Building a family [hella open]

Slobo had been puttering around the ship for an hour, thinking and looking. He quickly found that if you looked hard enough, between W&P and the City itself, you could find anything. In the end, he was standing outside a Courtyard by Marriott hotel about a click outside of "Escherville" with spraypaint and a very large block of stone. At first he had thought about the Vatican, but it was too wrecked from the zombie fight. Plus, this place had an indoor pool. He spraypainted a large message on the wall next to the door, red with black outline.
"OUTSIDERS
COMMUNITY SERVICE
FIELD TRAINING
PEER COUNSELING

On the sandwich board tucked near the door, he wrote "12-21? Info and Tryouts inside" and left it out in front. Now, he took his large rock into the lobby and began carving. And waited.

The strange limitations the ship had placed on her and Raising Heart meant that she was limited to the weakest of her aerial fins, but she was still more than capable of keeping up with him for the moment as she followed him out into the open.

It felt nice to fly.

"Alright, open 'er up and let's see what you can do." He gestured ahead of himself, standing up straight on his disk, before crossing his arms. "The lead's all yours."

Nanoha straightened up in midair to give the boy a teasing grin. "All right. I'll try not to get too far ahead of you."

In the next instant, she fell out of the sky, turning in mid-air so that she was facing toward the ground as she plummeted earthward, faster than if she'd just let gravity take her. Nanoha pulled out of the dive in time to avoid face-planting on the pavement, using her momentum to head toward the larger buildings of the city.

Static twisted his board to follow her decent, hanging onto it only through the power of magnetism. He grinned as he followed her, upside down until all the blood had rushed into his head.
starlightace: (Woo hoo!)

The rush of wind past her face was exhilarating, and she hadn't realized how much she'd missed just being able to fly like this - there was a bright smile on her face. Nanoha turned a corner to head toward a cylindrical skyscraper, and then turned to ascend straight upward, seeing how close she could skim to the concrete without touching it.

"Very impressive. Tight control, looks like you've had plenty of practice." Static followed her lead to the letter, using just the tiniest charge to keep the disc from colliding with the building. He crouched back down. "Speed test?" Static took off in front of her, as fast as he could go.

Here, it was clear that he had a bit of an advantage over her, especially with her flight limited the way it was. Though that didn't make keeping up with him impossible ... the Axel Fin was like a second gear on a bicycle - she didn't need it to go as fast, but it made it take significantly less effort.

Still, Nanoha was determined to try to keep up with him as best as she could.

Static turned his disk around so he was flying backwards and could check on her. She was definitely fast; On a ship with as much ambient energy as this one, Static was rocking an almost permanent full charge (unless he did zainy things like get involved with crazy death-machine AIs or pirates), so he had a serious advantage. But, it'd let him see how long she could hold up. It was looking like she'd be great in the field. She had also said something about teaching...

He dropped straight down about half a mile, then hit the full reverse, heading back towards what Slobo had already dubbed 'Outsiders Palace'.

"Your speed's pretty good, I gotta admit. Now, let's see your reflexes." He didn't slow down at all, but began to fire off small bursts of electricity. There was plenty of time between bolts, and they were a small enough charge that they would barely even stun her, but it would smart for a bit if she did get hit.
starlightace: (Oh?)

It was difficult to keep this speed up with just the Flier Fin and dodge Static's attacks, and for a moment Nanoha was tempted to just throw up a Barrier to do the job for her, but... no, that would be hypocritical of her as a teacher, wouldn't it? There were times to think outside the box, and times when following the test served its purpose.

In order to save energy to keep her pursuit up, she moved the barest minimum necessary to dodge his zaps - some of them came close, but none of them connected thus far.

She was smart;conserved her movements. Static has one last thing to do to test her, then he'd be out of ideas. He concentrated his energy between his hands, creating a ball of electricity. When he sent it out, it'd expand like a net; she'd either have to dodge really wide, or have some way to block it. Of course, even if she didn't, by the time it got to her, the energy would be spread out enough not to really hurt... It may be a test, but he wasn't going to injure her.

So he sent the ball.

Nanoha had thrown her own students curveballs enough times to recognize a change in test when she saw one. Despite the wind rushing past their ears, Static might hear a synthetic female voice speak up: "Round Shield."

A flat circle of magenta energy appeared in front of her to catch the electric net and dissipate it harmlessly before fading away.

"Very nice!" Static clapped as he slowed down, letting her catch up. "Alright, so, now I know a bit better what you can do; I'd definitely like to have you on our field team, and maybe teaching a bit too, if you're so inclined. Thanks a bunch for the nice flight; I was needing a good stress reliever." He smiled and turned, heading down towards the 'palace' entrance.
starlightace: (Softly spoken)

[personal profile] starlightace 2009-11-12 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
She returned the smile. "I'm happy to help however I can. ...and don't mention it. It's been a while since I've flown like that. I missed it more than I knew."

When he turned to leave, Nanoha followed - might as well meet some of the others, right?

"Being grounded does that to ya..." Static jumped off his board a few feet above the ground in front of the palace. He grabbed and re-folded his board (fun with magnetics!), tucked it into the jacket, and started inside. "I've got to get back to work; I'm trying to get the building systems back online for unlocking all the rooms so people can have actual privacy, and I still need to write up a proposal to the Captain. Feel free to take a look around, though, and pick out a room to call your own."

The wings faded from view as Nanoha touched to the ground, still curious about how exactly the board operated. "All right - I can find my own way around. It was nice to meet you, Static."
