Morning After [Open] [R for Cussing]

Sawyer emerged from the Vatican the day after the Yeerk Battle--he'd been in the basilica, reclining on a pew with a bottle of Jack Daniels, a pack of Camels, and a copy of The Canterbury Tales when everything went down--and surveyed the damage. A few buildings had been riddled with bullets, there was a large pillar--the one that had been hurled at Ms. Marvel--laying shattered on the ground several hundred yards from where it had originated, and another boulder was blocking the entrance to one of the buildings.

"Well, hot damn, when the folks are away...," Sawyer commented, whistling at the wreck that had been wrought upon the City. "When you people throw a party you really throw a party...."

"This was different, we were just trying to stop it. Keep people from being hurt."

She shook her head, "Leon kicks us off of Security, yet we just saw a bunch of grown ups act even stupider and less mature than even the younger kids like Yuri. It makes no sense."

"What the hell you expect?" Sawyer replied, cocking an eyebrow at Kate and giving her a look that suggested he thought she was either blind or just dumb.

"They're tryin' to build their own little empire up here. You really think they gonna want a bunch of kids with the ability to stop 'em gettin' involved?"

"Why because we almost outnumber and outgun them? Maybe it'd be better off with us, at least we have more sense compared with them right now."

"You're the ones doin' all the work to get us off this damn boat, ain't ya?" Sawyer pointed out. "And I didn't see any of them helpin' my ass get the Vatican ready to house all our butts if there's another attack. And this is after you guys had that little run-in with an army of cockroaches and brain-slugs?"

He inhaled, letting the smoke out slowly.

"Ask me, I think someone's sleepin' on the damn job...or, maybe they want some of us to get killed."

"My friend Cassie's on that team, along with some of the other kids. I don't get this, I thought the whole point is that we're all supposed to be working together. Without us it'd be even worse around here."

"Guess that all depends on whose idea of 'worse' you're usin'. Don't it?"

She sank down in the pew slightly, thinking about it.

"Nothing would get done though if they don't want to step up and take action. They can't get rid of all of us, they would have let the Yeerks or the bugs do that if they wanted."

"Yeah, but that was before they crowned themselves a king and started enforcing their rules," Sawyer pointed out. "You think it's a coincidence the only person in the command staff with powers like your guys' got shoved in medical?"

"They got a guy who can fly. And also remember? I don't have powers so that's kind of besides the point."

"Woohoo, a whole two!" Sawyer mocked her argument. "You may not got any powers, but a lot of your friends do. And you don't think it's a little funny that every spandex-wearing, Starfleet jackass got themself a position of authority the minute they set foot on board while you, your friends, and almost every other superpowered person on board got left out in the cold or stuck in places that's almost guaranteed to get ya'll killed...on their orders?"

He paused, taking a long drag.

"Sounds like some people on this boat are more interested in preserving their authority than they are the lives of the people stuck here with 'em. Hell, they tried to level the fuckin' city when someone dared challenge them."

Kate remarked with annoyance, "We had Cybil as leader before that, and everybody voted." Amid a lot of arguing and fighting granted.

"I'm not sure about some of them but I trust Captain Picard. He's a good man." A bit hot tempered at her friend, but that was because she accidentally poked his beserk button. And he did apologize later. Also Kate viewed Picard a bit like she viewed Cap. She doesn't put him on a pedestal but he earned her respect.

"If you say so, sweetheart," he replied, taking one last drag on his cigarette before putting the butt out on the back of the pew in front of them and standing up. "It's your funeral."
