Bene Gesserits for Dummies
The day after the Hannukah celebration, Katara had time to think about the last twenty four hours. The idea of a challenge, the training Sheeana was taking about, was still fresh in her mind. There was no avoiding it: she WANTED to be a Bene Gesserit, wanted to be trained well enough that she could move as the Mother did. She didn't know how enthusiastic she had seemed then, but she had even replaced one of her usual Yoga practices with trying to move a limb independent of all other: to no avail, sadly, but she was getting closer, she knew that well enough, but it wasn't enough for her to do the exercises, she wanted to know more about them too. So naturally, the Media library was the best place to go.
She made her way to the place and poured through the material, avoiding several interesting books about martial arts and looked up specific sisterhood paths. There were several interesting goddess ones she wanted to research later, and one called "Dianic Wicca" that would probably have bothered Sokka, but she was finally at the Bene Gesserit, and engrossed herself in her readings.
Thus spoke St. Alia-of-the-Knife: "The Reverend Mother must combine the seductive wiles of a courtesan with the untouchable majesty of a virgin goddess, holding these attributes in tension so long as the powers of her youth endure. For when youth and beauty have gone, she will find that the place-between, once occupied by tension, has become a wellspring of cunning and resourcefulness."
"Interesting," Katara said to herself aloud, reading on.

The waterbender looked thoughtful. "Really? I usually wind up talking about myself first thing with people, just because it tends to get long. Now I sound conceited though." She grinned. "Waht do you want to know?"

"Well, the thing to understand firstly is how the nations learned to bend. The Earthbenders learned from Badger moles, the Firenation from the dragons, nd the air nomads from the Sky Bison. Waterbenders are the only ones who didn't learn their bendeing from any animal: they learned from the moon. Watching how the moon managed the tides, the waterbenders learned the push and pull, and from there we became a people. Once I think we were all united, but then some benders started to break away from certain traditions, like women only being able to bend for healing and arranged marriages and things. So the Northern waterbenders kept their stupid chauvinist but honored traditions, and the other benders moved to the South pole to form the Southern water tribe, which had both male and female benders. Since then we've shrunk considerably...the Fire Nation saw to that."
There was a note of bitterness in her voice.

She sighed. "And because of that, I wound up playing mommy to my big brother for a while. Dad was gone, and mom wasn't around anymore to take care of us. That was all before we met Aang, of course."

She smiled at Tess. The closer contact felt comforting: it was something she would have done too. "So you have a lot of family? I'd like to hear about them, if you don't mind."

Katara smiled a little. "I'm starting to get why you wanted to become one though. I never actually decided like you did, since it was more thrust on me, but I want to go, I know that."

But she was glad Tess became a grasshopper after all. Someone like Tess didn't seem like the type who wanted to only stay in one place for a long time.

Here though, Katara was interested, especially in histories she didn't know a lot about. " Could you tell me more about him, if you know anything?"

Maybe if she wasn't a waterbender she might become an archeologist.
"What are jumpers?"

"Is that what started the grasshoppers?" Katara asked.

Tess' lips twist in a little thought. "I wish I could give you a lookit what it's like..."

Katara had even tried flying, and it was fun...until she got that bug in her mouth.
