Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

Hey there. There's a rather dubious-looking Sheikah lurking watching curiously from a distance.

Finally, he approaches - they're not like anything he's seen in Hyrule. But then, a lot of things in this place aren't.

"What are those?" he asks curiously, pointing at the omnicoms.

"Those are omnicoms," Jeka said. "They're personal computing devices that link up to the other ones on board and allow you to communicate with other people on the ship." She held one out to Sheik, along with one of the rings. "The ring is a verbal communicator, which allows you to communicate verbally with the rest of the crew."

The ring is a little more straightforward, and he slips it on (it's sized almost perfectly, which means it'll be too big for Zelda, but oh well), but the omnicoms... not so much. "A... computing device?" he frowns, poking at it, "How does it work?"

And what's a computing device, anyway?

There is an eyeroll, Brainy starts to open his mouth--

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
--But before anything could come out, Jeka was pointedly pressing an elbow against Brainy's ribcage.

"It's a highly advanced machine that allows you to communicate with other people and record your own thoughts, among many, many other things."

Hey, not his fault that Hyrule doesn't have any technology more advanced than oil lanterns!

On the other hand, neon lights at the Bombchu Bowling Alley...

"Mmhm." A non-committal sound as Sheik continues to fiddle with out. "How do you do that?"

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeka slithered around to Sheik's side, pressing a few buttons on the omnicom in his hand. "This lets you record your own thoughts, like a diary or a note pad. This," she pressed a few more buttons, "allows you to communicate with the rest of the crew. You can send a message to everyone on the crew, or to a specific person. What is your name, so we can add you to the contact list?"
redeyes_andblue: (S - confused: what next?)

Sheik watches closely, taking in the little details - it's utterly unfamiliar, but then, utterly unfamiliar things are a constant in his life.

"My name is Sheik," he tells the woman, still half-focused on the omnicom. It occurs to him, then, that Zelda would have difficulties using it, if it's under his name, but they can cross that bridge when they come to it.

"And how do the rings work?"

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Jeka pressed a few buttons and showed Sheik the screen. "Here, this is the place where you put your name so that other people can send you private messages. Would you like to do it or shall I?"

"The rings are very simple to use," she said. "You just need to think of the name of the person or persons you want to contact, and then the message that you want to send. Or you can do the same thing, verbally."
redeyes_andblue: (S - small smile: you're not too bad)

[personal profile] redeyes_andblue 2009-10-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sheik nods - the rings certainly sound more straightforward than the omnicoms, at least.

"I can do it," he says softly - if nothing else, the letters on the screen are in Hylian, and he doubts the woman would know them. Keying them in, he then glances up at her, a faint smile on his face. "Thank you. What was your name?"

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
"My name is Jeka Wynzorr, and my codename is Sensor," Jeka said. "The ship translates all of the messages and conversations, so you don't need to worry about people not understanding you, or you not understanding them."
redeyes_andblue: (S - small smile: well then)

[personal profile] redeyes_andblue 2009-10-05 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Jeka," Sheik repeats, and nods. "Thank you - I appreciate this. The place I come from doesn't have anything like these."

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
"You're quite welcome," Jeka said. "If you need help, you can come to me, or you can ask Allen Gentry or Billy Cranston -- they helped build the omnicoms, so they know how they work."

Both Brainies had worked on the omnicoms as well, but it would undoubtedly be for the best to not have either of them on Tech Help duty.
redeyes_andblue: (S - small smile: well then)

[personal profile] redeyes_andblue 2009-10-05 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I will do that," he nods, thanks Jeka again, and starts off to explore this place further.
