The blue unicorn gets a delighted laugh. Just like his Zord, but many times smaller!
"The unicorn's an old friend of mine," he says gently. "Follow me---there's something important that you don't know about me yet."
He leads Renne to the platform of colored lights and stands them both in the center, reaching out with his mind.
"I was born in the town of Angel Grove, a sunny urban city near the ocean. Over time, I developed an interest in science and became a 'nerd', as you described it. Other children thought my interests were strange, and they excluded me from their social group."
As he talks, Billy sees flashes of memory. The whir of machines, mocking laughter, and hour spent alone in the garage. Renne will hear all this, and perhaps catch the scents of grease, garbage, and tears.
"Miraculously, I eventually found friends." He thought of them one by one, the corresponding lights twinkling as he did so. Two red lights: one of solid patience, one of exuberance. Two yellow lights: one of serenity, one of spirit. Two black lights: one of joy, one of wisdom. A pink light of affection. A greenish-white light of penance tinged with courage. They smell like the breeze, a hot meal, the trees, and many other things, as appropriate. Overall, thoughts of them bring a warm sensation to him.
"Eventually, we were drafted together to fight a war against an empress seeking to conquer our planet." Flashes of Zordon and Alpha, the Command Center, the Rangers, and the Zords appear in quick succession. They smell like an alien happy feeling, the electric charge of power, and fresh energy. "The others were all skilled warriors---I was not. For a long time, they risked their lives and exhausted themselves protecting me in battle."
Memories of his clumsy first attempts at fighting appear, tinged with frustration and embarrassment. "At first, I thought I didn't fit in. But they were patient with me, and I worked hard to learn to defend myself too."
His triumph at finally advancing in karate. The thrill of winning a battle on his own. Other memories of his whole adventure trickle in: fear of being caught, anxiety when their families were in danger.
Billy bites his lip, waiting for the imp's reaction.
