This Man's Home Is A Castle [OPEN]

When he first saw it weeks ago, shortly after the crew had finally caught up him, he thought for certain that he was hallucinating. But there it was, nestled among several other castles. The Luthor Mansion, in all it's glory.

Lex was never a superstitious man, but even he believed that there was more to heaven and earth than what could be proven on paper. The appearance of his home, a reward no other crew member had received (to his knowledge), certainly made him think. He wondered if this was some sort of sign that his decisions so far had indeed been right, or that he was on the right path. Perhaps it was put there as a distraction of sorts, as well, as there were many unpleasant memories that haunted those walls. For the time being, he decided to take it as a reward, however relocating there initially proved to be problematic.

The Mansion wasn't in disarray, but it was clear that no one had walked its halls in quite some time. Not only that, but the last people who had clearly had little regard for the property. There was a layer of dirt and dust everywhere, expensive and priceless paintings had been torn off the walls and trashed, priceless artifacts were just broken pieces of clay or stone, pieces of antique furniture had been smashed, and every vault was empty. Not a single green meteor rock to be found. He counted himself lucky that his pool table, piano, and a handful of family photos managed to survive.

Rather than be dejected, Lex looked at it as project to occupy his time. Since he only worked in Neuropathy whenever he felt like it, and manned the bar in the lounge at his discretion, he did have plenty of time to devote to this project. Which was good, because cleaning up and fixing up a 40 room mansion-- replete with its own library (with real books), well supplied medieval armory and modern armory, pool, wine cellar, gym, and grand ballroom-- took a lot of work.

Work which still hadn't been completed, but he had progressed far enough to not only make it livable, but also presentable. The master bedroom, Lex's office, and most of the common areas had been cleaned up. All the rest was blocked off for the moment, but were in locations that were fairly out of the way.

So, he put out a message on the omnicomms, and invited a few people to check the place out. The ones who weren't already spying on him, at any rate. He laid out a few drinks, and a sampling of some of the fresh fruit and food he picked up while during their last mission to earth. He didn't expect many guests, after all, he had never been the most well liked person, even back when he was a relatively kindhearted kid. Most parties he hosted as an adult, he was usually surrounded by obsequious employees desperate to move up the food chain, business partners who wanted a more favorable deal, business rivals who were trying to find out something about the competition, charity representatives who wanted money, and sycophants who wanted the notoriety of being in the same room as Lex Luthor and access to the connections that alone can bring. Friends were simply a foreign concept, if he ever truly had any to begin with, and he certainly hadn't gone out of his way to make any on the ship. He was curious as to what category his guests, if he had any, would fit in.

((ooc: This is something of a party style post, so feel free to talk to Lex, Lois, or talk to each other while your character looks around.))

She smiles warmly. "Hey, don't worry about it! I'm really not doing anything a the moment, I promise - but you should do that, too."

"Well, if ye aren't doing anything, then I suppose I could stay," Jamie muses thoughtfully. "Although, I'm not so good with this..." He gestures around at the room in general. "It all seems verra weird."

Jamie doesn't go to a lot of formal parties.

"You mean the party? What's so weird about it?"

It's an honest, straightforward question - she's not being judgmental at all, merely curious to see where he's coming from.

Jamie's not entirely sure he can describe it. "Well, everyone's dressed verra fancy, to start." He's...not, really. "And the gatherings I've been to aren't usually in places this nice."

He's looking a little uncomfortable talking about it, but gamely continues. "I think it may just be that's different than what I'm used to."

She nodded, her expression entirely understanding. "Well, that makes sense - it's hard to get used to things being different. What sort of things would you be used to back home?"

"Och, well, to start, generally we're not inside a castle," Jamie comments dryly. "It'd be more like a wee pub. Much less formal, too. Ye could drink, of course." That part at least matches up. "But ye have music, and dancing, and sometimes people will get up and tell stories, if they like."

"All right, so..." Nanoha paused for a moment, as if in thought. "Well, I don't know about music or dancing, but why don't you tell me a story?"
bonnypiperlad: (hmm)

"Well...I'm not much of a story-teller, but I suppose I could tell ye the one about how the Wolf lost his tail." There's a distant look in Jamie's eyes as he thinks back to how the story begins.

"One day," he says, "The wolf and the fox were out together, and they stole a dish of crowdie. Now the wolf was the biggest beast of the two, and he had a long tail like a greyhound, and great teeth." Here he crooks his fingers to try and make them look like fearsome fangs.

"The fox was afraid of him, and did not dare to say a word when the wolf ate the most of the crowdie, and left only a little at the bottom of the dish for him, but he determined to punish him for it; so the next night when they were out together the fox said—" He clears his throat and adjusts his tone slightly so the fox sounds different than the narrator.

"'I smell a very nice cheese, and' (pointing to the moonshine on the ice) 'there it is too.'" Jamie gestures during the line about pointing, trying to indicate that the fox is referring to moonlight reflecting on the ice.

He changes his voice again, making it slightly gruffer and deeper. "'And how will you get it?' said the wolf. 'Well, stop you here till I see if the farmer is asleep, and if you keep your tail on it, nobody will see you or know that it is there. Keep it steady. I may be some time coming back.'"

Jamie seems to be getting into the story more as he continues to speak. "So the wolf lay down and laid his tail on the moonshine in the ice, and kept it for an hour till it was fast. Then the fox, who had been watching him, ran in to the farmer and said: 'The wolf is there; he will eat up the children, — the wolf! the wolf!'"

Finally, the story comes to its end. "Then the farmer and his wife came out with sticks to kill the wolf, but the wolf ran off leaving his tail behind him, and that’s why the wolf is stumpy-tailed to this day, though the fox has a long brush."

Jamie looks at Nanoha and adds, "I know the wolf isn't really stumpy-tailed, but ye can't really change that and still have it work in the story."

Nanoha is a very good listener, her attention completely on Jamie as he talks - and she smiles and chuckles at all the right places - and when he's finished, she applauds politely. "That was a great story! It's a good lesson, too - sometimes you don't always need to be the strongest to win, if you have brains and a plan! Just like the fox."

After a moment's thought, she continued. "Well, um... there are some dogs with stumpy tails, aren't there? Like bulldogs? You could use one of those!" She paused and then looked sheepish. "Though I think a farmer would like a dog better than a wolf, so maybe it doesn't work either."

Jamie ducks his head and tries not to look too sheepish when she says it was great. "Och, it's just something I was told when I was younger. But I suppose ye do have a point about it being a good lesson."

He shakes his head at the idea of using a bulldog, however. "A bulldog wouldna work well. The farmer wouldn't be afraid for his children." He's pretty sure the fox would still win, but it wouldn't have the same feel to it.

"Anyway, that's a wee bit more like what I'm used to." Interestingly, he does feel a little bit more at ease than he did a few minutes ago.

"Yeah, maybe a bulldog wasn't the best thing I could have chosen," Nanoha admitted with a shrug. "It was... kind of an on-the-spot thing. But that was nice! I don't mind hearing stories, you know - maybe other people here feel the same way."

"Mm," Jamie says, not entirely convinced. "I'm not sure. They seem like they're having a good time anyway." He looks over at the bar and the rather interesting situation going on there.

"Maybe I'll do something sometime where it'd work better."

"Aye," Jamie says with a smile. "I will."

He's quiet for a moment, then says, "Well, it was verra nice talking with ye, Nanoha, but I still need to find Lois." It's really the reason he showed up here in the first place.

"I owe her a present, after all."
starlightace: (Oh you silly bitch!)

"It was great to talk to you too!" Nanoha grins at him, shaking her head. "If you need to give her a present, then you should better find her - it's not good to leave a lady waiting, you know!"
bonnypiperlad: (hrmph)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-23 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Jamie snorts. "For a lady, she's verra fond of punching ye in the arm," he comments dryly.

"I'll see ye later, then." If for the flying, if nothing else. With a wave, he slips off back into the crowd.
