Phase 1 - Left Behind - The Vatican: Fortifying the Fort?

The Vatican had a lot of ground to cover. Normally covered in expansive gardens (just empty plots on the ship) and comprised of a multitude of buildings, holing up there meant holing up in simply a part of the Vatican. The group was therefore in St. Peter's Basilica, which had had most of its entrances sealed off. Now they had to work on small windows and a few other entrances left neglected, but overall, it was a very defensible position. There were no exits other than the ones leading to the sacristy and treasury--which was their main avenue of escape, and heavily guarded. The prisoners were being kept in this area, and guarded by the rear guards, as leaving them in the prison was deemed too dangerous for their safety. As bad as they'd been with the Yeerk conflict, they were crew, and no one wanted them to die.

The courtyard was a chokepoint. Gunners could sit on the roofs of the buildings running alongside the courtyard to strafe St. Peter's square from the sides.

The various chapels and vestibules along the sides made excellent areas for food, medical, and weapons supplies to be gathered, and most were clustered in the middle of the basilica. The Medical area was in the Chapel of the Column, the main weapons and ammo caches, and Food storage areas were in the two Transepts, respectively, to the sides of the Papal altar. Pews all in the main areas had been converted to sleeping areas, right in the center of the whole place.

There was still work to be done, before the other group could leave. Last minute barricades, blocking more windows, moving the last of the medical supplies, inventorying the food, and so on. Then it would be time to hunker down.

So push up your sleeves and lend someone else a hand, folks.

Will's pixie wings don't let her fly. But she's a lot stronger in her Guardian form, and people are more inclined to listen to her and not treat her like one of the little kids when she's in it. So some people might not recognize the red-haired, pixie-winged woman who's pushing pews around and looking for faces that need reassurance, but to be fair, a lot of people probably never noticed Will in her normal form to begin with.

All the while, she's looking around for people who are scared, nervous. She's trying not to be one of them. It's easier when she's like this - more powerful, more sure of herself. She can extend a little of that surety around, even if she can't fly.

Duncan doesn't mind being in the thick of things...hand to hand combat is what he's best at anyway. He doesn't mind volunteering.

With some hard work and some help from Luly, RObert had managed to set up quite a nice little next on the roof of the Basilica. Sandbags taken from the armory gave him protection, and he had set up the browning with a sweeping field of fire to cover almost any part of the open square, set up his ammo, made sure his back up weapon (his rifle) was close at hand and Rob had even walked the courtyard in order to make sure his range estimates were correct. Now all he had to do was wait.

Rob needed volunteers. He clambered up on one of the disassembled pews and waved a hand.

"Hey! I need an assistant gunner, maybe two for the thirty cal I set up on the roof! Anyone wanna learn how to use a machine gun?" That might get some attention, at least.

Roxie is doing something odd: finding out-of-the-way spots and hiding little things in them that look like staple removers twisted in with many paper clips to look like little artificial spiders. With each goes a little paper note: 'DANGEROUS, DO NOT TOUCH'.

[identity profile] its-keeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
It looks occulty, but most of the things Roxie does look so. She comes over, curious.

"What are you making?"

Ellen still wasn't used to the ship. Or the suit she wore. Somehow, she'd managed to find her lab coat in the W&P and had it on over the plantsuit. It wasn't much, but it was something. Her hair was tied back and her gun strapped to her leg under the coat, hopefully she wouldn't need to use it. When the moving had started she'd just let herself be herded and followed, feeling generally a little put out and confused. She hadn't really been able to find out what was going on but she knew it had something to do with getting off the ship. Another team was already off somewhere else.

And so, being left here, she decided to at least make herself useful. She felt desire to guard prisoners, set up gunner positions, or comfort the frightened. So she'd gone to the one place that at least felt somewhat familiar, the Medbay Area. Casting an eye toward the children, she looked around at the other occupants of the Medbay and wrinkled her nose slightly. She wasn't in command. But she's be damned if that would keep her from helping.

"Does anyone know who's in charge here?"

Sharp Tongue, who is carefully organizing her own medical instruments (by which I mean messy array of creepy-looking primitive tools) in a corner, looks up.

The raptor snorts.

"As I have not been bitten or shouted at yet, for all I know it may well be me," she says with biting sarcasm.

That would be one Lois Lane, currently rifling through a med kit so she knows exactly where everything is. If she didn't know where everything was, she wouldn't know where to reach in a crisis, and while she is generally happy to put herself in trouble just to dig herself out again, this was not one of those fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants scenarios she wanted to muck up.

An armed doctor-looking woman? Awesome. An armed doctor-looking raptor? She needed a drink, but alright.

"That'd be me," Lois replied, looking up and setting down whatever she had in hand. She glanced between the two. "Lois Lane. Jaime put me in charge here."

Blinking at the raptor, Ellen opened her mouth as if to say something, then snapped it shut. Yeah, she really had no comeback. Specially when the one who'd just snarked at her was a freakin' dinosaur.

When the young woman spoke up, Ellen walked over and held out her hand, offered a tight smile. "Ellen Anders. I'm not a doctor per se, but I have more than rudimentary knowledge of medicine. Anything I can do help, Ms. Lane?"

Jaime? That must have been the kid who'd called that meeting. She'd stayed out of the way as much as she could at that one.

Olivia finds herself at the ammo supplies. Looking around, she notices the disorganization of it all. Perhaps the person in charge of this could do with a bit of help. Gauron. That's what had been said in the speech.

"Excuse me? Gauron?" she calls out.

"They're kind of a warning system," Roxie comments, glancing over at Will as she straightens up from sliding one into place in a side nook. "If I've set it up right, they'll start to wake up as any intruders approach. And they might be able to do a little damage, too."

[identity profile] its-keeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Good. Is there any way I can help?"

Roxie's magic is different from hers, but she has a lot of power to offer.

"The more evenly I have these spread out, the better they'll share their senses."

She pulls a plastic grocery bag from under her jacket (wait, how'd it fit in there, anyway?). It's full of at least another two or three dozen of the things, already put together. It seems like it must have taken a lot of work to get all those paperclips arranged like that...

"But don't let any of them taste blood. That could be bad."

Lois took it, and shook, firmly. Her own smile was tight, too, wound up with a lot of nervous energy that she was firmly channeling into business mode.

"Ellen. Good, because a medbay isn't a medbay without medics, full-blown licensed practitioners or not. Right now, we just have to make sure this place is set up for the worst case scenario," she explained. "In case something decides to get PAST the blockade out there, this chapel needs to be ready to worship the gods of firepower."

And then she gestured at the kidlets, with her thumb.

"And we've got to keep them out of trouble. Probably easier said than done, but worse comes to worse, we can have Chomper here scare them into cooling it."

At the moment, Jamie is occupied in helping to board up the smaller windows and doing some of the other general labor that needs to be done. He doesn't actually mind doing the work, so he's willing to go wherever he's directed. It's also keeping him from thinking too much, which he considers to be a nice side benefit.

[identity profile] its-keeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't plan on bleeding anytime soon, so she takes the bag without hesitating. "Why, what will happen?"
