Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

"You're onboard Stacy, who is a giant organic psychic transdimensional spaceship. You've kind of been... kidnapped by Stacy, or at least the people we think are in charge of her. Did she mention a Great Purpose to you at all?" Well, Wyn might as well start with the hardest facts to grasp: kidnapping by meatship. "Oh, and I'm Wyn. Nice to meet you, Agent..." she adds, almost as an afterthought.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-02 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
An Organic. Psychic. Transdimensional. Spaceship. And she had been kidnapped by it. This was right up Walter's alley. It was not right up Olivia's. Somehow it wasn't surprising, though. She had already been somewhere, so why not go again? Olivia's voice gained a slightly hysterical edge to it. "Yes, there was a Great Purpose. She didn't say what, but she said there was one." She paused, distracted, before suddenly returning to the conversation. "Dunham. Agent Olivia Dunham. Nice to meet you, Wyn."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wyn ascribes to the band-aid school of telling the newbies what's going on: rip the band-aid of their ignorance off as fast as possible and then give them time to adjust. ... Olivia might need a bit more time to adjust. "Well, the common theory behind the whole Great Purpose thing is that we've been drafted... conscripted? Is that the word?" Wyn says, trailing off distractedly. (To be fair, she's not speaking her first language.) "Anyway, we don't know what we've been drafted for, exactly, except that it involves omnicidal aliens called the Ohm, and I'm pretty sure it's 'ohm' like the unit of measure."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Right. Ohm. What is that the unit for?" She could always ask more questions. It was what she usually did when Walter proposed some absurd idea. "And from what you're saying, conscripted sounds like the right word." Somehow it didn't seem so unrealistic. "Is it a bad thing that I'm not entirely skeptical and unbelieving?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Electrical resistance. I mean, I think it's just a coincidence, but it's not exactly a name that strikes terror into the hearts of your enemies." Wyn says with a shrug. "Oh, good. English is confusing sometimes, and Stacy translates and everything but given the sheer concentration of Yanks onboard I thought I might as well just speak English and save her the trouble."

"... and not necessarily. There's a level of weirdness where you literally could not make all this up if you tried. For most people, Stacy's at that level." And there's an implication there that Wyn's weirdness-quotient is a lot higher than most people's, but at least she's trying to be helpful.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Actually, it's not so much that it's too weird, it just oddly realistic. It's like all the questions that have been building up have connected." She paused, lost in thought. 'Thus the Soldier to come is both natural and, fairly, unnatural.' If they were soldiers here, it would fit. There was certainly something natural here, but unnatural as well. It was all starting to make sense, but it was off still. Not quite right. "Was I meant to come here?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
... well, this conversation has officially thrown Wyn for a loop. "Questions about what?" she asks after a moment. "You were if you believe Stacy, but her information can be a little bit... suspect sometimes. And I think it depends on whether or not you believe the timeline's fixed, but that's getting into metaphysics and I much prefer regular physics because at least in physics things make sense."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Back where I'm from, things keep happening. I've already been somewhere and come back. I was missing for over an hour. I know there are other realities out there. That there's a war to come. That's what I've been trying to solve. What's going on. And Stacy... this ship is pretty much the gathering of everything for me." She paused. "But it's also not. It's just... not quite right. Like it's just a coincidence." A thought came to her. "I haven't been here before, have I?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well. Saves me having to explain the parallel universe theory." Wyn says, her lopsided smile hopefully explaining to Agent Dunham that it was mostly a joke. "And it could be just a coincidence, for all we know, although Stacy tends to yank people with special skills or powersets or knowledge or what-have-you. Maybe what you know about the war is relevant to what happens here."

Wyn bites her lip thoughtfully. "Not that I know of." There have been instances of people disappearing from all records and even from peoples' memories onboard Stacy, but Wyn's pretty certain that the woman she's talking to isn't one of them.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I think I certainly fit into that category. I'd... appreciate it if you kept this quiet, though. I'm still, ah, not sure about any of it yet." Olivia gave a tight sort of smile and shifted to put weight on her right leg before quickly replacing it on her left. "So... is there anything else extraordinary about this place?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"The 'special knowledge' category or the 'superpowers' category?" Wyn asks, glancing at the cane quickly (and not surreptitiously at all; Wyn is many things, but subtle is not one of them). "And that's no problem, although if you do piece it together later, talking to the Command Staff might not be a bad idea."

"Hmm... well, Batman's here. And Captain Picard punched a velociraptor a couple of podpops ago." Wyn says, grinning brightly. She sees it as her sacred duty to ensure that the velociraptor story gets spread to as many of the newbies as possible.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm, I'd say more the latter. Though I'm not much good for combat of late, as you can see. And who is on the Command Staff?"

While Peter had decided to make a deal out of the mad who thought he was Spock back home, Olivia just decided to store such details. Though the second part warrented a comment. "A velociraptor?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm on Engineering, which should tell you everything you need to know about which end of the spectrum I'm on." Wyn says with a slightly self-effacing grin. "And the command staff is Captain Picard, Captain Kirk-- Shatner-Kirk, not new-movie-Kirk-- Billy and Allen, technically, because they're heads of Engineering, um... Dr. Grey, I think, Master Chief, and Cybil. I might be missing a few people, though." Yep. The Command Staff is full of fictional people.

"Yeah, a velociraptor. There are two of them, actually, and they talk. ... and this particular one is very attached to his rifle."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I met Mr. Gentry earlier. And I can't help but notice that you keep mentioning fictional characters as if they're real. I would suppose this is on purpose." She decided it was time to clear that up, and saved that particular velociraptor detail for later along with all the names. She was good at that, though numbers were even easier to remember.

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"It's part of that whole 'transdimensional' thing. In some universe, somewhere, just about everything people on my Earth-- and I'm assuming yours, since you're getting the references-- think is fictional, is real. And they're here on Stacy." Wyn says nonchalantly. The things you get used to on the meatship...

"Again, since you're getting the references? Try not to, like, break their brains with the knowledge that they're fictional or that you know what happens in their future. For example, don't tell Anakin Skywalker that he goes crazy and evil and Obi-Wan-- who is here also, by the way-- cuts off his limbs and he turns into a Dark Lord of the Sith. Well, hopefully you wouldn't do that because in that particular case you'd have to be just @#$!ing suicidal, but also because it's a bit rude."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Olivia gave a nod. "That makes sense. I'm not sure what I'd do if I were in that situation. I'll make sure to keep a straight face. I've been told I have a good poker face."

"So 'transdimensional' not only means alternate realities but also completely different worlds. I'll make sure to keep that in mind."

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Wyn shrugs. "I just... avoid mentioning it, if at all possible. I mean, hopefully someone's explained to them about the whole thing, and it's not something that comes up in conversation often." And if she is acting oddly because of the whole thing? It's easy for her to explain away as temporary insanity.

"... and also different planets." she adds belatedly.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course, I didn't intend to mention it at all. I meant that I would act like it was completely normal, since I'm sure there are people who simply can't refrain from acting differently in that situation." She pulled a strand of hair behind her ear, trying to think of how to phrase her next question.

"Is there some universal definition to 'world' and 'realities' here?"

[identity profile] madeofwyn.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting question. "I'd say people are more likely to use 'planets' and 'universes' for the actual physical place they're from and their version of reality respectively. It's slightly less baffling." Wyn says thoughtfully, biting her lip. "... that is what you meant, isn't it?"

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Olivia nodded. "That's exactly what I meant. We referred to other universes as 'realities' or 'dimensions' back home. It's easiest if I go by the norm here, to avoid confusion."
