Like 31st Century Fanfic Really... [open]
A battle raged above a barren world, the odds against the two heroes fighting side-by-side in the thick of it all, but they both refused to give up; there was simply too much at stake for that.
"Keep fighting, we’re winning!" One hero declared. He looked a little like an older version of Kon-El, but with some slightly different facial features and a different costume.
Brainy turned to say something in return, but his eyes focussed instead on the cannon levelled at Superman’s back and primed to fire.
"Look out!" But he could see that the warning wasn’t going to be enough, so threw himself desperately forward, managing to shove Superman clear as the weapon fired and hit him full force, ripping open his side and exposing the circuitry within. As he spiralled out of control and fell to the lifeless rock below, he could only watch as Superman quickly finished off the last of the enemy’s forces and rushed to his side.
"Hold still! You’re going to be fine," Superman insisted, clutching the Coluan boy’s hand tightly. It felt real and warm to Brainy’s sensors, and he gasped weakly, playing up his injuries.
"No Superman, I’m too—" a break for another gasped breath "—it’s too... late for me..."
"Don’t say that! I won’t leave you here!"
"You have to! I can’t go—" GASP. And a weak, pathetic cough. "—You have to save the... universe... Please..."
Superman’s eyes began to tear up. "I’ll never forget your sacrifice, Brainy," he said. "No matter what happens, you’ll always be a hero in my mind."
"Super—" Brainy tried to say, but he coughed again and, with a final sigh, went limp in the hero’s arms as the music swelled to a crescendo and—
Someone was in the room with him. The moment he realised, Brainiac 5 sat up and snapped out an order – "Stacy, end simulation" – mentally cursing that he hadn’t picked up on the intrusion sooner. Trying to act like he hadn’t just been involved in that simulation, he picked himself up off the ground and turned to face the new arrival.
[[if you’re curious, this is all completely canon, so feel free to wander in and comment as you see fit!]]

Re: Really he can! He just doesn't want to.
"Hurt?" She asked. "Jeeze, everyone says that everytime I even mention training with someone else other than Dani!" She complained, annoyance obvious. Really, it was getting on her nerves.
"Well, you're the one whose studying the ecto, right? Let me show you what it can do in combat! Even if I got hurt, I'm not some kid whose not used to fighting."
no subject
"And," he continued, "you're right that I'm studying ecto, but as a power source for the most part. Combat isn't likely to factor into that at all."

Stress on the 'private', less on the 'training'.

The scene around them dissolves into the barren landscape again, completely deserted except for the army of robots advancing on them.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Brainy asked, glancing back at Dani.
no subject
"Besides, I haven't gotten to show anyone what I can do going all out now that I've been fixed."
no subject
He cast a calculating look at their opponents. "Did you want to show me what you're capable of first? Or just see who manages to achieve the better score?"
no subject
She was a great deal stronger than her size gave her credit for.
no subject
He hadn't been expecting that. This might be more of a challenge than he'd thought.
A couple of robots made a grab for him and Brainy stopped boggling at Dani and switched to his battle form, slamming the two together and flying up to deal with others.
no subject
Dani didn't stop with just that though. She started darting around the robots, using her small size to avoid most of the hits before countering with another punch or kick. And when she couldn't evade? She'd phase right through them.
Often coming back out of the robot with a part the made the robot malfunction.

Somewhere along the way he forgot he was technically competing with Dani though, and would sometimes use a burst of speed and a convenient forcefield to guard her back from laser fire, or make a target of himself so she could take out the robots from behind.
It was probably no surprise that between them they made short work of the 'invading forces'.
no subject
And even being competitive, she was fair and whenever she saw a robot getting too close to Brainy when he was dealing with another one, she'd fried off an ecto blast or two to either take out the robot or give him enough time to dispatch it himself.
And it seemed all too quickly, the battle was over.
"Believe me now?" She asked, flying over to Brainy with a wide grin. "That I can fight?"
no subject
That said, he smiled and added, "but I guess you did prove that part wrong."
no subject
Dani beamed. "You're pretty good too. Everything you did, that was so cool! With the lasers and the force fields, it was awesome!"
no subject
"Your own abilities were pretty useful. They remind me of some of the Legion, actually."
no subject
"They do? Who? And what's the Legion?" Dani asked curiously.

Even if the Science Police didn't always see it that way.
no subject
"It does," Dani said and sighed. "Makes me wish it wasn't just Danny and me who were superheroes on our world. Would be a lot easier if there was a group."

She nodded. "Did you get lonely before?" A completely innocent question, really.
no subject
"A little... I suppose," he said carefully. "But that was a long time ago."
