Of all things, Ian hadn't been expected to be bested by a tree. That it was a tree that moved without the wind should have given him a clue, but, well, it was a tree. He'd got too close, it got a good hit in, he'd landed awkwardly and now he couldn't walk.

It was only his ankle and, feeling embarrassed about the whole thing, he'd intended to just hobble home. Except that it did really hurt. So halfway there he found the nearest teleport and ended up in the medbay.

"Especially with this war on, people could use something fun like football. You could use the Sensoriums, or some other space that has enough room like...like somewhere in the city. There might be more of an audience there." Barbara was possibly getting more excited about the idea than Ian was. Possibly.

He nodded. He wasn't so much excited about the idea as contemplative. "The Sensoriums would be too ordinary. But I wonder how many of the people here have five-a-side or something equivalent to football anyway."

"You can always put the call out and see, and I'm sure that teaching a few people wouldn't be too hard?" Though she supposed it would come down to his definition of 'a few'.

"Football's not that difficult, all you have to do is kick the ball. I'm sure I could teach a few people," he said confidently.

"I'm certain that you're more than capable," she replied. "Is there anything you need while you're here? I can bring you a book? Food blocks? One of your rescued damsels?"

Barbara grinned at that, although the very idea of Ian and another woman, she had started to realise, turned her a slight shade of green.

Ian grinned. "One rescued damsel at my bedside is probably enough."

"Probably," Barbara agreed, running her thumb over the back of his hand. "But is there anything I can actually bring you?"

He shook his head. "Unless you can magically fix my ankle." He didn't move his hand in case she stopped doing that.

She chuckled, "while I might be a damsel, I'm unfortunately not a magical one, so there'll be no miraculous healing today. Not from me, at least."

"Is it hurting?" Barbara asked after a moment and turned around slightly to better inspect his foot for herself. Not that she didn't trust any of the medical staff on board but she was curious, and wanted an analysis for herself.

"Not any more, it's just gone numb from the cold." He stared at it himself, but didn't move it.

When he turned back to her he looked at her intently. "You weren't injured in the recent fighting?"

"I haven't been fighting, so I'm quite fine," replied Barbara truthfully. "Just helping out wherever I'm useful."

He nodded. "That's good. I hope things will be a little easier now the Daligig are gone."

"I've no doubt that they will. All we need to do now is get our homes back from the Ohm, and end this other war." Although that didn't feel particularly easy to accomplish, either, but theyjad kicked off the Daligig, so who knew what else they could do.

"I wish I knew how to do that." He frowned. "Perhaps something will present itself."

"I'm sure that it will. For now, however, you need to get better. You'll be no use to anyone if your ankle doesn't mend." Not entirely true but close enough.

"It's not that bad," he said, forgetting about wanting it to seem like a worthwhile injury. "And I'm sure there are plenty of useful things I can do sitting down."

"You'll be more useful when you can walk properly," she replied, dropping his hand.

"I'll be better once the swelling's gone down." He rested his hands in his lap. "But there are still things I can do that don't involve my ankle," he insisted. "I think we should do something about the children on Stacy."

"What do you mean?" she asked, suddenly curious. "You're not going to try and re-pod them all, are you?"

He shook his head. It was impractical, as much as he liked the idea. "Just to make sure they're all all right and are getting everything they need, whatever it is. Living in a war's not easy."

"No, it isn't," she agreed, remembering briefly what it was like for her as a young girl. "What did you have in mind, then?"

"It depends on who we have and what they need. Maybe an adult they can go to, some semblance of a normal life we can give them or training to help them survive whatever else might get thrown at us." He became more animated as he spoke, it being something he was keen on. "I spoke to Tim Drake about it, someone like him who's still young himself would be a good person for other teenagers to go to if they need help."

It was rather a good idea in Barbara's eyes. Actually, it was a fantastic idea - maybe if Howard had kept busy he wouldn't have left them so quickly. But it was best not to dwell on that now.

"I like that. We could find safe places for them to go to if someone ever attacked Stacey - like an emergency evacuation procedure. And we could have structured activities or something. We could base it on a week - 5 days of something, each day different, two days of rest and then start all over again." Barbara too was thrilled by the idea, and her eyes lit up as ideas began to flow. How many of them were actually useful was something else entirely.

"Not like school, although perhaps some lessons might not be too bad, but we could focus primarily on character and moral development, skill building exercises, even counseling type times; somewhere where they can just talk about whatever is on their mind, which would have to be healthier than bottling it all up. I'm sure that having someone like Mr. Drake would be a good idea for that," not that Barbara felt terribly old but young people did often work better with people closer to their own age. "If we could get a small team of us to run things, we might have a range of things for them to do."

Ian nodded, although given the disruption that tended to happen on Stacy he wasn't sure that five days of work and two days off would work so well. But there was nothing to stop them trying it.

"It all depends on who we can get to help. Tim suggested Dick Grayson, who's a friend of his, I think. I'm not sure who else might be willing." It was hard to tell when he hadn't seen people in that setting. "Although the department heads might be willing to help take on apprentices or give a few lessons."

"Well, we could always start and see who's interested in helping? Plus Tim might know a few more." At least they had a start, she supposed. "Whatever the case, I'll help in anyway I can."
