Greet the (New) Meat! (no, don't eat them!)

By hook or by crook or by avoiding hook and crook, the crew assembled from the previous podpops eventually made it up to the Living Area to greet their new crew mates. The creepy sculpture was also there, though less to greet them than it was always there.

The strange, fleshy seating had multiplied. You really, really don't want to know how.

"I'd have enjoyed working in a secure laboratory, but my only options were the makeshift lab in my garage or the great outdoors. Most of the space in the garage was occupied by the RadBug, my airborne automobile. It was in need of maintenance when I left." There's a wistful look in his eyes. Even Billy can't escape the primal bond of a man and his car. Well, to be fair, it was a special car.

Billy just nods mutely in regards to Allen's opinions on Stacy's rules. He's not exactly the subversive type, and even if he were, he believes Stacy is monitoring every conversation and would be wary of discussing plans like that. But his determination's admirable!

Oh hey, there's a safer topic! "I mentioned my inventions before. I've worked with electronics, communications systems, environmental analysis, and simple mechanical devices, in addition to the flying car. I attempted to build a thought transfer device that would emulate 'mind-reading', but it malfunctioned and caused my friend Kim and I to switch bodies. That was a unique experience."

"I've also taken to studying chemistry, but I'm far from an expert in the field. I manage the Science Club at school, so I'm expected to be knowledgeable in all fields and tutor the other students. Biology's my weakness, though."

"You're still in high school?" Allen peers at Billy thoughtfully. "I would've thought college, at least. Especially if you're working on a flying car. Nice, very nice. Wanna share ideas? I'm working on making my DeLorean fly."

The primal bond is echoed in Allen's expression. What red-blooded man doesn't love his soon-to-be-airborne DeLorean?

"Wow." And that leads to an entirely inappropriate line of thought, and Allen has to spend a good second or two ordering himself not to ask if Billy used that opportunity to look at the Pink Ranger naked. "That sounds . . . wacky." Power Rangers are pure and After School Special! Even if Kimberly was Allen's first love, succeeded a few years later by Xena.

"And awkward." He scratches the back of his head. "Well hey, don't let this get in the way of your intellectual pursuits. There's a media library with pretty much every biology textbook you could ever want, with the option to list them in terms of accuracy." He knocks gently on one of the meatwalls. "Who better to teach biology than a meatship?"

"I'd have to look at the schematics, but I'm sure it would be possible. It's difficult for me to find time to test drive it, though, considering all the precautions I have to take to avoid detection. I'd either have to sell my technology to a corporation or fall under suspicion if anyone saw it, and I don't want either."

Billy drifted back into his memories for a moment. He and Kim hadn't been able to face each other for a few days because they had changed clothing. They didn't quite feel comfortable without at least some article of clothing in their Ranger color. This made Billy sorely wish that the pulsating leafwraps came in blue. "Awkward doesn't even begin to encompass that situation. The bugs were worked out, but I put that particular experiment on hiatus."

That reminder about the library resulted in what might just be Billy's biggest smile yet. "That's very true. I'll have to locate the library as soon as possible and resume my studies. Does it cover other subjects as well?"

"Why suspicion? Corporations pay big."

Not that Allen has sold out. Not all that badly, anyway. Enough to buy his beautiful wife an equally beautiful house, and a pony, which is not horrible.

"Eh, I think telepathy is somewhat over-rated. Would you really want to know what people were thinking about you? You might hear some uncomfortable things." Like that you're from a 90's television show!

Allen sees Billy's smile and counters with one of his own. "Dude, follow me. I will show you the way myself. As far as I can tell the computers will tell you anything except the history of this ship or region, and it keeps Stacy's diagnostics to itself, naturally. But as far as the sciences go? Dude. Alien physics." If his grin gets any wider, his face is going to split. "How often do you get to see that? I mean seriously. And if you need help with bio, I can tutor you. I've got a Masters in bio."

He turns to walk down a fleshy hall, waving for Billy to follow him. "Plus, there's Guitar Hero. What year are you from? Have you gotten Guitar Hero yet?"

"The possibilities seem almost endless from here. I'd appreciate your assistance as well, if it's needed." His imagination's providing examples of just what some of those alien physics might involve. Excited, he sets off on the path with Allen.

Billy's not really a video game enthusiast, and if he does have anything, it's more than likely a Super Nintendo. "I'm from 1994, and negative. What is this Guitar Hero?"

"Only the greatest video game ever invented by a human!" because Allen has only recently conceived of the number of video games he now has access to which were invented by aliens to reserve the 'best ever' blanket categorization for a human game. "I'm from 2010, and no, we don't jetpack to work. Unfortunately."

"Viable jetpacks are still evading us in 2010? That's unfortunate." He cracks a small smile at that. What he fails to mention, of course, is that there are workable jetpacks in 1994. They're just the domain of the Power Rangers.

"It's been a while since I've tried a video game. I'm assuming it utilizes music?" Yeah, Bill's not really a music guy. He has much to learn from the master.
