders and fell just past her chin.

"Okay," she breathed and picked up her scissors. "It's just a little bit. Not as though I'm going to shave myself bald." Boy, but wouldn't that be more efficient?

Snip.

Snipsnipsnip.

Snipsnipsnipsnipsnip.

At least this wasn't too hard; Sherry already had a good idea of where her bangs were. But why wasn't this line straight like the other one?

Oh well.

"Yes," Sherry managed when the hair was removed. "And I don't want to be bald! I like my hair, I just don't... like it in my way," and even less when she finally brushed it right and someone (No names, Leon) come up behind her to mess it up.

Her father really needed a new morning ritual. Maybe he could go ruin Dr. Sera's hair instead. Sherry puffed her cheeks out at her parents in consternation.

Leon was not going to touch Luis' hair. Ever.

But he was going to go over and kiss Sherry on her puffed out cheeks.

"Just don't try to cut your own hair again, or else we much have to cut all your hair off and start growing it all over again."

Claire held the scissors clear when Leon came over, smiling and watching the exchange, laughing a little at cutting all Sherry's hair off and nodding her head.

"Fortunately it does always grow back. Still if we can avoid a total disaster we may as well, hm?"

Sherry made a face at her father before focusing on her mother. Maybe her mother was right and she should've just practiced before attempting it on herself. Next time, she would use Vega ~~it wasn't like anyone would be able to tell the difference.~~

"Yes," she agreed placidly with Claire. "But it was a desperate situation."

"It wasn't that bad," he told her. "Though..." He paused for a moment, then smirked a bit and shook his head.

"I'd tell you to come and talk to us first, which you should do, but I'm starting to think you inherited your mothers willingness to dive headfirst into things without looking."

"Hey!" Despite the fact that that was absolutely true, Claire rolled her eyes at Leon, tilting her head to the side. She waved the scissors in her hand at Leon, her mouth twisting into a slight smile.

"I'm not the only one in this family that can be impulsive."

Sherry smothered a giggle with her hand and squirmed out of the way of her parents. "It really was that bad. I'm your daughter, not your sheepdog. Anyway, maybe it's impulsiveness by osmosis?" ~~Or, "I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOUUUUUUU~!"~~

Something told her it would be very, very wise to move out of the way of her parents.

Yes, Sherry, it might be wise to move.

"Well, your brother is also impulsive," Leon added towards Claire, then looked at Sherry. "So, however you got it, it definitely came from that side of the family."

Because Leon is not impulsive or has ever made rash decisions or gone in blind or anything at all. Except for all the times he has, but those don't count!

"Do you want me to actually start listing off all the times you've done stupid things without thinking? Because I will." She smirked a little, raising up onto her knees. She knew full well that Leon was much more of a thinker than she was, and accepted that, but she also knew he had his fair share of situations he'd charged blindly into regardless of consequences. And she was absolutely stubborn enough to not let the point drop.

Her bangs half fixed and her parents being... her parents, Sherry scooted out of the line of verbal rapidfire and covered her face with her hands. She wondered which would be worse: running around for twenty minutes with messed up, chunky bangs, OR! listening to her parents flirt.

Because, yes, she'd listened to them long enough to finally learn that social cue.

"See, that's where you're wrong. It only looks like I'm being crazy and reckless, but it's all planned out. It's a super secret government agent technique called 'Making It Up As You Go Along.' It takes years to master."

Somehow he managed to say that with a perfectly straight face, though as he looked over at Sherry, he couldn't help laughing a bit.

"Are we bothering you, sweetheart?"

Claire flat out snorted at that, reaching out to shove Leon with the hand that didn't have scissors in it.

"Uh-huh. Call it whatever you want but it means the same thing." She gave him a smug look before her attention was called to their daughter who was covering her face with her hands, and she backed off a little, sitting back down on her heels.

"Sorry, sweetie."

"It's okay; I'm used to it now," Sherry smiled, and in some distant part of Sherry's brain, where normalcy reigned, she even found it kind of funny.

Gross, but funny. "Can we finish cutting my bangs, please?" It would at least keep Claire's hands busy enough that she wouldn't somehow stab Leon in the leg, anyway.

That was just them being them, though. Part of the reason it took over seven years for them to get together was because they kept flirting with each other without ever realizing that's what they were doing. Even now they were still a little blind to it.

"Yeah, sorry about that. I'll stop distracting your mother so much."

Well, he probably wouldn't stop distracting her, but he'd at least tone it down. For the moment.

"Yeah let's get those things fixed." Claire smirked a little, turning her attention back to her daughter and started in on her bangs again. She could ignore Leon to fix Sherry's hair.

"You know, next time you need a hair cut, just ask, okay?"

"Okay," Sherry agreed, and tried to helpfully keep her head straight. "After this, I'm going to go study with Vega and return the scissors, since I promised Stacy I would..."

Somehow, he managed to survive physical education, but still ignored his classwork. Well that wasn't happening, if she had anything to say about it.

Leon gave a slight look at the mention of that boy, but he didn't say anything about it.

"You borrowed the scissors from Stacy?"

Sherry's reply was punctuated by Claire's clipping, as it the little slips of hair fell down her face, "From." "Posse." "Possessions." Hah! "I... I said I'd... give it back."

After all, they didn't belong to her.

"In the future, just take a pair from my office if you needed some," he informed her. He had a wealth of sharp objects in the Precinct, some of which were useful for more than stabbing people.

"Your dad has sharp objects for every occasion," Claire added in, smirking a little, measuring Sherry's bangs out with her fingers.

"...That's pretty scary, Dad," Sherry raised her eyebrows and grinned a little. But, hey, if there were scissors in his desk, then she wouldn't have to worry about asking Stacy next time.

"Are they straight yet?" Pardon her impatience, Claire, but there are ~~boys she needs to see~~ things that require her to study them.

"Aaaalmost," she replied, a few more snips being applied before she held the scissors away from Sherry and leaned back to examine her handiwork. "Okay I think it's safe for you to go out in public, now."

She turned to her father, "Am I?" Not that she didn't have faith in her mother's assessment, of course, but Leon did have ~~ridiculously perfect~~ nice hair.

He was amused by her asking him for a second opinion.

"Don't worry, you're good." He wouldn't let her go out in public with bad hair. No one would believe she was his child if he did.

Claire smirked a little reaching out to ruffle Sherry's bangs (to shake out loose hairs, really) before holding the scissors out to the little girl.

"Remember. Next time, come find me."
