Today, Zuko's slop is EXTRA sloppy.
"No pepper. At all. Really?"
Even the Earth Kingdom had something in the way of condiments.
"This is no way to live."

He doesn't want to ask anything about his mother. Just in case it's either bad news, or because Sokka doesn't know anything -
"We need to try and get deeper in to the lab," he says, as he passes the used equipment.
no subject
They're guys. That's all that needs to be said, right? He paused once or twice to examine a machine that caught his eye as they moved deeper and deeper.
"How are we supposed to do that? Are there doors back here or something?"
no subject
It leads to another part of the Special Weapons Division.

Zuko ducks through the door, igniting a small flame in his palm to light the way.

"This place kinda gives me the creeps..."

One of them is scorched black--the walls, the pod, every part of it is blistered black, yet if they touch it, there's no soot of any kind.
The air is dusty--Stacy doesn't clean here, and most of dust is made of skin flakes anyway, which Stacy has plenty of. The lights are dim, as some of them are burned out.
There's also a larger enclave that's very similar to MedBay, and quite large, with medical equipment. There's something that looks like an operating table there, with mechanical arms--surgical equipment of some kind.
And restraints.
Hanging from a hook there is some kind of harness, metal segments, shaped like a human spine, with needles all along it, like it was meant to be cybernetically affixed to someone's back.
There are also desks there, with something on one of them: datapads, like in the Media Library, covered in green-gray dust, left untouched by the group that discovered this room.
no subject
"Just keep an eye out for anything that could have been Aang's. Or anything he could have touched."
He inspects the blistered, blackened pod.

What Sokka finds isn't promising: the devices in the Med Center don't seem to be quite like the equipment in the MedBay, meant for healing. They're of a more probing, invasive nature.

"I don't know what caused this fire."
no subject
"No idea. Firebenders? Maybe Aang..." He frowned.
"Judging by the looks of that table in there, Aang would not have liked this place..."

"Look for something you can read. Or with pictures."

Zuko was the expert Aang-hunter, so Sokka did as he was asked, starting to go through another desk next to the one Zuko was busy with.

The writing is translated courtesy of the ship, too, although some of the words and symbols remain untranslated and the files are corrupted, so chunks of data are missing.

76279.5-Project Chrysalis is a rare find and it's doubtful we would have even discovered what we had if the surveyors hadn't stumbled on some unusual readings during their scheduled vital monitoring. Subject was originally classified as a low-level psionically sustained telepathic being, but strange spikes and jumps in psionic energy from the subject caught the eye one of the surveyors and they brought it to me.
Subject appears not only to just be sustained and kept alive by psionic energy, but it seems as if what remains of his body is limiting how much energy can be accumulated and released.
Due to the nature of Project: Silence, and subject's psionic absorption abilities, it would not be wise to transfer subject to Special Weapons Division just yet.
However, once subject is transferred, ideally we should be able to cut away and destroy the rest of his body and help him reach his full potential. If that can be done successfully, this subject and the subject of Project: Silence should be enough to end this war.
It is as if we have been given a gift in lieu of the failure of Project: Descent.
What a lucky find!
There are other files. That's just the one on top.

Here are the recovered files from Project: Silence, and exactly why we should abandon our plans with the the Kdathian Sone.
We cannot let this happen again.

Powers: Capable of, and we haven't figured out which is true, either spreading her nightmarish consciousness over a given area or sucking sentients into it. 77245.3- Subject has been moved into habitat room 2. Subject of Project: Descent has been kept in habitat 1. Once Project: Silence has been stabilized, it might appreciate a playmate, and it may help it to remain stable.
Subject appears to have suffered injury and abuse and according to her history. Wounds will not respond to medical treatment, yet patient remains alive.
Psionic shielding has been put up around habitat two and S.W.D as a whole. We will keep them operational as the dampeners are removed, just as a precaution.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Something went wrong. Shields not enough. Readings indicated two entities instead of one. Child's body inhabited by nothing like we've ever seen. Communication with the entity was futile.
Darkness everywhere. We've lost contact with the rest of the ship. Human life fluids on the walls, everything rotting. Half of my staff is dead.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Five more dead today. We destroyed the bodies lest they become like the monstrous beings that attacked us.
Apparation of [Error {"unholychild"}] appeared. She was afraid of us. The child and the entity appear to be connected, but separate It appears that the child was forced to carry psionic parasite against her will.

I am alone. They're all dead. We attempted to rescue subject in habitat 1. Partly to spare the child.

Way to understate, Zuko.
It occurs to him, briefly, that if things like . . . like this are in the Special Weapons department, under lock and key, then there's a danger that instead of freeing Aang, he might unleash this - or something worse - in the Avatar's place -
No. He has a task, and he will complete it.
"We'll have to be careful not to let it out."

Sokka rifles through the other datapads again, searching for more information. He glances over his shoulder at Zuko.
"You know, the more I find out about this place, the less and less I like it."

94435.9-The following file has been recovered in the wake of Project: Silence's meltdown. I have decided to record it for reference, before continuing the file on Project: Descent. I must learn from the mistakes of my predecessor.
Here are the notes:
---------------
74161.8- Have woken subject from podsleep. Subject responded violently, delving into what appears to be a spiritually-powered defense mechanism. Subject had to be sedated. Subject was woken once again and I explained the situation as best as possible, but it appeared it was going back into its defense mechanism and it had to be sedated once more.
Exploratory surgery performed--physiology verified as generic humanoid type 2. Full testing.
Spiritual abilities and psychokinesis still unexplained--no enlargement in frontal lobes indicated, although subject's neuronal structure is not one of the common types, and neural network is rather dense. Also, subject has higher ratio of neuronal cells to glial cells.
Hopefully subject will be more cooperative tomorrow. Wish I could dislose more info to subject to gain compliance but slunts at I.C. are only allowing so much information to be released.
Just what I need--another spiritual case.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
74197.4-Subject remains uncompliant, but even during security incidents, does not take advantage of opening to cause harm to staff. Field exercises in the immersion room have show subject to be a capable fighter, using several forms of matial combat native to its world. The immersion room had to be modified to simulate the atomic structure of common elements of planetary terrain. Source of subject's control over terrain still not identified.
Subject is demonstrating vast weapons potential.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Special Weapons Staff has been ordered to disregard ethics protocols to get results from subjects. Not sure--
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Several staff members have been dropped from this project, as they are unwilling to perform duties that would have violated the ethics protocols were they still in place, especially regarding the newly constructed harness. Harness would allow us to control subject's movements in worst-case scenario to prevent subject from harming--

[ERRORERRORERROR]
74279.5-Have not achieved proper results. Subject is completely noncompliant, and quite frankly I cannot blame him.
A simple release of information from I.C. would have allowed us to coerce subject into voluntary cooperation, as subject is good-natured enough and prescribes to a high moral code, but of course they ignored my professional input.
Subject is being put back into stasis so that SWS can focus on other potentials, though I must add as a personal note that this would be much easier if I.C. would allow us to release more information and if Command left ethics protocols in place.
These are sentient beings and most of them would be highly cooperative if treated with respect and provided valid information.
I am filing a complaint with Command. I simply cannot run a lab like this.

The events of the meltdown of Project: Silence and surrounding incidents were highly traumatic to the subject. This has made it quite fortunate that we were granted permission for memory erasure. Memory erasure was successfully completed, though to prevent partial recall, we had to make alterations and erasures even further back in the subject's timeline than their abduction point.
We are giving Project: Descent time to recover, as the process was rather extensive. I will update my records as soon as he awakens.
94445.7-Promising news! Project Descent regained consciousness. Unfortunately, he reacted rather violently to his situation, dropping reflexively into his spiritual defense mechanism, but we managed to lightly sedate him, calm him down, and explain his situation. In my first step towards learning from my predecessor's mistakes: an explanation of our situation has engendered caution but some cooperativeness. Hopefully, we'll be able to gain the subject's trust to help us in our efforts. For now, we are attempting to make the adjustment period as painless as possible.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
94467.2- Project: Descent is slowly adjusting to life on board the ship, and I.C. has given us permission to progress in our plans. Subject was resistant to our attempts to stimulate his spiritual defense mechanism.
Related note: I need to replace my desk.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
It's been weeks now and the subject still refuses to cooperate with us in stimulating his defense mechanism. We have opted not to make any attempts by force, as future cooperation with the subject will be necessary. Subject claims mechanism is dangerous and that it must undergo some sort of spiritual process to learn to control it.
Why couldn't it have just been a metahuman? These spiritual cases are always a nightmare. Useless, unless we're willing to go three times widdershins around in a circle during the three full moons to help them unlock their powers.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Success, at last! Subject was coerced with information about the Ohm threat and positive reinforcement in the form of the medical crew showing it where its world-mates were in stasis. (NOTE: Subject seems especially fixated on the well-being of Podmate #3V45€6572A "Katara" -- possible leverage in the future?).
Full cooperation seems possible at last. (SECONDARY NOTE: Subject also appears to have developed a fondness for iced cream. Possible use as an reward for good behavior?)
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
95534.8- Defense mechanism was finally triggered today, but at great cost. The harness overtaxed the subject's sensory threshold until desired mechanism was stimulated, but we lacked any ability at all the control the reaction, just as my predecessor noted when he managed the same. The subject reacted violently and destroyed a considerable part of the lab, before collapsing from exhaustion. Luckily, there were no casualties. We're relocating to the Medbay proper for now, in one of the rear sectors. Not looking forward to working under Plittik--I know he'll demand a second copy of my notes in his own notation system. Fnarking protocol.
Iced cream has been obtained. Hopefully, the subject will accept our peace offering and not use this as a reason to cease cooperation.
[Errorerror FILE CORRUPTION]
Subject is still very angry with us but coming around. We allowed it another visit to its worldmates in the Pod Caverns. He spent considerable time around Podmate #3V45€6572A, simply sitting in the Pod Caverns with his back to her pod, talking to the female, rather futilely, but subject ignored us when we told him that it was impossible for the female to hear him . When subject was escorted back to MedBay, he spoke to the SWS team and insisted on no uncertain terms that we were to no longer make attempts with the harness or to activate his defense mechanism unnaturally.
Must speak to I.C. Subject's recommendation is being taken under advisement. Risk is too great to not proceed with greater caution.
Also am v. tired of having to replace my desk.
And that's all there is.
