Guns and Ammo [Closed]
Sokka had been thrilled that Kelly was willing to teach him more about how to use the strange things they called guns, especially if it meant being more useful to the crew on missions. Besides the fact that he got to spend some time with a fun new friend, guns were just a lot of fun to shoot. Noisy, dangerous and absolutely thrilling. He paused outside of Kelly's room, than pressed the small button that acted as a doorbell. He rocked back on his heels for a moment as he waited for her to open the door. Kelly had better be in there, or he just hoofed it over here for nothing!

The door slid open quickly enough. Judging by her state of dress, or undress as the case was, she'd just gotten out of a shower. She had on a pair of cargo pants, and a blanket wrapped around the upper half of her torso, toga style.
"Hey Sokka. Come on in. Just give me a moment to get some clothes on and we'll be good to go." Once he was inside, she shut the door. When she turned around, Sokka would probably get a good view of the livid scars that adorned her body. Numerous burns, abrasions, cuts and surgery scars. Making her pale skin look like a veritable canvas of scar tissue.

Sokka was himself dressed in a pair of sandals, a blue t-shirt and cargo pants he'd selected from the clothing brought back from the mission. And of course the leather jacket she'd given and his omnipresent aviator sunglasses. Which promptly slipped down his nose when Kelly answered the door. The young man blushed awkwardly at the state of her dress, something he obviously hadn't been expecting. He managed a nod at her instructions and slid into the room to sit on the edge of the bed, trying not to stare too much at Kelly.
The fact that she was fairly attractive made it hard. The scars made it even harder. He coughed quietly and turned his attention to the ceiling, blushing like mad.
"Thanks...uh...thanks for agreeing to help me."
no subject
"No problem. What are friends for?" She shot him an easy smile over her shoulder. Her boots were already on, so she just faced away from him, probably just because her bag of clothes was there, dropped her towel and rummaged around, grabbing the appropriate underwear and sliding into it. Then she pulled on a tight fitting, sleeveless singlet and turned, brushing her hair out of her eyes.
"I'm good to go." If she'd noticed his staring, or his embarrassment, she didn't let on. Though odds were that she simply didn't understand the reasons for them.
no subject
"Ah...yeah! Let's go." Sokka bounced to his feet and headed out into the corridor, waiting for Kelly to join him before he set off towards the Sensoriums. He jammed his hands into his pockets, not quite used to the strange clothes yet. They weren't quite like anything he'd worn, note even in the Fire Nation.
"So. How've you been?" Awkward small talk is awkward?
no subject
"Busy. Helping organize the new supplies and clothes is a big job." She kept pace with him as they walked, not minding the small talk at all.

She was fully aware that in some cultures, boy became men far younger than in others. Maybe he was from one. Hell, the Spartan had had to grow up far quicker than most other children.
no subject
"I really like guns." He said lamely. "Uh...I mean. They're just so simple and easy. Don't have to spend nearly as much time as I do with my sword every day. Heh."
no subject
"Well they're a tool just like any weapon. The more time you spend with them, the better you'll be. Besides, the weapons are completely different. To effectively wield a sword you need far more skill than to simply fire a gun. Hence, the added practice. Though to be fair, if you practiced that much with a gun, I'm sure you'd get pretty good too." She smirked.

"So. Small arms or long arms?"
no subject
"Uh. Longarms, I think...that's what my shot gun is, right?"
no subject
"That's right. So you want to stick with that? Or try something a little different. A shotgun is good for close work, but sometimes, that isn't always the best way to fight. It depends on your surroundings really."
no subject
"What's the difference? They both shoot bullets, right?"
no subject
"No actually. A shotgun, while capable of firing a solid bullet, generally fires capsules filled with small pellets, known as a shell. Most other firearms don't. They fire solid projectiles encased in a shell with a charge at its base that ignites to propel the charge forward." She paused. "Generally, while they have a wide spread, shotgun don't propel their shot as far, and are pretty much useless in ranged encounters."

"This is an assault rifle. It has three modes of fire, single, burst fire, and fully automatic. Reasonably accurate in the first two modes, the third should be used only in emergencies, or once you're sure you can handle the recoil." Holding up the next weapon, "This is a Sub-Machine gun. Burst fire and fully automatic. Woefully inaccurate at long range, but reasonably effective at anywhere from short to middle range. Recoil is a bitch." And holding up the last weapon.
"This is a bolt action sniper rifle. The mechanism of this rifle means it needs to be reloaded after each shot. Making it a single shot weapon. Effective at anywhere from middle to extremely long range." She set the gun down and smiled.
"Now. What do you want to try first?" Yes Sokka, you're going to get to play with all of them.
no subject
"Uh. The assault rifle, I guess." He nodded at the weapon. He reached out to pick it up, cradling the gun in his arms. He was, of course, careful to keep it pointed down range, even if it lacked ammunition. After the Chief's lesson, he wasn't about to forget his range safety.
no subject
Sliding a magazine into her gun, she pulled the bolt back and let it snap forward, demonstrating how to load it. "Once that's done, the weapon won't need to be cocked again until you replace the magazine. A little different to a shotgun." She smiled.
no subject
"Okay."
no subject
She watched him, nodding approvingly when he got it right. He was a quick study. That was good. And he was paying attention, even better. Maybe she'd be able to mould him into a respectable fighter, yet. Not that he wasn't already well on the way by himself.
"So that switch next to you thumb is the safety. Flick it up to turn the safety off. Only do this when you're going to fire, all other times safety should be on. Even if the weapon is unloaded." She didn't kno how much experience he had with guns, so she'd start him with the basics. All the basics.
"Now, the switch just above the grip is the firing mode selector. We'll start on single fire." She shouldered her rifle and aimed downrange, taking a slow breath. "Now what you want to do, is line up the front and rear sights. Once the front sight perfectly fills up the notch in the rear sight you're lined up. Once you've got that down why don't you try a shot? And make sure you've got a good grip on it, though the recoil probably isn't as bad as your pump gun."
no subject
Crack. The rifle was light, and the recoil wasn't anywhere near as bad as the pump gun. In fact, it seemed fairly simple to control. He fired another shot. Than another. Simple.
no subject
Once she was done, she set her rifle down and leaned back against the booth, watching him shoot until he was done. He seemed to take naturally to the weapon. Hmm.
no subject
After he'd fired his last shot, he safed the weapon again. He pulled the magazine from it as well, after a moment or two of trying to figure out which button to press to retrieve it. He set his own rifle down and turned to Kelly, a wide grin on his face.
"That wasn't too hard. It was pretty fun, actually..."
no subject
She laughed quietly when he turned with that look on his face. Really, she'd never seen someone so enthusiastic about the weapons before. She was glad he was taking to them. Though really, she wondered if he could have killed with them if it came to it.
"That's just the beginning. You've still got a lot more to learn." She smirked, as she hit the button to bring the target close to them. Once they arrived, Sokka would notice that her shots were all grouped neatly in the center of her target.
no subject
"...I guess I need practice, huh?" all of his were on the target, which was about the nicest thing you could cay for him. A few were near the center, but most were scattered across the target haphazardly. He frowned.
"I'll get it. Eventually. I'll just have to do more shooting, I guess."
no subject
"It does help." She smiled at him. "The more experience you get, the easier it'll be to put the shots where you want them. Just a tip though, try to exhale with every shot. It goes a long way toward steadying your aim." She didn't laugh at his shots, or even seem too amused by them. She knew well enough not to discourage him, even with that much. All he needed was practice, and she was sure he could do it.
"That's a good attitude to have. You can never get too much practice."
no subject
"But yeah. Practice is very important. No matter what weapon you're using." Sokka seemed a bit distracted now, probably by thoughts of home and what he'd had to do.
"I need to get in more practice with my spear and war club...been concentrating a lot on my sword lately."
no subject
"That's definitely right. There's no point being mediocre. There's a greater chance you'll mess up when you can't afford to." She noticed the distraction, but chose not to comment. Everyone had things to be distracted about these days.
"Well, mastering one weapon isn't so bad. It's better than been less than average with a lot of them. If your strength is the sword, it only makes sense to spend more time it."
no subject
"Well, yeah. But I think it's good to be versatile. And since I have nothing but free time, I might as well get better with my weapons, right?" Sokka shrugged and picked up one of the SMGs, looking the weapon over. It looked like one of the rifles he'd used before, but smaller, almost like a miniature version of those larger weapons.
"But I do want to master the sword. I want to make Piandao proud of me. If I ever see him again..."
no subject
"Definitely. Though I still recommend not spreading yourself too thin. Having a working knowledge of the weapons in the event that you're required to use them is advisable. But trying to master them all? Well, sure in time. But I'd start with one." She chuckled, picking up an SMG of her own. Sliding its magazine home, she easily spun the weapon before catching its grip.
"I'm sure he'd be plenty proud. And of course you'll see him again. D'you think I'd let these Ohm bastards really take it all away from us?"
no subject
no subject
"Exactly." She smirked when he shook his hand like that. She wasn't all that solid. She was still made of flesh after all. Maybe he'd just hit a bone. That would probably explain it. Watching him take up his firing position, she cocked her own SMG and raised it, one-handed at the target, holding down the trigger until the magazine clicked empty, hardly batting an eye at the gun's report and recoil
This time, she didn't even need to pull her target in, the entire bottom half of it was missing.
no subject
"That one was fun." He grinned.
no subject
She couldn't help but grin at him. She couldn't remember ever having been so enthusiastic about her own gun training before. But then, maybe that was due to the way she'd been trained. Chief Mendez hadn't exactly made training a 'fun' experience, though she'd gloried in ever second of it. Once she'd gotten used to it anyway.
"Wanna see how you did?" She smirked, pulling in his target so they could get a good look at it.
no subject
"I definitely need more practice..."
no subject
She looked at his target. His groups were incrementally closer. But maybe he just need a little more help. Pausing for a moment, she tilted her head, before reloading her SMG and moving into his booth. "Here, let me help you a little."
She offered him the gun, taking up position behind him. Bending down, close to his ear so she could see what he saw, her arms came up around his, hands covering his to adjust his grip on the gun. "If you hold it like this, it'll be easier to control."
She spoke quietly, mindful of how close she was to his ear. What is this personal space of which you speak? Really, it wasn't something she would usually have done, but it was the most efficient way to teach him.
no subject
Sokka felt his face grow a bit warmer as Kelly leaned over him, her hands guiding his. He swallowed nervously, then nodded. Think...Think of Suki. Think of what she'd do if you were thinking those kinds of thoughts. He closed his eyes, shook his head, than sighted down the weapon again.
"R-Right. Hold it like this."
no subject
She leaned a little closer, completely missing his blushing as she sighted down the weapon along with him. The target at the end of the range seemed to jump out at her as she focused on it, her voice taking on a hushed tone as she spoke, as if she were telling him some sort of secret.
"Now squeeze the trigger, don't pull it. Remember to exhale as you fire, and keep your shoulders tensed to absorb the impact." A smile flickered across her face as she remembered her own gun training.
no subject
"Squeeze the trigger. Don't pull..." He murmured, repeating her words. Okay. Focus on the firearm. Focus on the target. He took in a deep breath, focusing his mind to ignore all distractions, then slowly squeezed the trigger, sending a burst down the range. Then another. And another.
no subject
She didn't pull her hands away, helping him keep the gun steady as he fired. Not to mollycoddle him, but so he could get the feel of what it should feel like to handle the gun the right way. If could remember that, he'd definitely have it easier in the future. When the magazine clicked empty, she slid the gun out of his hands, pulling the empty mag and setting it aside, before reflexively clearing the chamber and setting the weapon down, all this of course, done in one fluid motion.
She pulled the target in to show him his new groups, now much closer together and nearer the center of the target. "See? It's not so hard." She smiled ah him.
no subject
"Awesome. I bet I'll have it down in no time, yeah?" He grinned at the taller woman, shifting his stance a little as they spoke.
"Thanks for your help..."
no subject
"Definitely. Just keep practicing." She grinned at him in return.
"Hey, if it helps you survive out there? That'll be thanks enough."
no subject
"We should do this again sometime."
